ーJR Passー
Since JR has adjusted the prices for the pass, not really worth it anymore, unless you want to travel by train very extensively. You can plug in your itinerary in the links below and compare prices to the JR Pass.

Going this summer, two weeks. Starting off with Tokyo for five nights, then traveling by bullet train to Kansai to soak up some culture in Kyoto and enjoy some gourmet street food in Osaka, then back to Tokyo for a few days before flying out. What are some must-do things for the itinerary? I would like to go to more interesting and local places, preferably no tourists. Traveling solo, and I'm a very experienced traveler.

How are you guys deciding on what to do? Watching youtube videos?
I was last summer in tokyo, kawaguchiko (it was a fucking adventure to get there by bus for 2 days, didnt even had a hotel and booked within the bus) and osaka and pretty much did most of my bucket list
I want to go again this month again and collecting things to do but only very niche things or certain foodspots I can find on japan vloggers videos since I did all the major things

If you're looking for a city recommendation, why not see if you've got a sister city in Japan? If you show up at the city hall and say hi, they'll probably be blindsided that you came all the way out. You should get good restaurant/tourism advice, and they might even invite you out to after work beer if they really like you.

my main passion is for inaka, so every year it's just a matter of choosing a new prefecture, looking for rural out-of-the-way spots within 90 minutes walk of a train connection, and finding an affordable place to stay, then going exploring, often finding events while out and about
having a hobby or interest makes things straightforward basically

Kyoto has no culture. It's all tourists.

And I've seen white people point to a group of the brownest, loudest, fattest filipinos imaginable and call them Japanese. Yes, even the "locals" you'll see are foreign tourists.

And Osaka doesn't really have a street food culture. Japan doesn't have a street food culture. You're thinking of Taiwan or Thailand. Osaka basically has a couple takoyaki places. But it's less "street food" in the conventional sense (some shack along the road) and just straight up fast food.

No one had a problem that I was american, and they still love american culture (snoopy, disney, dad rock and americana are beloved.) Also saw a jap in a MAGA hat. Considering Nippon Steel is partnering with USS they don't hate us in a business sense either, and the tariffs are all bark no bite, trump will fold. Probably the only area that hates americans is okinawa.

Receives polite service and complains.
>they'll rush through the important part of what they're saying
It isn't their job to speak slowly like they're talking to a child when they're talking to a grown adult that thought they'd be catered to in a foreign country.
>people are animals in stations all shoving each other in battle royale, the young men hog the seats leaving elderly to stand
Don't use public transport during rush hours, you shouldn't have any problems outside of that. Next time do actual research. The elderly are to blame for the country's problems. No sympathy.
>tourists dragging insanely oversized luggage everywhere, even dragging their luggage into crowded attractions because they're too cheap to pay for a coin locker.
You wouldn't have to deal with this if you avoided big tourist locations devoid of the soul of Japan. This is your own fault.
>every toilet has a "do not stand on the seat" sticker SOLELY because of the chinese
Offended by a sign, I assume you're an American.
>the no trashcan thing is annoying
Bring a small backpack that acts as a garbage bag until you get back to your accommodations. Simple fix.
>signs everywhere saying not to litter
Given how dirty America and China are and considering they're the bulk of the tourists. The sign makes sense.
>blowdryers
God forbid people are clean
>treated like a criminal and/or retard automatically because i'm white
Definitely an American. Typical white persecution complex. You ARE a retard. everything you complained about was your own fault, not Japans
>kyoto's transit system is ass
Do better research
>stations are liminal space hellscapes, inconveniently large, mostly empty

Are you familiar with the legendary Japanese manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge, who has been described in English-speaking countries as "the Godard of the Japanese manga world"?
Why not visit the places where his works were set or inspired?
These are not famous tourist destinations, but they will give you a taste of what it is like to live in the countryside.

"Nejishiki":
Futomi, Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture
The beach where the main character boy comes up and the alley where the train appears are exactly as described in the manga.
The narrow and intricate alleys and houses that fill the lot, typical of a Japanese fishing town.
Nearby is Niemon Island, a privately owned island that can be accessed by paying a boat fare.

"Red Flowers":
Otaki Town, Isumi County, Chiba Prefecture
Once a castle town, now deserted.
Tsuge often visited the now demolished an ryokan in this town to plan his works.
A beautiful girl who often appears in his works was modeled after the daughter of a relative of the ryokankeeper.
Many of his works other than "Red Flowers" were also inspired by this town.
The Oya Ryokan, which he described as "the ideal merchant's ryokan," is still in business as it was in those days.

"The ryokan at Chōhachi":
Matsuzaki Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture
The ryokan described in the manga is still in business as it was in those days.

"Futamata Valley":
Amae Village, Iwase County, Fukushima Prefecture
It is a hidden hot spring deep in the mountains. The ryokan in "The Withered Inn" was also modeled on this place, and the son of the ryokan is still in existence.

Planning my second trip and wanted to fly into Tokyo then go up to Kanazawa then to Osaka. How many days is it worth staying in Kanazawa, and where is a good part of the city to stay to walk around to bars. I was planning 3 nights there, but info online seems conflicted how long is too much or how tourist friendly the nightlife is (mostly for small bars/izakaya)

Both Fukuoka and Kobe are really nice cities. Fukuoka is fairly hip (though it’s of course third place after Tokyo/Osaka) and everyone is really friendly. Kobe is a very fashionable city and +points for being close to Osaka and Kyoto, as well as three airports incl. two international; UKB, ITM, and KIX

I'm planning a 2 week trip for December this year with a couple friends. Looking to head to Okinawa for a couple days not long after we land.

We're getting a rental car for the trip. Is there a way to take the car with us to Okinawa on a ferry? I'm kinda retarded and can't really find info on ferries that accept cars as well as people. Ideally we just want to have the one car the whole trip, not have to rent multiple cars.

It is insane to take a rental car to Okinawa by ferry. Is there a serious reason why you cannot take the usual route of flying to Okinawa and renting a car there?

Chiba Prefecture has other places related to Yoshiharu Tsuge in addition to those listed above.

"Scenery by the Sea":
Ohara, Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture
Ohara Fishing Port, a small beach adjacent to Ohara Fishing Port, and Cape Hachiman overlooking the beach.

"Master of the Yanagiya":
Nagaura, Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture
The station has been renovated. The east side of the station, which used to be a cliff, has been turned into a new town, and the west side of the station, where the sea used to be close to the tracks, has been reclaimed and turned into an industrial area.
The only thing that reminds us of those days is the building of Yorozuya Shokudo, which became the model for Yanagiya.

"The Commoners' Inn":
The location cannot be identified, but Chikura, Kamogawa, and other places in the southern tip of Chiba are mentioned.

Yoro Valley, Otaki Town, Isumi County, Chiba Prefecture:
Not a manga, but a onsen village with black spring in his travel essay.
He and his family visited the "Kawanoya", which was isolated from the other onsen inns.

I'm planning on studying at a school in Fukuoka starting in October. see you there if you go. I'm nervous but excited to take some time off of work and immerse in the language. I'm studying like a mad-man these next 4 months to try and at least get past the beginner stages of the language

side note is that even though I'm a white, non-fat average gaijin, I can't help but feel like I'm intruding on everyone based on my last trip to Tokyo/Kyoto. the look and feeling I got walking into certain places or on transit was definitely a tad unsettling but I totally get their point of view. I unironically believed before that experience that whites were "ok" but other races were not. probably an ignorant belief on my part

When I do my yearly solo trip to Japan I rarely see sunlite because I prefer to keep my sleep cycle and just explore the night. It's quite amazing because it is empty, no tourists, nothing. Good food places often are opened until early morning, clubs and bars too. And nice climate. If I wanna go around I take a taxi or rental scooter.

When I'm on the scooter I often get passed by groups of these bosozoku. I know many think they are annoying but imo they look damn cool. Interesting bike mods as well. I also see them hanging around parking lots etc. Anyone ever talked to them? A Japanese friend told me not to because they are dangerous and criminal. I'm really curious and would love to know them more, talk, hang out a bit. Should I try next time or better avoid? I also don't wanna end up beaten up by a group of thugs in the middle of night

You’re asking about two different things. Driving in Japan is maybe a little more difficult than say, the US because there’s lot of narrow roads, but otherwise the core is the same. Learning to drive emphasizes stuff you have to do on the autistic driving exam but also still teaches you how to drive, like anywhere else on Earth.

I will park it in my imaginary house in Tokyo. I want to be able to imagine night cruising the wangan in it. Maybe imagine going to the track a bit as well, or drifting?

If you are planning to travel as a couple, it is also a good idea to use love hotels.
In general, you can stay at a love hotel in the countryside without a reservation, and the room rate is about 5,000 yen for a couple, which is less expensive than staying at a capsule hotel for two people.
However, these hotels are located in places where public transportation such as trains and buses are not available, so you will have to travel by rental car.

I'm going to Japan in October-November for about three weeks. I've been to Japan two times before for around 3 weeks each time and seen a lot of the notable things in central Japan. So I was thinking of going to Kyushu this time around. Other than Yakushima, Beppu and Fukuoka, Kyushu is a bit of blind spot for me. Are there any other places in or around Kyushu actually worth visiting? I might go to some other area (Hokkaido possibly) if I can't fit a full 3 weeks in only Kyushu.

I only book the first couple of nights of the trip in advance so I have somewhere to go from the airport. The rest of my trip I only book 2 or 3 days out. I like being able to adjust my itinerary on the fly based on how I feel about the places I visit.

The only time it backfired was in Nagasaki, there must have been some school sports event or something because there were fuck all options to book and the overly expensive hotel I was forced into was full of giggling teenagers.

It can be a bit spooky checking out at 10am with nothing planned then sitting in a cafe/park with all your stuff finding somewhere to stay but it's usually works out fine.

You can also stay overnight and they’re actually not that expensive, often less than 15,000 JPY a night. They’re really underrated as accommodation options. As a counterpoint to other anons, though, you can sometimes get away with booking last minute, but if you’re looking at popular destinations during peak seasons or (Japanese) holiday periods, your options will be a lot more limited and prices will be real jacked up.

If you are me knowing all of Tokyo already and tired of city buzz I would probably find something in rural Chiba close to a beach. After work learning to surf, do some fishing. Other than that.. Tokyo of course. Or even better (my opinion): Osaka, because then you can do day trips to Nara and Kyoto. When I was a student I stayed in those dormitories. Very cheap but shared bathroom and kitchen. I was the only European, everyone else Chinese. They wore noisy and a bit not so clean but always invited me for dinner and drinks.

And yes you can take trains to ski resorts. For example Niigata which isn't all too far from Tokyo. Great snow, not very crowded (on weekdays).

My last trip I used exclusively booking.com. I'm too much of a sperg to just walk in and ask.
Obviously if you are there during super busy periods like Golden Week you would need to plan ahead; I plan my trips specifically to avoid peak times.

Also I never stayed in prime areas like Shinjuku/Shibuya/Kyoto etc. The more popular an area the less likely you'll get good deals at the last minute.

Still a fair way's off but I'm plotting out ideas for the fall since I already have my flights in and out booked. Flying into Korea was surprisingly really cheap and I've never been there before, so my thoughts are a week or so in Seoul then fly down for 2 weeks around Kyushu. Been to Japan 3 times previously but haven't gone west of Hiroshima/Shikoku.

Going to a sumo basho is a major bucket-list thing I've wanted to do for years, I'd potentially be willing to go on multiple days if my schedule allows for it. Also some areas I'm looking to get some day hiking in - Yakushima is a definite commitment, I would really like to hike the Kirishima volcanoes as well but it seems like it's had a sizeable exclusion zone for a while now and might be risky to plan around, so my inclination is to try Aho instead.

Are Kagoshima and/or Kumamoto worth dedicating a day to? I've been to a bunch of the original castles so I'm not sure that Kumamoto Castle is a big draw for me, and I don't know a whole lot about what there is in Kagoshima other than the volcano.

Any must-do things on the Eastern end of Kyushu? I greatly prefer small secluded types of onsen towns so I'm skeptical about Beppu (thinking I might daytrip or overnight at Kurokawa). The rest of the east coast seems rather sparse but of course I could be overlooking something significant.

Must-see spots within daytrip range of Fukuoka? I'm primarily interested in the Basho for the city itself, It would be nice to have a day or two in Tokyo before leaving but I'm open to trimming it out if there are worthwhile things to do in the region on those spare days. I know Daizufu is a popular option but don't really know much else about other potential spots that are reasonably easy to access by train.

Any resources for figuring out car rentals? I've never had to sort out renting a car in Japan before but it seems sort of necessary. How big an issue is it getting used to driving left etc?

I've had a Wise card for a few years that I use as a vacation fund, the rates tend to be decent and swapping currencies is very straightforward. And then when you use it while travelling it'll deduct from the converted currency at direct value rather than whatever exchange rate the merchant has happened to set the machine at. Also works perfectly well at ATMs, though I always exchange a few 10ks at a local spot that has good rates before I leave to get started.

i dabble in finance and the japanese yen is currently quite weak, but the political/economic policies of the Trump admin/Global affairs is causing the USD to go down and the JPY (and other currencies) to go up.

if you go and take out money right now, i think you'll get a great exchange rate(at least compared to the last 30 years) and if you go to japan and take out currency you PROBABLY wont be so far off the current rates(up or down).

my suggestion is take out 33%-50% of the cash you want to bring right now, and the rest when you get there.

Stupid question. I've seen in vids that stores with multiple floors have a check out on each floor. Am I supposed to pay on each one or the bottom when I leave?

Yes.
Yes.
Dunno.

They got guards at the entrance checking everyone, you could skip those if you're suicidal. There's enough space between the toll booth and the guards to slip off the trail, but the slopes are steep and it's all loose volcanic shit, but at least you still have some vegetation at that level to hide you. Then you've got guards patrolling trails up&down and making sure you've got a band visible (colour changes each day). Trying to bypass the trail all the way up sounds miserable and you'd stick out in the open like a sore thumb.

Can you pay the entrance fee on the day at the station?
Is it only patrolled from 5th station and upwards on each route?
I'll be doing the Fujinomiya route, not the Yoshida trail if that means anything.

Yes. I think Yoshida has a daily limit, so pre-registered people get priority and then the remaining entry pool is first come first serve, but Fujinomiya should be unlimited.
Yes, no one cares about what happens below the gate on 5th station.

if it's an actual checkout and not just an info desk, you generally pay on whatever floor you got that item
it's also just safer to try on your current floor and be politely redirected instead of carrying items from floor to floor without purchasing

Usually yes, but regardless most places will have signage up in clear english that asks you to pay floor 1 items at floor 1 etc.
Longer answer: depends on the store setup really. In some cases there's an escalator or stairway that connects 2 or more independent stores that reside on different floors, you'd have to pay on the floor you got the item.
Sometimes there is a second hand floor that has separete inventory from the unused goods floor, sometimes it is set up as payment on each floor for convenience, sometimes for categories of goods (adult, alcohol, electronics etc) and sometimes there will be a multi floor building that has just one store operating the whole tower and they will accept payment for whatever where ever

unless you are some kind of train autist who will be spending 90% of his time riding trains, no.
just get a suica and use it where applicable. you will need to buy shinkansen tickets between major areas and they can be expensive but are still much cheaper than the rail pass. you can also take express busses which are a cheaper option but they also take a lot longer.

I just looked it up on navitime and your trip of tokyo > osaka, osaka > fukuoka, fukuoka > tokyo costs 220 euros.
you would have to do travel back to osaka again just to break even. that, or use it extensively to travel around each city.
I'm going from chiba to travel around fuji, shizuoka, and kyoto tomorrow and I calculated my travel costs and they are still less than the rail pass.
but hey, you do you.

Id say look into festivals in areas or towns you haven'g been too yet, like Niigata, Sendai, Hakata, and Yamagata to name a few.

Some festivals I heard good things about
>Niigata has an international snowball fight planned in early Feb
>Sendai's Tanabata Fesitval from Aug 6th-8th
>Hakata's Gion Yamakasa between July 1st to 15th
>Yamagata's Nanyo Chrysanthemum Festival in Early Oct to Early Nov

Another tip. Have themes for each day of your trip to avoid exhaustion. So like you could have a food day, then the following day is about a specific nature site, etc.

the best advice I read on here is book whatever price you're comfortable at, then don't check the flight prices after.
personally, I watched the flight prices for a couple of months before booking and ended up settling at $1400 CAD return. I could have probably done it for $1200, but I didn't want to risk getting forced into paying $2000 or something ridiculous.

Check out Kyushu. Fukuoka is dope, kinda the last hub of street food in Japan. Look into the Yatai (food cart) culture

Kagoshima has an active volcano, Nagasaki has a peace park, Kumamoto castle is very nice.

Fukuoka is also the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen and has a lot of og ramen restaurants

Oita and beppu have open air hot springs, obviously many temples and shrines throughout Kyushu. You could probably easily spend 2 weeks in Kyushu.

Fukuoka is also close to Hiroshima where you can see the peace park, Mazda museum, and miyajima island. Hiroshima is also famous for its Okonomoyaki.

i am not sure but I think it was airhub where I got mine from and installed as e sim before flying. I got instantly internet when I arrived BUT these subhuman piece of shit scammers cut off my data 2 days before my return. and no I still had a week and I still had bunch of data left. and the problem is I flew back from Osaka and the lines didnt match what google maps told me like in Tokyo where you can trust it blindly and I almost missed my flight. arrived 30 minutes before takeoff. thank god there were no lines anywhere and I reached the flight in 15 minutes. al because I didnt know what train to take and I had no internet. oh and I could not pay with my card or suika because I had no internet and had to find a conv store and had to draw 10.000 again so I could pay 2k ticket fee

Looking for drugs that are over the counter in Japan and not widely available in the US. From what I've seen the only thing really is maybe accutane. Looking for other drugs to pick up and bring back. PS. I fully understand that Japan is more strict than the US for drugs so I don't need a whole thing about that. Just what drugs are easily available in Japan to bring back to the US

I just booked my tickets to the Ghilbi museum on a day I'm not in the country.
I managed to book AGAIN using a different email address, this time for the correct day, but now I just have this ticket I can't use.
I don't want a refund or anything. I just want to tell them I don't want it so someone else can have it but there is no way to cancel for some reason. Is there?
I'm in the UK so I need to sleep but I hope when I check back someone can tell me because I see no way to cancel.

Ok, I really need advice. So my trip is in August (20th to the 31st). However, my focus is my hike on Mt. Fuji which I got the hut reserved on the 27th and I can't really move around that. Should I just stay in the Five Fuji Lake area for a few days or should I just hike up that mountain, go to an onsen and head back to Shinjuku? It just looks like while there's enough to do, booking a hotel is a lot more expensive in this area (at least in Kawaguchiko) and there really doesn't seem to be that many restaurants either

Then i was in the imperial garden in the midday and sat there for 2 minutes and realised i was bited, in the fucking middle of the day.
I almost got a panic attack remembering that sign and looking up what japanese mosquitos could carry illnesses. Got bitten 2 more times but in the end nothing happened.

No, kyushu is dope. Lots to do. Kagoshima has a volcano you can hike, oitaand bepu are onsen towns and you can go for a hike to see monkeys. You can visit the peace park in Nagasaki and eat street food in Fukuoka. 7 days should be enough to cover everything. It’s gonna be very hot however, also June-September is lowkey a rainy season. Carry an umbrella and drink lots of water Nigga.

I would probably do 2 nights kagoshima, 1-2 nights in oita/beppu and 3-4 nights in Fukuoka with a day trip to Nagasaki. Have fun

It can be pretty random. Like sunny beautiful day to insane rainstorm in 2 minutes. I just keep a tiny day bag with an umbrella and/or rain jacket in it. They sell mini umbrellas at combinis that are pretty compact but the quality is sus if it’s really windy out

How the fuck is Zipair offering such cheap flights from Cali?
If I want a standard seat, with a meal, carry on and checked luggage it's like ~$880 for round trip to Tokyo with no stops. It costs almost double to fly to Brazil or Europe. WTF

what the fuck bros
I thought I could get away with 2-2,5k at max
I calculated
600 flight +300 rail pass +600 hostel+500 food +70 metro tickets for 20 nights
just checked out hostel prices and even capsules starting 35 euros so I have to calculate 700-800 for stay. thats 2,2k and no souvenirs included yet and I had to live like a rat
why are stays so expensive? even manga cafes cost that much.
what can I cheap out on make the trip not cost 3k?
>railpass
yeah but I want to city hoppinghis time. a city a day in Kyushu

So if you go to japan for 90 days then take a flight to korea, then go back to japan and ask for another 90 days they'll let you in no problem? Only reason I ask this is because an actual visa office told me this. Some japanese travelers said it should be no problem too but I find it hard to believe.

early/mid fall is the bad time for mosquitos because that's when the ones with the bad diseases are most active. only in certain areas of japan tho, like along the north coast iirc

most japanese people (and probably 1st worlders in general) are inoculated against the diseases they carry but if you're from a country that doesn't have a robust health policy they can be a big problem

I go to Naha for a week or so every year, and this is bullshit. I couldn't care less about the Seamonkeys, but the zogbots generally keep to their containment zones near the bases. If you're surrounded by them in Naha, you're going to the wrong places. I'm shocked.

Yes it's the same thing for resetting your visa as visiting Thailand. Just make sure you have a good passport from a (mostly) white country.

The question is how many times in a row you plan on repeating this. If it's just once then no one care. Source: trust me bro, I did this in Thailand in 2018 and it just makes sense.

Also don't leave for like 24 hours before coming back. Go take a trip for 1 week before returning and you'll be fine. Again I am AMERICAN (insert joke here) so if you are not white then you might have a harder time.

checked I only want to do it once so I can stay for five months I probably will just take a real week long vacation maybe hong kong or something too expensive to live. I always worry about just screwing up the conversation at the airport. They always give me a hard time asking about supporting myself for 3 months without working. As if no one has savings.

I'm sorry to hear you are getting the NEET treatment. Whenever I fly the worst I get is the classic "business of tourism" question. I'm in and out in under 5 minutes. I guess I should be more aware of my privilege.

My only advice is keepijng in mind that the most they are trying to do is rattle you. They don't actually know your finances or how much you have in your bank account. They are looking for a reason to deny so don't give them one.
Neutral autistic face. Polite, but short answers.
>Do you have a return ticket?
Yes sir.
>Do you have finances for a 3 months stay?
Yes sir.

DONEZO.
Remember that you are white (maybe) and are not breaking any laws (probably) so the pigs have nothing on you. Just be cool and smile. Practice before a mirror if you have to.

What is your preferred resource for researching, finding and booking hotels in Japan?
I've noticed booking, com is consistently the cheapest with the majority of hotels but cheaper ones exist through airline offers and special deals.
Do you chase a few dollars booking all over the internet or choose to benefit from having everything accessible on the same site?

i will be working there in few weeks
from what i have heard or saw, it seems extremely overpriced and more business-oriented
the expositions also look a bit underwhelming compared to museums about specific topics, but if you dig the classic shallow cultural baseding, then douzo
the thing i heard people liked there the most were concerts and other live artistic shows
there are also some drone shows and fireworks and overall the whole area is said to look really good at night

Use Skyscanner for cheap flights, it scans literally every website for deals. Check zip-airs website too, I have seen tickets at $700 round trip YVR-NRT. I ended paying around $900 for my trip in march.

They haven’t released their flight schedule for the winter yet, last I checked it ends somewhere in November. Apparently it comes out in July-August according to Reddit. I would just keep checking weekly. Otherwise air Canada and west jets cheapest flights seem to be around $1200
