Really want to visit and hike parts of Hadrian's Wall as well, trying to see parts of the Lake District and Scotland. I'm planning on going for a couple of weeks in January or February. I'm looking to go when there would be minimal tourism. I'm a midwesterner, so I'm familiar with cold winds and snow, but I'm interested in how comparable the winter weather in the northern UK is to Midwestern Winters. Any and all advice about traveling here is welcome.

It's going to rain the entire time you're here, just prepare for that
Lake district looks very beautiful in winter though

Based history enjoyer. Hope you have a good time.

It's not exactly where you're going, ubut you may like GeoWizard's videos. There's one where he walks across Scotland in a straight line.

Might give you an insight into some of the terrain, etc.

You may get some snow and wind, especially the further north and higher altitude you go. More likely though it will be cold, wet and grey and very muddy. You'll be able to see why the UK has a particular reputation for mediocre weather. Don't be tempted to wait until spring for Scotland, Midges are no joke and they explode in numbers the second it first gets warm after winter.

it can be windy as hell, it can be humid and cold which can chill your bones, but the absolute temp is not worse than average midwest peak winter

you can get snow fall accumulation, particularly as elevation increases, doesnt often last long

uk the months of the season weather is like a month ahead of america, feb u can get random spring days

carlisle isn't a glamourous city but its got a quaint little pocket of large castle, city park, city walls, old church, town square with local shops. one rail journey often cited as a beautiful one is carilsle to Settle (direction of leads), has a nice viaduct. ribblehead viaduct

penrith or keswick are often entrance towns to the lake district.
keswick is right near the beginner hill walk of the cats bells.
lake derwentwater is nice (only been in spring)
think windemre and ambleside are more famous

northumberland coast is another great train route or travel route in general that wont have many tourists.
bamburgh castle, alnwick castle, holy island, never seen anyone say anything of note about it but berwick upon tweed looks like a neat fortified city

gretna green was a place people used to go to elope, i dont know why.
the greater region dumfries and galloway is great outdoors coast or inland, but everywhere on the map north england southern scotland has equivalent to natnioal park regions

Scotland's Midges are on another level. Get caught in a swam and you will get dozens of bites within a minute.

campsites and hostels will be closed at that time of year and there will be minimal cover for wildcamping (illegal).

Will be doable but a pain in the arse. I'm walking it mid August

Wild camping is legal in all of Scotland and tolerated in the lake district so long as you're above a few hundred metres
