Why does this annoy me so much? Is it their vanity? They also spend so long trying to get their perfect photo for social media in churches and other famous landmarks they have no understanding or appreciation of. What gives?

One time I saw two Chinese girls spend at least 7 minutes setting up for the perfect selfie in front of a statue. The statue wasn't even of significant historical or artistic value. It was of a mascot character at a theme park. I don't even know who's the bigger loser here, them for taking so long to take a photo, or me for watching them and keeping count.

One thing that adds to my annoyance of this stuff personally is the knowledge that it fucking works and is successful. Like if some vapid whore wants to take her own personal photo to share with her family than ok, she's still a vapid whore but at she it's just for her own enjoyment

these are called 打卡地 in Chinese and it means like "punch-card places". It is something that people (women and boomers) will go and take photos with to "prove" that they have been somewhere or post it on social media and show off.
the important part is:

then, this photo is quickly posted to your wechat friends circle or weibo to flaunt that you have gone travelling, and thus make people like and comment on your photo

the elaborate dresses and costumes are just a side effect of the thing being a boring column or random ass building so to make the photos more interesting they dress up

example: this is a sign representing the end of a highway. Behind it is two random hills. I was dragged here as part of a tour and everyone wanted their own individual picture with the sign (there were actually two, but everyone wanted a pic with the bigger one). People queued for easily 10 minutes for their picture.

That's the spiral stairs at Fort Canning Park in Singapore. The park is actually a tourist attraction and those stairs were deliberately designed to be photogenic. There is a constant stream of tourists, instagramers, vloggers and women and couples taking photos there.

I have been enormously disappointed by the intelligence and worldliness of foreigners.
