I would caution if you use Google Fi for extended periods overseas. It requires usage in the US a certain amount of time before they honor roaming periods, and they will also deactivate the data portion of the plan after being international for more than 3 months.
I pay $35 a month for Verizon (x4 lines) and get unlimited talk, text, as well as 15 gb of high speed international data before slowing. I have used it for over a year internationally with no issues from Verizon.
Having a US number is nice, but I will caution you can only activate a new phone on US soil so you will have to return even if you have a physical sim.
