Good long-term summer vacation spots
> 30 yo PhD student (31 next summer)
> 42k USD in bank
> have a remote gig job with flexible hours for 1.1k USD/month

If I decided to spend all of next summer vacation (2.5-3 months) abroad in a single country, which destinations around the world would you suggest I go to? Preferably somewhere cheap where I could get an apartment short-term, and public transportation or a cheap scooter or something so I can see the place

Thanks

I wouldn't call it cheap but it's perfectly affordable. Not the best beaches in the med but still coastal and pretty enough if you want to sit by the beach for the day. Rest of Slovenia including the Julian alps just a few hours away.

It's where I'd go in your shoes. That or north coast or Spain

Looks pretty nice, you can take a ferry to Venice for a short trip on the fly. Then you can tell people "I was feeling peckish one day so I went to Italy for lunch."

It seems like you might as well enjoy the rest of Slovenia while you’re at it, with how small it is lol

Lucca Italy. Take the train anywhere in Italy. Nice beaches nearby. Beautiful city. Great food. Good weather. Endless things to explore. Great trains for public transport. You could get a nice fully furnished apartment for around 900/month.

I lived in Dubrovnik for several months, the rent is pretty high but the food is cheapish, even cafes/coffee shops were cheap compared to the US. Slovenia has to be cheaper. The only places "outside of his budget" would be like Luxembourg, even London or Brussels you can get a cheap room (+$1,000/month) outside the city center, or your own place anywhere else.

Adriadic is nice during the summer. Would recommend.

Alright, I stand corrected. Everything Im seeing in Dubrovnik or Piran *starts* at $1,600+. At that price he *could* stay in Luxembourg. Venice, $650. Prices have skyrocketed since Corona, I need to remember that...

If thats the case....I would pick Istanbul. Cheaper, more exotic, and still have the Mediterranean vibe.

...Kyiv. Im just saying. It has some decent apartments in decent locations at decent prices.

Im so glad I did my European tour before these retarded rent prices...

I got a cheap apartment from a local at $600/month, AirBnB for a few months was about $1,000 at the time.

Under $500 a month....and thats not locally shopped, which would be cheaper than even that. If it was an unkempt place from offline local...I bet it could get down into the 300's. No water heater and shit, outskirts, sure...but...c'mon, its getting dirt cheap.

Ita right next to where I stayed during my first trip there, there is a large resturant pavillion near by it.

I ordered the salt covered fish...I didnt know it was going to make a big spectacle when I did, all the guests in all the other resturants watched them bring it out and serve it to me, as I ate alone, like the Autist I am. It took a long time to get the fish out. Super awkward.
