West Coast US
Western NYer here, never been to the West Coast. I've got some vacation time to use this year so I'd like to check it out. What are your best recommendations for interesting places to visit? I'm less into the outdoors and more into food, architecture, art, and museums.

Los Angeles is the obvious choice. Grand central market. Lots of museums
The Peterson is cool if you pay extra for the Vault and you like cars. But why come to the west coast if you don't like the outdoors? That's literally the biggest reason to come over. Maybe go to San Francisco and take a decent drive north and go through the redwood forests. Visit bigfoot/hippe country. San Diego and Orange County have nice beaches.

Avocado and grilled beef in a tortilla?
Pretty easy to make at home.

Save for Portland, you can safely ignore the PNW. The region is a cultural backwater and Portland is the only beacon of civilization in the wasteland. If you're into beer, there are a lot of great microbreweries in the area.

I love San Diego but it doesn't have much culture outside of food. Lots of military bros and college kids. Not much notable architecture outside the Salk Institute and UCSD library.

OP don't go to San Diego. In fact, avoid most of SoCal really. It's not worth the risk of ICE abusing their powers and putting you in a cell until a supervisor realizes the mistake. Not to mention the constant riots and protestors who are equally as bad.

Hey OP, another Portlander (OR) here. If for some reason you decide to come here, I would recommend generally avoiding downtown and going to the east side of the city. The big advantage of Portland is it’s size/density so it’s relatively quick to get around and generally not too crowded

Yeah yeah, East Oregon called it wants you to know it’s racist and smokes weed and it’s way cooler. Political bait aside, if you’re not looking for Outdoors, and want Museums, the PNW is a pretty barren spot. It’s Frontier Country, and while there’s a fantastic museum about the trail out near Baker City, if you don’t care about braving the Wilderness, there’s not much for you up here. Fort Vancouver is cool, and the camps in the San Juan that nearly started Brit War 3 but the Oversimplified Video on the Pig War pretty much covers it. Museums and Art are just urban hub things so LA and San Diego. Maybe the Spanish Missions for living museums but you’d have to want to drive to them. The West Coast was America trying to hold onto the nature while building farmland and foresting zones, so our art quota’s more in what we see on sunsets. Besides, all the open drugs have made the downtowns pretty ugly, so there’s nothing to see there anyway. If nature isn’t your thing, just ignore the PNW. We don’t want you up here anyway you fucking cityfag.

So you're going to come to the most history-less region of one of the youngest countries on Earth. I'll admit we have good food here (like anywhere in the US) but imo the nature is the only reason to come here, unless Hollywood is your thing. I'd say the only interesting architecture on the west coast imo is San Francisco, which looks really nice but I haven't been in years so I don't know how the homeless situation is and I hear car break ins are frequent.

it's not on the coast but vegas is the best city in the west, cheap entertainment, party atmosphere. san francisco is the best city for culture, architecture, food. don't bother with portland or seattle. san diego has the best beaches and amazing summer weather. monterey bay and wine country are lesser-known gems with beautiful nature and scenery. i would recommend amusement parks, didneyland or magic mountain in socal, great america or six flags in norcal. there's good food, fresh air, unique climate, kind people. if you love nature, lake tahoe or yosemite are impressive. based on what you stated though, you'd do best with sf, la, sd, the rest of the state is either quaint foodie stuff or nature stuff. once more don't bother with oregon or washington. the columbia gorge is nice though.

Portlands Food scene is pretty spectacular. The waterfalls near closer to the Portland are worth a half days activities and can be pretty much be done by car.
Outside of that

idk, maybe down in California but as a native Oregonian I would never set foot in the Republic to the south.

The food in Portland is Ok. People in the northwest are used to terrible food. So Portland is a step up compared to a lot of places in Oregon and Washington. But I wouldn't call it a culinary destination. Unless your coming from Canada where the food is abysmal, you probably won't be impressed with the food in Portland.
