Visiting Europe in Winter
Is it even worth coming here as a tourist during the Winter months, or should I go somewhere else and save Europe for some other time?
Obviously Christmas and New Years can be litty, but I mean besides that. Will the short days, cold weather, dead nightlife, and occasional site closures hamper the experience and make me regret coming at this time? Or is it just as good as any time to visit?

Depends on why you are visiting.

If most of the stuff you plan on seeing/doing is indoors then absolutely. Plus flights and hotels are cheaper.

As a tourist/backpacker, basically doing the same things you would in the summer. I don't give a fuck about skiing, I can do that at home in the states. I wanna go to see all the sites, culture, maybe mingle with locals/hostel guests, feel alive, just have a good time in a different country.

Unless you want to lounge in a park or go to a beach then you can do all that just fine in the winter. You just have to dress appropriately to be comfortable. As long as you are moving, you’re fine. You aren’t going to be playing golf or soccer or anything but if you want to see sights and eat then your good and the weather won’t impact you very much.

>dead nightlife
Why would it be dead? Clubs are still packed on the weekends

i live near paris, it suck during winter
seriously don't come during winter, it's dark, cold and sad
if you could come in summer or later like may i would def wait
i guess as a tourist staying inside the city it's not as bad, but paris is way better in summer

As others have noted it's not optimal for typical hostel trash/backpacking activities. Save it for the summer months if that's what you're looking for.

It is pretty special if it's a romantic trip or you have connections wherever you may be going. The Christmas markets in the Germanic countries are neat. The skiing is spectacular and cheaper than in the US.

But yeah, it's cold, the days are short and the people are stressed. 7 years ago I spent a December in Vienna with a friend. Maybe it was because I had a group to latch onto that I enjoyed it so much but it was really neat to hang out with a bunch of university students on holiday. It would have been kind of dull without that.

Yeah it's fine that's all indoor shit. You're not going to be lounging on a terrace in the town square eating a baguette and wearing a striped shirt but you can do anything else.

Fewer people want to go out and dress slutty when it's cold

I went to Portugal during the winter.

It was nice.

Be careful with the Airbnbs. I was there in September and a host sent a scam request for $473 to fix a broken shower rod. She waited until 2 weeks after our trip so we couldn't leave a bad review. We're obviously not paying it, but the Airbnb scams are really bad right now because tourism is way, way down in Paris this year and hosts are struggling. I'd HIGHLY recommend a hotel.

Dresden's Christmas Market

I am planning to travel to Zagreb to celebrate New Year's Eve from Dec 28th to Jan 2nd. They are voted the best Christmas/Winter city for several years apparently. Everything I read so far about them is really positive but I am not really sure it is better than Slovenia or Austria. I am split between the 3. My first choice is Slovenia but it isn't rated highly by anyone. Vienna is 3x as expensive even 30 min outside the city. Zagreb is shilled hard and won some acclaims. Or is there any other cities I should consider? No Munich, Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam or Riga since I already visited them. Krakow is also a no for me.

I hope this thread is still alive. I am not used to /trv/
