Yeah sure, it's never Boeing...
In the last ten years only:
>Feb 13, 2018: United Airlines Flight 1175, 777 suffered in-flight engine fan blade separation over the Pacific, no injuries
>Oct 29, 2018 Lion Air Flight 610, 737crashed into Java Sea due to MCAS malfunction; 189 dead
>Mar 10, 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, Similar MCAS-induced crash; 157 dead
>Jan 8, 2020 UIA Flight 752, 737 from Tehran; 176 dead
>Jan 14, 2020: Delta Flight 89 (777โ€‘200ER) had compressor stall and dumped fuel above Los Angeles; 56 ground injuries
>Feb 5, 2020: Pegasus 2193 (737โ€‘800) overran runway at Istanbulโ€“Sabiha Gรถkรงen, 3 dead, 179 injured
>Jan 5, 2024: Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, 737 experienced door-plug blow-off mid-air, causing decompression; emergency landing; minor injuries
>Early 2024: Multiple incidents including engine fire in Newark on a 737 MAX, tire/wheel blow-offs on 777s and 757s, external panel losses during flight.
>May 2024: Emergency landing of FedEx Boeing 767 in Istanbul due to front landing gear failure
>May 2024: Corendon Airlines 737โ€‘800 burst tyre upon landing in Turkey
>Midโ€‘2024: Boeing paused 777X flight tests over engine-to-body part failure
and now
>June 12, 2025 โ€“ Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787โ€‘8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, en route to London, 242 DEAD

Seems like the Ram air turbine deployed. That only happens if there's a complete power loss or manual deployment.

CCTV doesn't appear to show a bird strike. The plane just stalls, the plane being overloaded or not enough speed from the short runway doesn't explain the RAM deployment. Still possible it's pilot error but seems less likely

Landing gear should be tucked away at this point, and it looks like flaps are not deployed. Guessing the pilots accidentally retracted the flaps instead of pulling up the landing gear, so once they left the ground effect area they had no lift. Pilot mistook this for "no thrust" and deployed ram jet to try to get emergency power to continue controlling the plane. Only "positive" thing about this is that they kept the plane flying straight and level to try to make a controlled crash instead of pulling into a useless turn, but that may have been pure panic and not bravery/diligence.

Some people are saying it looks like the landing gear was partially retracted then it stopped. All the evidence if pointing to both engines stopping at this point. No signs of a bird strike and the time span seems way too short for a pilot to decide to turn the engine off and turn off the wrong one anyway.

There have been fuel quality scandals at Indian airports before

This is why I goon my head off and eat delicious food in the week leading up to any flight.

At the end the day, you're getting in a metal tube screaming through the atmosphere and loaded with explosive jet fuel. Your safe arrival at your destination depends entirely on trusting thousands of other people.

You're trusting the manufacturer not to fuck you over with cut corners.

You're trusting the airline's maintenance.

You're trusting the pilots to be high IQ and rational if something goes wrong.

You're trusting the Arabs two rows back not to go full Allah Ackbar.

You're even trusting your own body not to stroke out or heart attack in a place where you can get no rapid help.

Any comedy of errors or bad luck happening and it's night night forever. A moment of intense panic and then absolute black oblivion.

That's pretty fucking scary when you think about it. Travel is awesome enough to take the risk but if it doesn't pan out in your favor, holy shit!

that's all true

but also the statistics show that flying is very safe
everything you listed has an incredible low probability of happening

you're more likely to choke to death on regular food in a given year (even as 18yo to 50s)
than you are dying on one flight

it's all about relative risk
not what sound the most scary
