Remote Worker General - /rwg/
Greetings, fellow Nomad Chads. This is the general for all things related to remote work and digital nomadism.
What destinations are looking good for 2026?
Which destinations are now plonked?
What projects are you currently working on?

Pointless thread. Anywhere with fiber and reliable power is fine. The only factor in getting work done is self discipline.

For example, I can make 10k usd a month while living 5 minute scooter ride to walking street. Some other guys have to go sequester themselves in north chonburi because the temptation to walk outside and be retarded is too high, but they still want it on the weekend.

Tldr go where you want it doesn't matter

if your company cares about where you are, then your corporate IT security will be able to detect what you are doing regardless. you are not smarter than your entire IT department
the chances are that your company doesn't really care where you are as long as you don't break any laws by doing so
for example data protection laws. you might think such laws are "retarded" if you're a typical 4chan narcissist but companies take them seriously. facebook got fined a billion dollars a couple of years ago for breaking data protection law. i have known people who were instantly dismissed from their jobs because of it

>the chances are that your company doesn't really care where you are as long as you don't break any laws by doing so
Slightly disagree here.

Most IT managers don't care as long as you are the run of the mill 15-16/hr helpdesk easily replaceable keyboard monkey. The people who really are troublesome bunch are everyone around you which is why managers will care. If Karen hears you bragging about YUP LIVING IN SEA LOLOL! and word gets around you know those crusty old hags in HR are going to flip some serious shit about it. Be it they are man you can do that and they can't; or they have legit concerns about company data due to EVIL CHINA and some episodes of lockedupabroad they saw once.

My boss has on the record stated he doesn't give a shit where I work or where I am, but I can't be using it as an excuse to not be able to login and perform my work. Besides he knows I have a VPN to a friends house so by all logs I am around Chicago.

Just remember if you think NordVPN or other shits are the way to go, we know those IP blocks they are easy to see and most security setups flag them out of the gate.

I have about 1800 hit my account every 2 weeks living abroad as a Sr. Systems engineer; however something that I do that is seems you aren't doing is putting anything into a 401k/403b/etc or splitting pay to a pure savings account

Living Abroad I have a chime account that gets ~800 taken out specifically to a 3.75% APY savings and emergency access account. I also have around 400ish(not sure after matching what it is) going to my 401k. 1800 is more than enough to do anywhere outside Scandinavia, which isn't too hard even there. 0 CC debt so it's mostly banked. My average Airbnb is ~600/mo(I do all utilities included places, yes I know there are cheaper options) food and booze ~400, with transportation+sim ~100-125. I don't count the attractions too much as usually they are <2-3 USD a visit and not worth keeping track of.

Planning to end the DN lifestyle next year after 10ish years of doing it. Not feeling old, just have enough to buy a house and with the world climate with where it's at, seems like the logical play.

That’s how I feel too. If you watch Raymond thoughts and minds you’ll see how much anguish he feels for having a 70k mortgage on one property, and a 2nd house that he fixed up himself but can’t sell because it’s in bumfuck Ohio. I understand that real estate always has value, but the idea of not being able to quickly offload it like stocks or even PMs is nightmare fuel

Anon you understand how cheap it is to live when you have a house right?

Property taxes can be ~200-1500/year depending on the state
Utilities are what you make it, my 2br a few years back during lockdowns was ~200-250/mo
An A->B car is cheap and all you need

Everything else is how responsible you are, meaning if you work as a cashier for 12/hr(which is stupid low) you're still living fine assuming you work 4 days a week. I'm just going to keep my remote job till the wheels of the company fall off and at the very least have a backup plan if remote gigs go south.

>>2830808
>mortgage
YIKES, if you're digital nomading for 10 years and don't have at least 250k saved lol. I plan to buy in full so I have good bargaining power for auction houses and foreclosure short sales. A 125-155k house in the midwest, hell even some of the smaller rocky mountain towns, or outside of the inner city of TX places(assuming you homestead) isn't terribly hard to find.

Going off your taxes you must live in a decently high taxed state. There is a huge difference between 83k take home in a low-income state and 83k in say... LA, NYC, Seattle etc. If you're truly making ~110k/year good job, but not sure why this place lives rent free then. Just grind out 5-6 years and retire, if you play your cards right shouldn't be hard.

>>2830803
>per week
Here is where I am having a really hard time believing that, you're telling us you drop a grand every 2 weeks just into taxes? That alone would put you in NYC territory where 83k is scraping the barrel. Also when brought up in previous times it's OH MAN THIS IS WEEKLY WITH OT! For all we know you do a hellish week of 6 days 12hrs a day and the next week is maybe 10-12 just to stay on the books. I used that trick a few times when I was growing up as a cashier to impress some people as a cashier around holidays.

No one cares how much you make, hell I'm technically "under market" for my skills and such but enjoy the job security I have if budget cuts come, flexibility my boss gives me as he knows we are all. I often find the people who brag about how much they make or need to compare paychecks, often have the most baggage and horrible spending habits.

I have to connect to the company VPN with a company laptop which is locked up tight so I can't set up any software on it. I can only pick a wifi to connect to. Is there something like a wifi box that can use my router's VPN and that I can connect my company laptop to?
Anonymous No.2831069 [Report] >>2831070
What about timezone on your company laptop? It's enough you have to present something on your screen on a Teams meeting and everyone will see you were supposed to be in Europe but time on you computer is 5 hours ahead.
I imagine that changing of time on company laptop is blocked by the policy

You'd have to do some PPTP setup not familiar with it. If you don't have any kind of admin rights to your PC and it's that heavily locked down, doubt your company would be okay with it. Besides if you have email on a company phone or the like GG. Number 1 way we've found people working in new states or countries is their VPN for the phone disconnects and it pings in to our systems about someone being in Chile or Thailand.

I'm really just jealous.
I tried for that for more than 10 years including time spent (wasted) in school, but the high paying, full remote, international jobs are awfully hard to come by and competitive.
Then I even got one! but the project, and its multiple teams, was horrifically dysfunctional, cut throat, stressful, and I kept getting undermined by peasants and finally managed out and laid off.

This happened almost two years ago and I still seethe. I have a pretty solid net worth now, but might try again. Just do my thing in Asia for a while longer then head back for another effort of something like that before I may finally just throw in the towel and henry miller my career.

>>2831086
>I'm just not going to worry about a job for a year or two
Do exactly that. I have about half your money and haven't had any paychecks or unemployment money come in for about a year at this point. My net worth still has only risen since then.
Theoretically I guess I could retire at these expenses, and investment performance, but that still seems like too much uncertainty to can a career when I'm not even 40 yet. Not worried about a sabbatical though. You could very likely just end it though and ride your net worth if you desired and pull the trigger.

From here, I think my decisions will be guided by which level I want to retire at + what roles I find acceptable. I can chill (in SEA/thailand/where) taking exploratory converstaions for work pretty much globally. if the opportunity sounds neat enough, I'd go see if the role sucked or not.

I'll be picky with any new roles whether my own business or unemployment, but I'm opening up at least 15min-1hr conversations or old connection text exchanges
