ーJR Passー
Since JR has adjusted the prices for the pass, not really worth it anymore, unless you want to travel by train very extensively. You can plug in your itinerary in the links below and compare prices to the JR Pass.

With the increased price of the JR Pass, local train passes might be good deals now.

I was in Saitama in the peak of summer this year. It was 38C and was probably the first time I thought I would die of heatstroke. Granted I was in Washinomiya and there was no shade anywhere, some guy outside a konbini asked if I was okay because I was drenched in sweat.
As long as you're not a fat fuck, stay hydrated, and can find some shade you will be fine though. Just don't be a retard like me and pick areas with lots of shade and konbini around to cool down in.

Me and gf went to a v small gyoza place near Kanda Station. We were eating and another white couple sat next to us. They were the loudest people I've heard in a while. They were so enthusiastic about everything and bellowed out to the staff in English (none could understand). This couple kept talking to us so we politely but quietly humoured them. I think the guy was mentally slow because he kept asking how we found the restaurant. I told him I just went on Google maps and searched for gyoza. He genuinely thought that was impressive. Then he kept ordering us and the staff drinks. Funnily enough when I got the bill, we weren't charged for the 4 drinks he ordered for us.

Not to be all 'I'm not like other white people in Japan' about this, but I felt ashamed that the locals were staring at us because of this couple.

I really missed my opportunity not studying my ass off in japanese for the last 8 months before coming here. Trying to meet people is basically impossible if you don't have a conversational level. I'm not in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto so it's probably harder in certain ways. I do not want to join an anglosphere but at the same time my nipponese is too broken to join some other type of group to socialize. I don't like bringing this angle up but I'm 6ft, white, athletic, and generally think I look approachable.

I'm probably bringing myself bad karma by venting here but man I just want to meet people, either girls or guys. I don't know how the reality of it would be, but it seems like such an ideal situation to meet a girl and just have constant immersion of the language in the sense (and naturally too). In the US, I have friends/had gfs and also had no problem spending time alone and working on my hobbies or improving myself. However, I feel like this is a special opportunity and I'm blowing the start of it by not making connections.I do take classes here but during long weekends like we just, it's been 3 days of basically nothingness. I get outside and do huge walks around the city but it's not like spontaneous things happen. Maybe 20 years ago it would have but yeah.

Sorry for blog. I don't want to vent to plebbit and I have no other community to fall to. I'm here for the next couple months and I guess I just gotta bunker down and studying as much as I can between class and my freetime.

I'm not really using it to make conversation but man, I'm surprised how many Japanese even in Tokyo can't speak English. Being able to ask for directions, paying at restaurants, ordering food, asking simple stuff to people (like for example, I asked someone why there were so many cosplayers that day). This stuff is really great, it allows me a degree of freedom and ease of mind that I would not otherwise have. I'm AT MOST very low N4, realistically N5, so it's not like my Japanese is advanced, but putting in a bit of effort pays off tremendously every day of my trip.

Even with conversational japanese it's hard as fuck making real connections here. Small talk, discussions about everything and nothing, sure, but making friends is hard and takes time, like everywhere else.

Been here for one month, got some connections but no real friends yet, except maybe this girl I might have a crush on, which makes me want to km and wish I was emotionless like several years ago. It is what is it.

Are foreigners welcome in bars? Last time i went i didnt go in a single bar... i just walked around drinking (in the designated drinking spots/smoking shelters) those little flask sized glass bottles of suntory that were at assorted kombinis.

I always felt like bars and restaurants were a bit "intimidating" to just try walk into, especially all those places that are "upstairs" and you see all the signs for the place and have no clue what's on the menu or how much it costs and don't want to awkwardly walk in and then feel obligated to get something even if you dont like what you see because it would be rude to just leave?

I did eat out a lot, but 100% ground level places (or inside malls) where i could see a menu from outside and know what i was gettin into. Mostly ramen joints (where you get the ticket from the machine) sushi, and tendon tenya and coco curry are amazing to sober and rest up a bit before more walking and drinking.

Think the only proper bar i went to was some izakaya on the night i landed, and then hub later on; and frankly idk if id even consider those "bars", like if someone said they visited america and had a beer with their meal at chilis

Why not join a small tour group? They will bring you to izakaya and bars that aren't on Google Maps (so less foreigners visit them) and even there you will see Japanese people don't react negatively to you (or at all). Some will even approach you, especially in Kansai. But yes you can definitely walk into bars. Some will apparently tell you it's "members only" (no gaijin) but I haven't encountered this. It can feel awkward when you go into those tiny hole in the wall places but it's such a different experience it's worth the initial awkwardness. It won't kill you to buy a sake or nama to be polite.

It's really more of the language barrier that worries me, i hang out at bars alone or with buddies, or strike up conversations with people there; but this is in america or parts of europe with english speakers

I also have a similar avoidance of going into restaurants even where i live unless they have a menu outside, i dont wanna go in to see a menu, see nothing i want, and then walk out awkwardly; and this is when i can read the menu

Eh, maybe i should just memorize some phrases to walk into a place and order a highball or beer and just give it a shot.

How far in advance do you need to set up those tour things? Are they expensive? Ive never done guided tours in my life and always thought them more to be for old people

I've done it lads, I got my leave approved at work earlier today, and just bought the tickets. I'm going to Japan for 16 days and 15 nights in Feburary. Can't wait to go back.

Tell me about Osaka, what's the appeal? I've never been there.

Last time I was in japan I spent most of it in Tokyo and Sendai, this time I'm planning on visiting Sapporo for a few days, and probably bracketing that with staying in Tokyo (where I'm landing and taking off from anyways) but then I remember I've heard about Osaka, and then see that it's like a 2.5hr ride from Osaka to Tokyo, so I could 100% do some kind of FLY IN: X nights in Tokyo, train to Sapporo spend Y nights, train to osaka for the last Z nights type, and on the final day hop on the bullet train in the morning and go to Tokyo, and take the narita express to the airport, which combined is all like a <4hr deal and my departure flight is at like 6pm.

Also would you say it would be important to get a rental car for Sapporo/Hokkaido? To see the naturey and old timey stuff? or is there sufficient trains to get to most nearby things worth seeing.

The amount of people I've witness get molested and felt up on the streets of tokyo is disturbing. This is at night mind you. I would never take my girlfriend to this city. I don't know if Japanese men think they are clever but it's so painfully obvious how so many of them purposefully walk into women and then grab their tits or such as if they accidentally did it. I don't understand how japanese girls put up with this.

>How far in advance do you need to set up those tour things?
I booked most of mine the morning of, although they can be fully booked. October is not the high season so it's easier. Try Get your guide.

>Are they expensive?
I spent around £20-£100 depending on duration and whether food and drinks are included

>Ive never done guided tours in my life and always thought them more to be for old people
The ones where you drive around on a coach all day sometimes have older people and people who don't give a shit about the tour and will talk over the guide, push to the front of the queue for photos, etc. but the food & drink tours I've been on were usually more 30s-40s travellers. Still some older people but they're usually nice. One of my tour guides told me small group, walking tours and tours that you book on the day or just a few days in advance tend to draw a younger and more fun crowd.

>language barrier
It's definitely a better experience if you speak some Japanese. They love it and start gassing you up. You can reach "adorable tourist making an effort" level in 6 months of focused work (about an hour a day). From what I've heard once you get much beyond this level the response declines as you get into "potential immigrant" territory.

I've been using a Wise card on my last few trips. You can essentially lock in the exchange rate whenever you feel like it's high and it's relatively easy to exchange back to your original currency afterwards if you have any leftover. Whenever I needed cash I could just go to any conbini and use their ATM, though they limit you to around 30k yen / day which is way more than enough for me. I exchanged quite a bit when it was around 1usd:160jpy and the transfer / ATM withdrawal fees are quite minimal compared exchange stations. If you have a card that has ATM fee reimbursement, it may be more convenient, but then you're subject to whatever the exchange rate is at the time (which may be good or bad.)

If you've already experience the shinkansen, and even if you haven't, I would recommend flying to Sapporo instead of train. It's both faster and cheaper and you can always just shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka if you really want to ride one.

I took a similar trip showing my friend around this recent February coming from Tokyo fly to Sapporo fly to Osaka and shinkansen back to Tokyo. Within Sapporo and most of the western side of Hokkaido you don't need a car. If you're trying to get to certain points in the center or far east sides of Hokkaido you would probably want a car, but I sure hope you're accustomed to driving in the snow.

If you're going for the Sapporo snow festival and have an interest in Miku, the Snow Miku festival happens usually around the same time in Otaru which is a nice day trip out of Sapporo. She, alongside her pet rabbit, are the official tourism ambassadors of Sapporo and I got to shake her hand and receive her business card.

Ah, quite interesting, when you put it that way I see what you mean. I always just really hated the whole airport rigamarole, so would try to spend as little time in airports as possible, also tighter layovers are a major liability for missed connections in the event of delays.

But if you're actually wherever for long enough to hop out and explore, that's pretty cool. I had been on Tokyo layovers multiple times a decade before I had even actually gone to japan for a trip and stepped out of the airport. Similarly with Taipei, except I've never actually been outside of the airport, and would like to visit Taiwan someday.

I'll keep what you said in mind for the future, I already booked tickets for my trip, but maybe my next trip I could do a 2-3day layover somewhere interesting on the way.

Anyone experienced and knowledgeable about Hokkaido? I'm planning on spending say 3 nights there (the last 3 days of the snow festival; can't really go much earlier, landing in tokyo late, hit an izakaya, walk around, go to bed, spend two days recovering from jetlag and very relaxedly hitting up some old favorites (Yushukan, Nakano Broadway, Akihabara), then the next morning hopping on a plane (rather than train) to sapporo per some research after >>2837599's recommendation. I should be on Hokkaido by Monday afternoon on Feb9

This is where the bulk of my questions lay;

My vague idea right now is land at the Sapporo airport and rent a car. How snowy/icy does it get in hokkaido in feburary? I live in a snowy/icy area, but I also drive a truck, a brief look at the https://rent.toyota.co.jp/ site for sapporo did not show any tacomas which is what I would have picked if I needed a toyota for a snowy/icy area (don't own one myself, but many friends/coworkers do and swear by it, and I've driven em before).

Are the roads pretty clean and maintained and I should be fine with whatever? (cheapest option probably)
Or if not, I don't know a damn thing about non pickup toyotas, what would (You) pick based on their available roster that would be safe for the road conditions in Hokkaido in Feburary?

And as far as lodging is concerned, my general idea is to stay somewhere both "near a subway station" and "on the outskirts of the city" so I can easily hop on a subway and go into the city, OR drive out into the countryside to see nature stuff, and overall not having to deal with deep urban heavy traffic and tight lanes etc... Does such a place exist? Or am I being too picky? I could 100% buy either the "fuck renting a car, just stay in the city and take trains and busses/ubers" or "fuck the city, stay in this bumfuck town, and drive everywhere, here's a cool trick for free parking near a station if you really need to go" argument with supporting anecdotes

reminds me of my first time in japan, especially first day jetlag waking up early, was such a surreal feeling with how empty things feel. But like the other guy said; you just gotta adjust your schedule. And if you're generally an "early riser", try to set up your travel first thing in the morning, so by the time you get where you're going after a couple trains, things will be open.

I actually was very excited for Japanese food, it all looked a lot more appetizing than it really is. Everything seems to lack condiments, even their french fries don't have much salt in them. Plus everywhere you go, there's this nauseatingly sweet smell in the air. I acknowledge fully that I'm a picky eater but I think it isn't unreasonable to say that the Japanese don't go too crazy with their food. Hamburgers for example really could use having some form of cheese filling by default. Miso soup does not need to come with every meal, and the rice, at least give me a salt packet...

I'm going to japan in may next year, my goal is to avoid white people and do my best impression of not existing.
the only way I'll interact with any white person is if they identify themselves as from the potomac area or north east because at least I can be reasonably certain that they're not going to behave like a fucking idiot

I live near DC and my one greatest fear is going to japan and coming across like one of the many fucking chinese/german/middle eastern tourists that I accidentally come into contact with
