Don't do it.
Alaska fishing is the most desperate dead-end you can find. Most workers cannot read, are missing many teeth, or do not speak English.
Work shifts are 12 hours on, 6 hours off, 12 hours on, 6 hours off, etc.
This immediately disorients you as to what day/time it is. It becomes more surreal from there. You will puke from seasickness until you get used to it. If you get an ear infection from wet/cold 24/7, you will get kicked off the boat. Then you may have to work in a cannery on land just to get back home.
No days off. No privacy. Very military. You will stop showering/doing laundry just to get sleep. You will be wet & cold all day/night.
The only way to make real money is to do it for more than 2 seasons. Then your contract will move up in percentage of shares of the fish caught.
Free room & board but not free. Very hard work.
Instead, buy a used van, park in temperate Seattle or West Coast, and work at UPS. Benefits immediately, pay increases quickly, sleep in the van/avoid rent until you are on your feet. Faster money and easier than a boat.
Not to mention the risk of injury/death on a boat. Higher than being on dry land.
