I only make 60k a year but only stay at five star hotels when I travel.

Good for you anon, vacations are supposed to be vacations and not deep soul searching processes - that's what addiction is for

I make enough to stay at hotels, but I only stay at hostels, because I'm desperate to socialize and get laid (hasn't happened yet).
The only reason to stay in a hotel over a hostel is if you have someone to travel with, or if you're in some third world shithole where fancy hotels are not only super cheap, but also the only place to actually sleep comfortably

Good for you. I hope you enjoy them. In a lot of countries, luxury is quite affordable.

I respect frugality, but I’m not going to let some angry internet stranger deride my personal choices. Nobody who is enjoying him or herself is doing travel wrong.

Star count isn't an indicator of quality. I have stayed at excellent two and three stars and shitty dirty five stars

I don't like staying at a hotel in Europe. They're always away from the old town areas of the city. You can't wash your clothes. You don't have a fridge or a kitchen or a second room if you want to watch TV and your girlfriend wants to sleep. And the hotel rooms in Europe are always tiny. The only time I stay in a hotel in Europe is on the beach.

That's because liberals are in charge of Google Maps. There are ways to tell a good hotel though. Do they have clean rooms? Are Indians at the front desk? Do people act friendly when you call? Ect

Plus money and location matter. The more competition, the better the choices. Also local culture matters.

How does anyone survive on that 1980s salary? I make four times that and am still struggling in 2025.

Half the price, but I listen to tiktoks without headphones and a bathrooms thats always covered in water, evdrything...the toilet is always sprayed with water (shit water from spraying water on their anus as a wipe).

By having taxes already paid for.
Yuro salaries are after taxes. So if you hear of a 30k/year salary, in US terms if would be closer to a 50k salary if not more since it's 30k after taxes, healthcare, retirement...

Worked in France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg.
Yes they are, local/housing taxes aside. Or taxes on land/assets but nobody on the chans is in that bracket anyway no matter how much /biz/ loves to larp. Taxes are extracted on the employer's level these days, not filed after beng received by the employee.
The pay you get at the end of the month is what you get, not what you THEN declare for extra taxation nowadays (unless you're in Luxembourg where people love filing their taxes because they get returns every year lel)

$50k still isn't shit in 2025. That's more like 1990s or 2000s pay.

$120k would struggle in Austin, TX with a family. it's only good for a bachelor or if you're already loaded/paid off home and just looking to buy ongoing consummables and get health insurance.

I hope you know how to leverage credit card points and transfers and aren’t paying out of pocket.

If not, check out The Points Guy and Monkey Miles.

My ex was a black belt at it. Every year she’d plan a trip using points, and the last time we traveled we stayed in different parts of Italy for almost nothing—I just ended up paying for the food.
