Pretty excited to go to Mecca one day for a journey of a lifetime.
Was wondering if anybody else has ever done the pilgrimage, and has any recommendations?
Would like to take the opportunity to go backpacking around the Arabian peninsula. Anybody ever tried this?
Also heard that Mecca is the most liberal place in the Arab world, and that it's easy to meet people from all over. Especially from the ex-soviet states. Anybody ever got lucky? Seems like it could be an untapped resource.

There are no restrictions on Medina.
Technically Mecca is muslim-only but there's a fuckload of people who've been there as tourists, you don't even have to search hard. There are minor roads into the city that avoid checkpoints and many have been just let through by the guards after some smooth talking and promises to stay the fuck away from the masjid.

Medina and Makkah are two different cities, approximately 4 hours away from each other by road. Apart from the sanctified old bits of the center of Medina, non-Muslims have always been allowed there.

yes of course. saudi malls are full of american junk food places. also saudis love imported sweets, chocolate etc. which is a bit odd since their own is pretty good

I wouldnt know mate. i havent looked into it at all. However I advise you to do everything by the book over there. If something goes wrong and you're relying on the humanity of Saudis to get out, well...theyre not really human.
