Hi /trv/, I’m going to Japan again November, this time I want to rent a car to get to hard to access areas. I need fill out a form for an IDP correct? What was your experience with rental cars for those that have used it. Is there a rental car chain that you prefer using? I saw that you have to fill up gas with the attendant doing it for you, what do you tell them exactly to fill up? Just say 86 or regular? I’m planning to use a rental to reach places a train or bus can’t access, maybe I’ll plan a road trip too for the hell of it

Which one? There are 4 or 5 but it's not that important seeing as they're all right next to the river draining to the sea. I don't remember any shitty odours from last November though, nor from any other beach I've been to in Japan.
If there was litter around maybe you got there just after some Yanks or Chinese left the beach?

No they dont give a fuck and/or will not confront about it, if anything its always a game to hookup a westerner and I've been given helpful dating advice from Japanese. But Japanese girls can be a pita and honestly not worth it if you dont speak Japanese. Korea on the other hand. Holly shit if you have a Korean GF men will litterally shout the equivalent of "whore" to you or her and even get physical cock block at clubs and bars.

I live and work in Japan (zogbot civilian) and do very well so its a different dynamic. This should go without saying but being even semi fluent in Japanese is a major powerscaler. The girls into cosplay, J-fashion allmost never speak english. If I a retard desu am able to learn it even kanji reading in a year in the US there's no excuse.
Just realize that Japan isnt a thridie shithole and girls will not throw themselves at you for being white (or black) and really only like 3% will date a forginer or more accurately get into a relationship and not just a quick hookup. For that matter they will almost never initiate flirting but eye contact is near gaurenteed que. Japanese girls are also really conservative (not religiously) but sex is always this silly "nono we shouldn't do this" taboo game you have to play.
My advice is strike up a simple convo and compliment, being a cheesy gentleman putting girls first pays dividends. Play the game of "oh no we missed the last train guess we need a hotel". Learning Japanese and practicing speaking to get laid as shallow as that sounds is a powerful motivator to study and initiate convos to practice.
I actually weirdly enough have had more luck in otaku spaces and events. My current sugarbaby worked part time at a concept cafe and dresses as a catgirl maid (a really beautiful coord too) just for fun. I feel so lucky becuase it is a weeb lottery win and she's nice enough to invite me to idol/cosplay events and cons and is super kinky in bed. We are talking about going steady but I wanted a SD/SB relationship becuase I am gone 6 to 9 months of the year for work. I should say having a car and taking a Japanese girl to Hawaii is an instant wife up moment.
If your really desperate for easy lay just hangout around the temple uni international school or any language school and you find your dishelved enby weeb student if your that desperate kek.

Also I am way past the coomer games and is really kinda shitty in Japan. Everyone is always like
>nooo dont be a weeb and indulge in anime shit/Akihrabra, idol events, cons etc that's cringe.
I dont care and I try to go to every event or popup-store, even asked by my fwb to help out at her booth or setup (for like VN games or her shop). Gotten so many numbers & すきですね from people, and practice my 日本語.
Weeb/Otaku culture and by extention Akihrabra and these events are on the decline so I love supporting them even if its for some series I dont know or care about.

Akihabara has been on stagnate decline just a much as japan as whole has been. Anime is also declined, you wont see the same level of production of the 80s and 90s much of which is still to this day part of the bubble collapse and huge debt they have.

Anons retarded
Anime makes significantly more money now than it used to in the 80s. The reason why those 80s OVAS looked so good was because they had both concentrated talent and the country had a LOT of money to throw at the wall. Most of the OVAs actually kinda sucked and only a handful of them are remembered. Anime has more reach and merchandise more than ever in current year, nostalgiafags just forget that there are way more shows being produced per season than back in the ancient days. Every studio can’t just simply land a star studded team of extremely good animators, some can but most won’t.
If he thinks anime actually makes less than it used to, then I’d love to see the sources he’s pulling up

It takes about one hour to go around the Yamanote Line. In other words, the maximum time required from one station on the Yamanote Line to another station on the same Yamanote Line is 30 minutes.
However, if you take shortcuts on the JR Chuo Line or subways, the time required can be reduced even more.
For example, a typical trip from Tokyo Station to Shinjuku Station takes 30 minutes either going right or left on the Yamanote Line, but only 13 minutes on the JR Chuo Line.

This might sound dumb as fuck but am I okay to book through a hotel's website as a tourist instead of using a middle-man?
I've used Expedia for my last 3 trips to Japan with no issues, always booking APA hotels.
I've got bookings for later this year, and just yesterday out of curiosity I decided to check the APA hotel website to see what prices are like only to discover that Expedia is overcharging me by $600 for the exact same booking compared to reserving through APA themselves.
That's pretty fucked if you ask me.
I haven't paid yet as I chose to pay at arrival when booking through Expedia. Should I just cancel it and book through APA directly?
In fact, anyone have any recommendations for budget/mid-tier hotels in Tokyo and Osaka? Looking for approx $600-700USD/per week budget range. Because now I'm thinking about how much cheaper other hotels may be by doing direct bookings.

There was a guide in the Tokyo thread for Tokyo but I didn't do anything there and now I kinda regret it and I feel like I've missed my chance and I can't do anything here.
Also now suddenly the girls on dating apps from Tokyo popped up now that I'm gone but since I'm in Kyoto now I'm suddenly matching with countless of women from Osaka where I'll go next. That's nice and all but I want to get laid in Kyoto now and I get no matches here because no one seems to be here.
Also why the fuck is this city full of Italians? It's so many of them. I didn't see any in Tokyo but many Jews in Tokyo. Kyoto also has a bunch of Jews. Tourists I've never seen in my life in Europe.

より is just "than" except it comes after the comparator, not before
it has some other uses like to say that something is "more x" than something else
e.g. より良い - better
Or it can also mean "from"
新世界より - from the New World
but those are kinda exceptions, normally it's pretty much the English "than" or "compared to"
ほっかいどうはさむいですか。
Speaking of Hokkaido, is it cold?
はい、とうきょうよりずっとさむいです。
Yes, compared to Tokyo, very cold.

I'm in the middle of booking train tickets, figuring out timeslots. If I miss my train, would I have to pay full price for a new ticket/timeslot or would someone at the station be able to assist by showing my missed train ticket?

Do you think you can save money on food by eating bento from convenience stores?
Bento is half price when the supermarkets are closing, and there are many places that offer one coin (500 yen) lunches in the office area.

Yes, and poor. Most capsule hotels/hostel have shared fridge service, though, so look for supermarkets instead. They are cheaper and sell more variety on cooked foods than konbini.
Maruetsu, Mybasket. Life and regional chains are the best options(most are already automated so no need to use nihongo). You can also buy those huge 2L tea jugs for the same price you would get a 600ml bottle at a konbini/street vendor.
Also Donquijote for dairy products. I still miss their 1L Hokkaido milk for just 190yen and steamed potatoes. Yogurt was also cheaper there than supermarkets.

I looked it up online. Which I did in the States. When I had internet. And not merely wi fi. I compared prices, cross-referenced locations, figured out the one that was closest to my language school (I am studying Japanese full time for a year and 3 months), while still being reasonably priced. I wasn't reliant on wi fi. The same wi fi that just so happens to disconnect the second you leave its range. Which is extraordinarily unhelpful if you wish to use things like google maps or Navitime. And, by the by, everyone neglected to mention that you need to pay a premium to get English UI for Navitime. Yeah, I'm not doing that. And even if I didn't, that still leaves the issue of not having a a data plan in Japan. You could say that wi fi is about as useful as tits on a man for the very fresh expats.

Oh, and obviously, I went through tedious process of acquiring a visa, which I sent a request for via mail to the Japanese embassy in Chicago. I already had a passport from years ago when I lived in Paris. I just needed to update it and send in my picture, info, etc. Thankfully, I lived in the States, and didn't need to send in 40 dollary doos for the processing fee. Because America. Fuck Yeah. I also got the COE application from the language school for my student visa. This, of course, goes without saying.

Thirdly, and lastly, the very fact that you had to ask that question to begin with is precisely the reason why I am moving to Japan. I cannot tolerate your presence anymore. You people twist my insides and befuddle my mind with a foul malady that I can scarcely begin to describe. In my 38 years of existence, I have come to loathe the very thought of you people. The way you have treated me, besmirched my name, falsely imprisoned me (twice), bullied me mercilessly, and looked at me the same way the village views the public self-fornicator.
Your first inclination was not to help, but to denigrate. That is a microcosm America, the West, whatever the fuck you want to call it. Whatever it is you deign to classify it, I cannot stand it a nanosecond longer. I don't care if I have to spend another 2, 3, or 5 years learning Japanese and struggling to inure myself into Japanese culture. Because I was never American enough for you people anyway. And the best part? Even though I find myself in a strange land amidst a people whose language I cannot comprehend?
Nothing has fucking changed.

Lunch I had Tobiccho since I saw it in MK japan guide. First time trying these sardines so that was cool, had to wait an hour though even though its only me.
Last day tomorrow in Tokyo before I return on Saturday, I’m planning to speedrun Akihabara, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya all in the same day, will I make it?

You can get capsule hotels for as low as 35$ a night, you may be able to get into a hostel for 20$ if not in Tokyo, but with that budget, not a chance. Not even close. You need at least 100$ per day you are planning to spend, and this is a literal starvation budget

lmfao get fucked
ramen 3x a day - 2400 yen
a few beers - 2000 yen
metro day ticket - 700 yen
free attractions - 0 yen
that's 34 usd
you could do cheaper if you ate at the konbini and didn't drink

FWIW it's just kind of a gimmicky way of eating regular somen noodles, the noods themselves aren't anything different from what you'd find in a grocery store or at any other establishment that serves wheat noodles. It's probably fun in a group setting, idk I'm not really a cold noodle fan so I never tried it.

Last month near cine city square I saw a 9 years old looking kid dressed like a nigger throwing a tantrum because his dad was taking him back home, 3 teens restraining one of their "friends" who was yelling like crazy she wanted to die and a group of stinky adults drinking cheap alcohol in front of the 7 eleven littering and listening to loud music from a speaker while talking to 2 cops who wouldnt arrest them for sone reason. All of this next to a long line of prostitutes offering their services.
I could only think " I didn't come to Japan to see the same crap I see in my 3rd world shithole". Fucking disgusting.

Which I did run across in Tokyo, but not near the levels of my city in USA. Still unpleasant. For example I was sitting in a square outside an office building in Asakasa and a Japanese druggie kept circling the area I was sitting at talking to himself and looking at me. Lasted for around 15 mins. Granted, I wasnt really on edge but it was unnerving to experience this in Tokyo. Im used to it back home and can at least speak the language and tell them to fuck off
Yesterday I sat across from a woman on the train with the most striking epicanthal folds ive ever seen. Probably the most prominent ive ever seen on a person but god damn it really made her stand out, absolutely beautiful. Very modest chick as well, was probably on her way to work given what she was wearing (industry type garb not business) but she had nice hair and nails and a more tan complexion I just hope she knows how beautiful she is! I’ll never see her again in my life

Hello faggots, based gaijin here. Never been before but my pal and I plan to go to Japan in late march and early april next year (for a little over two weeks). Here's our basic itinerary:
>Fly out to Tokyo, stay 5 days and do typical bullshit. Probably stay in a hostel with private rooms so we can screw around with other travelers
>Train to Nagoya to see workers from my job's extension office and watch the Suzuka GP, stay 4 days or so
>Train to Nagano to fuck around with the snow monkeys and sit in the hot springs, 2 days should be good enough
>Fly to Sapporo to see the swedish village and taste the beer, 3 days
>Fly home via Narita

I'm planting roots in Japan. How difficult would it be to buy one of those Elon houses and get it planed somewhere on the island? Obviously, anywhere near a city is out, but apart from that? You want to buy an American prefab and install it in Japan?
Extremely difficult. It has to comply to the latest building code, i.e. be able to withstand eartquakes and tropical storms and not fold like a house of cards.
You can instead buy a house in the countryside for around 1000€ or less and be stuck on a 10 year contract of renovating it to the latest code and contributing to rural Yamachokobononakadashi, population 10 grumpy geezers.
Or get a job and have the employer vouch for you in order to rent somewhere downtown or in the suburbs, if you want to live closer to civilization

I love a lot of things about Japan, but my very favorite is probably the sheer amount of weird subcultures. I love places like these, made for a specific kind of person, where that kind of person can gather. It's just so cool.

Following up because I just found the receipt -
Luck Rack in Tokyu Plaza. Harajuku had a load of smoke to be bought, its all at a good discount also - there was a little cosmetic section as well.
Harajuku in general was absolutely stellar, better than what I expected and I was there in the torrential rain.
I regret not copping a pair or two of Onitsuka Tiger shoes while out there, cunts are expecting me to pay £300 for one pair back home fuck off

On another note does anyone have an opinion on relatively cheap but good cameras? I want to use something better than my phone for the trip. Willing to get a DLSR honestly, but I've always seen people lugging equipment bags around for those so idk.

First you need to find a good location, most good one are taken then it's going to cost you about 20~30k$ for the land and then it's up to you how much you want to spend on house construction.
But like how do you plan to stay there if you're fussing over money you clearly don't have enough for any of the rich man visas like opening a business, Japanese school or wealthy mans visa.

Blog post: I'm at a crossroads of my life. I am thinking about settling down in either Taiwan or Japan. I currently live in Taiwan and the country is very friendly towards me and other respectful foreigners which I deeply appreciate, but I'm having difficulty learning the language and I wonder if I can put aside my extreme dislike of the weather and some other issues long enough to make this my home. I speak Japanese somewhat well and I'm wondering if switching to Japan would be better for me since the language would be easier for me and the weather would be better.
But I hear that Japan is chudding out very hard right now and I'm looking to settle permanently. For those of you who have lived there or just know a lot about Japan, is it really that chuddy these days? I don't want to live somewhere where I am looked down upon as a nuisance by the majority of people.

i'm an english teacher living in the countryside so i'm sure my opinion will hold little water for a metropolitan digital nomad citygod but in my time here i haven't encountered a single instance of discrimination, unless we count the so-called "positive" kind (ie. the staff at a conbini making my coffee for me because they were uncertain if i knew how to operate the machine, etc). i speak OK japanese (N2) and IMO it's hard to overstate just how many doors that will open for you - japanese people know that japanese is hard and if you're able to at least communicate they'll know you're willing to work hard and put in the reps to fit in to society and you're not going to be one of "those" foreigners.
that said i am white and from a western country, and i would say that's definitely a huge advantage; i know chinese and korean and especially filipino people who have lived here longer than me and speak better japanese than me who will get teed off on by cranky obaachans over the smallest shit

It's me again. I asked about shopping in Osaka, the Elon house, and...posted that deer. Can't really remember. Anyway, this is going to be a massive tl;dr, so...
>get to Japan on the 23rd of September
>go on a guided tour of Nara park
>get stranded there for over eight hours because the bus and tour guide leave me there on purpose, despite me being at the departure point on time
>Spent the subsequent EIGHT FUCKING HOURS trying to either hail a taxi or navigate the train system (I was used to the train system in the Osaka metropolitan area, but not the one from the Nara station, it appeared to be way more complicated)
>Taxis kept straight up ignoring my gaijin ass (white and blonde as fuck, 6'0, clean shaven, not Brad Pitt lookin by any means, but certainly no ugly piece of shit either). At least 20-30 taxis must have ignored me that day.
>Finally get back to my hotel at 11pm.
>The next day, I reach my apartment, but I come down with a massive fucking headache, sore throat, runny nose, etc.
>Find out I have a fever today (pic related).
>Got language classes in literally two more days
>Probably not going to let me step foot through the door, because it sounds like I contracted COVID (again, never took the clot shot, pure blood, etc)
>tried to hail more taxis tonight
>more of them straight up ignored me and bypassed me altogether to pick up the Japanese men and women
>Again, they turned their red signs to orange at the last second
>So fucking depressed now
Anyway, not sure why I decided to share this blog post. Probably going to take a one-man, unguided tour to Aokigahara tommorrow. I have discovered that Japanese hospitality has been greatly oversold. /blog

>hailing taxis on the street
Doesn't always work in my experience. Especially in touristy areas like Nara. A lot of the time taxis in transit are either in use or reserved and heading to their pickup point. You'd have better luck finding the nearest station or shopping center and just walking up to any taxi that's idling nearby.
Sucks about the COVID though. There was a resurgence and I think I also got it early last month, not much of a fever but plenty of mucus all week long and I lost my sense of taste and smell for a 2-3 days; I'm a pureblood myself.

If you suspect you have influenza, I suggest you immediately go see a Japanese doctor and have him or her prescribe you baloxavir marboxil within 48 hours
>Baloxavir marboxil, sold under the brand name Xofluza, is an antiviral medication for treatment of influenza A and influenza B. It was approved for medical use both in Japan and in the United States in 2018, and is taken as a single dose by mouth. It may reduce the duration of flu symptoms by about a day, but is prone to selection of resistant mutants that render it ineffectual.
>Baloxavir marboxil is an influenza medication, an antiviral, for individuals who are twelve years of age or older, that have presented symptoms of this infection for no more than 48 hours. The efficacy of baloxavir marboxil administered after 48 hours has not been tested.
>Baloxavir marboxil was developed as a prodrug strategy, with its metabolism releasing the active agent, baloxavir acid (BXA). Baloxavir acid then functions as enzyme inhibitor, targeting the influenza virus' cap-dependent endonuclease activity, used in "cap snatching" by the virus' polymerase complex, a process essential to its life-cycle.

If I have an Arcade IC card from my local arcade, will that work in japan? And no I don't mean my progress, just will it work at all or do I need to get another card there?

I'm looking for recommendations.
Going to Osaka next saturday and I'll be staying for a week. Originally I wanted to go visit the Musclegirl Bar one day but as I wanted to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance I came to the realization that the next open slot is in November.
So that's kind of a bummer. Are there other thematic bars with msuclegirls or tomboys in them? I also welcome just other general recommendations
