What is the best way to get cell phone service without getting jewed? The kikes with my carrier charge $15/day for an international pass which works out to $450/mo. Any cheaper options?

What? Read the fine print dude. Those plans usually cap out at 10 days worth of charge and you get the rest of the month without paying anymore. My ATT international plan is $10 a day and caps out at $100 per month. It’s worth it in my opinion because it just works as soon as you land, people back home can get ahold of you, all the 2FA stuff tied to my phone works, and I don’t got to muck about with getting a local SIM.

Google Fi for voice/text it's 20/mo for the basic plan that works overseas
Ubigi monthly plan for everything, I pay 35/mo for 25GB of 5G data doesn't matter what country I am in Korea, Malaysia, PH, all works

I use Airalo global max data/calls plan, it's like $80 for a package of $20gb and 200 calls/texts good or 1 year. It's not cheap compared to local sims, but is much cheaper than GoogleFi or US roaming charges and works wherever I go.

They don't, but most places outside the US use whatsapp for everything anyways. If you need to make actual local calls/texts you need to get a local sim

Some people are so phone addicted that the idea of going a few hours or days without cell service after landing in a new country induces a nervous meltdown.

Get one of those little druggie baggies to keep your SIM cards from various countries. Sometimes SIMs stay valid for years, other times they become worthless after a few months of inactivity.

Real answer is just upgrade to an e-sim if you haven't already. Ubigi and other providers can provide traveling e-sims.

Problem is that flight delays happen meaning you can get to a place without any way to buy a sim and the only way to get a cab on airport wifi is a one way shot to a hotel if late. The worst offender is europe who has so many ApartHotels around listed like real hotels, then you get there and without a data plan you are straight up boned. Especially in Scandinavia if you're outside like Helsinki or Stockholm or Oslo.

This goes without saying a fair number of places in SEA have gone full QR code ways of pay or smartphone based check in. Good luck figuring that one out.

Calling a WhatsAss number to check in (which requires data) was the most common requirement I encountered in Malaysia...in fact, I encountered it as soon as I entered the country and walked to my first lodgings. Some neighbor lady gave her phone to one of the kids who was following me, who then gave it to me. This was in Rantau Panjang, a town that very few foreigners choose to stop in on their way across the Thai - Malaysia border. Personally I liked it better than Sungai Kolok. People were so much friendlier. A local shop sold me a cell phone SIM and plan for 30 ringgit. Passport required for the registration.

I would caution if you use Google Fi for extended periods overseas. It requires usage in the US a certain amount of time before they honor roaming periods, and they will also deactivate the data portion of the plan after being international for more than 3 months.

I pay $35 a month for Verizon (x4 lines) and get unlimited talk, text, as well as 15 gb of high speed international data before slowing. I have used it for over a year internationally with no issues from Verizon.

Having a US number is nice, but I will caution you can only activate a new phone on US soil so you will have to return even if you have a physical sim.

Depends on how long you are spending and how much hassle you want to go through.
eSim is the easiest by far but costs more. Had a guy on a tour bus with me saying he kept losing connection in random spots of Hanoi (Vietnam). I bought local at the airport (yes swindled a little) but it was still way cheaper than eSim and coverage / data has been great for $0.50c AUD a day.
Personally I buy local and my phone supports 2 SIM cards, so my main Australian one is in the second slot for any 2FA codes. RCS and internet calling also works on it. Just no data without purchasing roaming.
Others here have recommended Ubigi. No idea on if it's any good but looking at prices, you want at least 20gb for the month (I have used about 700mb a day), so about $50USD.
