Various places in Ukraine during the war.

Even when I got close to the front, I still felt safer than in some places in the UK, though.

Most of Mexico really isn't that bad if you speak Spanish and can talk your way out of stuff, but I need to drive in picrel to visit my in-laws and I'm on edge every time. Cartel technicals literally everywhere. I've gotten stopped a few times but they let me off once I explain I'm a tourist.

I was in Southern Beirut (the Hezbollah neighborhood) with my wife. I was crossing the road, dragging my luggage, when a black G-wagon completely cut me off. I sarcastically yelled
>Thanks!
Smiled and put my thumb up.
The G-wagon stopped. A big guy in there didn't even look at me but signalled something to someone and slowly kept driving. I thought:
>Fuck. Anyone with a blacked out G-wagon in this neighborhood is Hezbollah or highly connected to them
I went for a falafel at a cafe but kept seeing BIG guys walk slowly past looking in. I mean built big. Massive hairy born-wrestler types.I told my wife but she hadn't noticed and said I was being paranoid.
Two of these big guys came in and set next to a table next to us and stared at me. I tried to break the ice by greeting them but they barely moved their faces.
I got nervous and told my wife we're leaving. I got maybe a hundred meters down the road before two guys swiftly crossed the road and grabbed me by my wrist. One guy I remember had a teardrop tattoo.
I told my wife:
>Don't worry. I'm just gonna get a beating.
Kinda felt it was deserved.
But they wanted to search my luggage. I'd just visited the Hezbollah 'theme park' in the South,so they found lots of Hezbollah souvenirs (prayer beads, wooden ornament etc). I said:
>Hezbollah good.
Thumbs up.
They didn't seem too moved by this. But they asked me where we were going. I said the airport. They said:
>You go now
And hailed.a taxi and put us in it.

Not that crazy compared to others but in Vancouver I ended up walking down Hastings Street not knowing its reputation for being Canada's Skid Row, scariest three blocks I've ever walked, not that there's that much competition. Needles on the ground, crazy, belligerent hunched over people, yelling, I was half convinced someone was going to stab me with a needle any second. I was checking my path the whope rest of the day for needles once I was out of there.

A South African Shibbeans or whatever they call it. Was a sort of night shop with lots of black people drunk and dancing where I went with a bunch of white dudes to get beet after hours. Apparently it was quite dangerous but I made it in and out safely. I was 15 at the time though.

talked to the police 2 or 3 times later (and weeks later at home as well)

North shore of Maui outside Paia, winter. The waves are no joke. They almost killed me.

Minneapolis, about two weeks after St. Floyd died. You could feel the paranoia and outrage in the air. Protests in full swing, tons of angry young people blowing off steam from Covid. Black guys had zero patience for white strangers. Tons of white women eyeing me with disgust just for being white.

In my early 20s I was going to college in Chicago and went in with a mindset of trying to not be scared of diversity. I came from a small town and my parents were wary of urban neighborhoods and their inhabitants but I was ready to prove myself as enlightened and cultured. tldr I got into a bunch of stupid situations by being out late in bad neighborhoods.

New Orleans. Swampy and hot and had at least two niggers stalk me either to rob or pickpocket me. Never felt safe especially in the French Quarter. Even Paris felt safer.

We arrived in New Delhi at 3am and our transport from the airport wasn't coming so we had to improvise. I didn't think much of it at the time because there were three of us, but one of them confessed after we got to our lodging that we were in a pretty dangerous situation although it worked out for us that time.
