Rent a car. Public transport is next to nonexistent outside of Reykjavik.

Like anon said, although don't eat the puffin as it is not sustainable anymore and fucking up the species. The fermented shark is interesting. Blue lagoon is very touristy so Ill leave that up to you OP to decide.

If you can camp at Þakgil or rent a cabin. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Driving the south coast there will be signs pointing to all the main things to see you kind of don't need to plan it.

What's on your itinerary so far? How far are you willing to go? I did the ring road in 9 days. Keep the questions coming.

Not OP here but I want to repost from QTDDTOT since that thread is fucking useless anyway. My family are also planning to do a self drive ring road in September. Here's the map of places we plan to visit so far.
Is 9 days enough to visit all of these?
Which car rental company would you recommend? At the moment there's 4 of us
Which cities/towns would you spend your nights at? Any recommendations on accommodation?

It's going to be tight, dynjandi in particular is quite out of the way. You're looking at 4-5 hours of driving per day not including stops.
Definitely stay in Akureyri and Vik. Also highly recommend visiting vök baths and brüarfoss

I have the option to visit Iceland in either late August or mid September, which would you all recommend? I'd be staying in Reyjkavik but would definitely plan to go to Thingvellir and check out some normie friendly hiking near Reykjavik.

every view is a painting. nothing is overrated, except for anything associated with stuff in reykjavik, i don't care for cities
>>2800595
i recommend blue car rental

dynjandi should really only be on your list if you're willing to dedicate a few days to the westfjords. that region is beautiful but sparse. we spent ~5 days there most recently based out of isafjordur and there was a lot of driving.
otherwise, 9 days should be enough. we did it on a different trip in one week, but we also did it in may of 2021 and the country was empty.
food is incredibly expensive. we always stayed in an airbnb and brought food to cook, in addition to buying meat and skyr and produce in grocery stores like bonus or kronan. icelandic hotdogs for lunch every day though, so good
there will be some intense bouts of driving but it's worth it. see a roadside sign for a random waterfall? pull off, it'll be beautiful.

if you have any grass allergies at all, aim more for september. go to the sky lagoon after hiking. are you renting a car or relying on tour groups?

either way it's going to be cold as shit. Sure the thermastat may say 45-50 but with the wind blowing 30mph in your face it's miserable without very thick winter clothing.

Do you have a plan? I was considering going to Finland for the WRC, but not really sure now.
Would you mind a 2nd tag along? I just really want to do landscape photography, but I think for Iceland you'd need a car (as in drivers license) or there is really no point. In Finland howwever I can use public transport since all stages are on the highway E63.

it'll be chilly, but just pack layers and you'll be fine.
what's funny is the icelandic people can brag all they want about how cold hardy they are, but once you go inside that shit is WARM. we vastly prefer to sleep in a cool/chilly room so we were opening the windows at night to let in some cool air (even if the allergies were terrible). municipal indoor heating is free in iceland thanks to all of their geothermal lines. each airbnb we got would be toasty on the inside.
idk about miserable, i was in a hoodie + rain jacket combo most of the time, with the occasional sweater, even in late august in the remote westfjords.
for planning, how many days would you be going? if you're only based out of one place in reykjavik, you'll have to have region-based days. get ready to drive. it'll be worth it, though

also, i stand corrected, it's not grass allergies, it's weed. specifically red sorrel.

also posting in case it's useful for anyone

there's also a ton of stuff on vanilla google maps. we had one day dedicated to chasing waterfalls that we found in one general vicinity on google earth. it was a blast.

A big part of being cold hardy is having a warm place to return to. Same with being heat tolerant. Having an air-con room to return to greatly increase your ability to handle heat.

yes. Iceland has pretty much the highest unwed motherhood rate on the planet. It's bad.
