Toronto
Air Canada recently started offering a pretty cheap direct service into Pearson from Phoenix. I'd like to visit for 5-6 days in December because I've never been to Canada before. I'm from the high country in AZ so the winter won't really bother me. I don't feel like paying for a rental car or hotel parking so I'm probably just going to take the shuttle downtown and stay there. Anything Canadanons suggest doing?

toronto is a bit like phoenix in that it's a more recent city that got built up pretty fast, would you go to phoenix without a car?
days are pretty short in december, not the best weather to do something outside, locals are grumpy
if it's really just an air canada flight from phoenix, toronto would be the last of the 3 I'd do

Fair in that I wouldn't, but at least from an outsider perspective downtown Toronto seemed big enough that there'd be enough to do within walking distance of a hotel. I'll look into Vancouver, but Canadian friends IRL have told me it's kind of Americanized. Anywhere you'd suggest for something more rural? I see there are a few small towns in Alberta that have airports.

>t. Toronto native
This city is quite frankly boring but it can sometimes be pretty during December. Hotels here are a fucking ripoff though, especially near YYZ Airport and by Union Station, so take that in mind. If you’re staying only in downtown you won’t need a car if you walk or take TTC bus/subway/streetcar or Go Rail/Bus depending on where you’re thinking of heading to. If you want to do Niagara Falls or anything outside of downtown you’ll probably need a car because our transit is notoriously shitty anywhere outside of the city core and sometimes even within downtown thanks to schizophrenic junkies and suicidal people (both of which continue to plague our subway system decades after these issues became a problem because our politicians refuse to spend money on safety barriers which exist in every European metro by this point.) if you’re coming to Toronto I’d say focus interests on either
>bar hopping/restaurants, Toronto has a lot of very good bars and international cuisine that can be a deal for those who work in USD. Highly recommend Cote de Boeuf on Ossington south of Dundas but go before 5pm as its walk in only and is very packed especially from Thursday to Sunday
>music. The indie scene here is kinda on its last legs but there’s many good venues doing small intimate shows: The Garrison, Bovine Sex Club, Sneaky Dee’s, Lee’s Palace, Supermarket, Velvet Underground, etc. Standard Time on Geary Ave. does some decent electronic sets and have a good setup.
>sports. Despite most of our teams being ass Toronto is a pretty dedicated city for sports. Most are also overpriced although Raptors basketball might be the least pricey ticket that time of year for major teams. Otherwise, Toronto Marlies hockey (the farm club of the Maple Leafs) play at Coca Cola Colosseum by Exhibition and tickets are usually pretty cheap for more physically intense hockey.
>whores. For Americans, tons of options for cheap given the strength of USD.

Cont’d.
>most massage places are legit but located outside of downtown or close to the airport. Blue Lagoon was a popular one for rich white kids in my hood but they suck now, Seduction Spa close to Airport Road gets better ratings and generally have hotter girls. For agencies check reviews on TERB, be wary of Asian exclusive agencies especially if you’re concerned about looks but many GFE FS options are available for well under $300 USD per hour.

But yeah any other questions ask away.

Depends on where you are. Pretty much all of the delivery bikes and drivers are jeets and surprisingly a few Georgians and Bulgarians. Downtown Toronto if you’re near the main subway terminals are packed with them but on the street it’s only really bad near Ryerson or University of Toronto. Most jeets are in Mississauga, Brampton and Scarborough with some smatterings in Etobicoke and North York. although most are getting priced out and moving into Halton Hills and Woodbridge which im sure is a thrill for the Italians and older boomer whites.

Thanks for the writeup anon. I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to travel so as long as there's some food, museums, parks, etc then I'll be happy. I'll look into a hockey game.
>Hotels here are a fucking ripoff though, especially near YYZ Airport and by Union Station
Really? When I looked at rates in December most decent three star Hilton and IHG properties were less than $120USD a night. Compare this to any American cbd and you'd easily be paying $300+ even during off season.

I guess my question is, if I want to see Canada, and Toronto and Vancouver are eh, what should I do instead? I don't speak enough French for Quebec. Canadians on /trv/ always seem to be very nihilistic but I don't believe that there's NOTHING to do in your country.

I think it’s more that December is very shitty weather-wise in most of Canada and one of the few positives we have for tourists is /out/ activities although I guess if you like skiing Tremblant is always fun. Honestly you can get away with little working French in Quebec, some people may act holier art though but generally a lot of Montrealers speak English as do some in Quebec City. The latter at Christmas is gorgeous and you’ll definitely get more out of it than Toronto during the Holidays although it can be pricier during that time but not sure how it compares to Toronto pricing.

OP here. I was out fishing today and as I was walking back to my car I struck up a conversation with this older guy. When he said he was from Toronto I asked him what he would suggest doing, he flat out said avoid it. And not to go to Vancouver either. When I asked him what I should do instead, he said either fly into Edmonton or fly into Calgary and take a bus to Banff. So that's probably what I'll be doing. Canadian rockies in the winter look pretty dope.

This guy sounds like a Wildrose cocksmoker. Banff is insanely overrated and stupid expensive. You genuinely would enjoy Quebec City more. Better food culture and tons of wildlife spots along the Laurentides. Also sugar shacks, always a treat to try raw maple syrup right fresh from the morning sap.

>Banff is insanely overrated and stupid expensive
Few of my Canadian friends warned me about this but I was looking at prices for mid-December and everything seemed really cheap. Round trip to Calgary is only $200, $50 shuttle bus, and even the really nice 4 star hotels were only like $80usd a night. Food isn't too bad either. I imagine nobody wants to go when it's sub-zero. There are a few short trails and the Gondola and shit. It seems pretty touristy but I think the nature and smaller crowds in the winter will make up for it. I'd visit Quebec but it actually seemed more expensive than Banff in the winter and I understand there's a pretty large cultural divide between English/French Canada. I'd rather save that for a different, longer trip.

Where are you seeing $80 USD hotels in Banff for December? Like I can understand if you’re there midweek but even weekend December hotels are usually minimum $250 USD per night. Quebec City hotels for the same weekend are as low as $100 USD and the 4 stars like the downtown Hilton are $150 USD.
Also you should check that the bus to Banff from Calgary will run then cause the weather is unpredictable while Quebec City has regular flights, bus routes and rail that aren’t as unpredictable.

This was a quick Google search but I remember a few of them having an even cheaper rate for 4+ nights on their site. Busses are still scheduled to run almost hourly by a few companies I looked at. I have almost all of December off from uni so I can get the cheaper midweek rates and I can afford to stay extra days if the TCH or airport in Calgary get shut down. I will look into Quebec City and give it some thought though, it's just the flight is almost $700 from Phoenix.

> December
why not do a ski holiday at Banff (sunshine village etc) or somewhere else in the Rockies?
if you insist on Toronto, there is a distillery district which has a christmas market in december.
a common Tiktok trend is to skate on Lake Ontario, so see if you can make that work. there is also skating path somewhere in etobicoke iirc - but in both cases it probably won't be frozen enough until January. if you play hockey there is free casual pick-up hockey ("shinney") at Toronto rinks like Christie Pitts, but again depends on weather.

The 50/50 almost makes me want to visit Canada more so I can get my own impression. I'll probably keep an eye out for something cheap to Quebec since this thread seems to regard it the highest, but I can do 5 days in Banff for about $1k and it seems relaxing enough to keep me from killing myself after finals and before having to deal with extended family for holidays

>AirBnB in Mexico city for a month for that much
Yeah I could, but that's not really the trip I want. I want to spend a cozy week in a snowy, unfamiliar city. That's like telling someone to go spend a month in Taiwan because it would cost the same as a weekend in the Alps. I don't really understand this board's obsession with "value" and doing everything as cheap as possible, all the time. Yeah, Canada's more expensive per day than Mexico. But like, if I want to see Canada, I'm okay with that? Why would people bother coming to the US if we're so expensive to visit compared to other countries? Why visit the US if you can just go to Mexico or SEA for a month instead?
