>Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up, she was shitting brown water. The more she drank the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew.
why did they cut important moments from the books?

To any book readers. When they trapped one of her handmaidens in the safe along with the nigger, did they expand on it a bit more?
Maybe the nigger strangled the girl so he can have a food supply or maybe they both slowly died.

The handmaiden in question died in the desert and was a very loyal friend. Dany made everyone stop to bury her. There was no nigger in Qarth, his book equivalent got spurned by Dany, is still alive, and is sending ships to fight against her in Meereen because she's fucking up his slave business.

Really, it would be nice if there was an author that did setting specific stories with a lot of rape.
Like there would be a little bit of an overarching story but there would be at least one rape every 12 pages or so.
He could do cyberpunk, fantasy, noir, space opera, post apocalypse, word war 2, and there would be a story but there would be a lot of rape but they never adress it in the amazon page or the book cover or the goodreads reviews. They would jusy talk about knight x and detective y and the tax policies in the review and it would be just an open secret shared among private conversations that the book is a goldmine for rape.

Reminder that you never read those books. The chapter goes on for two pages after that and this is how it ends:
>As the western sky turned the color of a blood bruise, she heard the sound of approaching horses. Dany rose, wiped her hands on her ragged undertunic, and went to stand beside her dragon. That was how Khal Jhaqo found her, when half a hundred mounted warriors emerged from the drifting smoke.

Oh fuck, just realised that this makes it sound like she was wiping her shit-stained hands lmao. Here's missing context:
>The carcass was too heavy for him to bear back to his lair, so Drogon consumed his kill there, tearing at the charred flesh as the grasses burned around them, the air thick with drifting smoke and the smell of burnt horsehair. Dany, starved, slid off his back and ate with him, ripping chunks of smoking meat from the dead horse with bare, burned hands. In Meereen I was a queen in silk, nibbling on stuffed dates and honeyed lamb, she remembered. What would my noble husband think if he could see me now? Hizdahr would be horrified, no doubt. But Daario ... Daario would laugh, carve off a hunk of horsemeat with his arakh, and squat down to eat beside her.

the Qarth storyline was heavily rewritten in the books, probably the most edited (finished) plot out of any of the books. Doreah died of a fever before they got to Qarth and stayed loyal to the end. Xaro and the Warlocks both wanted Dany's dragons but they weren't working together, the Warlocks stole Drogon outright but Xaro planned to trick Dany into marrying him and then claiming her dragons as a dowry (which wouldn't have worked, as we saw later in Astapor, but neither him nor Dany knew that and she ran away rather than find out). The coup shit never happens at all and when Dany realizes what's happening she just fucks off instead of killing Xaro. By the end of the books he's still alive and sending envoys to Meereen to try and talk her out of her anti-slavery crusade before the Yunkai'i attack the city in force

When the guys captured her in the books, did one of them step on the pile of turds hidden in the grass?
That would be a great chance for grrrm to describe damny's stale cold feces breaking apart and spilling their moist insides through the straps of the poor guy's sandals and into his sole.
They would wonder if the horse shat before it died because the turds were so big and smelly and Danny would try to keep the lie going and nod along.
Then they would ride with danny on horseback but the poor guy has a sandal full of her nasty turds (it even has some worms in there) and he would try to keep a straight face but it would just be so stinky and human like so he'd try to restart the conversation and Danny would try to gaslight everyone into thinking they agreed it was horse turds.

>The black teeth closed inches from her face. He meant to tear my head off. The sand was in her eyes. She stumbled over the pitmaster’s corpse and fell on her backside.
Drogon roared. The sound filled the pit. A furnace wind engulfed her. The dragon’s long scaled neck stretched toward her. When his mouth opened, she could see bits of broken bone and charred flesh between his black teeth. His eyes were molten. I am looking into hell, but I dare not look away.
>She had never been so certain of anything. If I run from him, he will burn me and devour me. In Westeros the septons spoke of seven hells and seven heavens, but the Seven Kingdoms and their gods were far away. If she died here, Dany wondered, would the horse god of the Doth raki part the grass and claim her for his starry khalasar, so she might ride the nightlands beside her sun-and-stars? Or would the angry gods of Ghis send their harpies to seize her soul and drag her down to torment? Drogon roared full in her face, his breath hot enough to blister skin. Off to her right Dany heard Barristan Selmy shouting, “Me! Try me. Over here. Me!”
>In the smoldering red pits of Drogon’s eyes, Dany saw her own reflection. How small she looked, how weak and frail and scared. I cannot let him see my fear. She scrabbled in the sand, pushing against the pitmaster’s corpse, and her fingers brushed against the handle of his whip. Touching it made her feel braver. The leather was warm, alive. Drogon roared again, the sound so loud that she almost dropped the whip. His teeth snapped at her.

Dany hit him. “No,” she screamed, swinging the lash with all the strength that she had in her. The dragon jerked his head back. “No,” she screamed again. “NO!” The barbs raked along his snout. Drogon rose, his wings covering her in shadow. Dany swung the lash at his scaled belly, back and forth until her arm began to ache. His long serpentine neck bent like an archer’s bow. With a hisssssss, he spat black fire down at her. Dany darted underneath the flames, swinging the whip and shouting, “No, no, no. Get DOWN!”
>His answering roar was full of fear and fury, full of pain. His wings beat once, twice ...
>... and folded. The dragon gave one last hiss and stretched out flat upon his belly. Black blood was flowing from the wound where the spear had pierced him, smoking where it dripped onto the scorched sands. He is fire made flesh, she thought, and so am I.
>Daenerys Targaryen vaulted onto the dragon’s back, seized the spear, and ripped it out. The point was half-melted, the iron red-hot, glowing. She flung it aside. Drogon twisted under her, his muscles rippling as he gathered his strength. The air was thick with sand. Dany could not see, she could not breathe, she could not think. The black wings cracked like thunder, and suddenly the scarlet sands were falling away beneath her.
>Dizzy, Dany closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she glimpsed the Meereenese beneath her through a haze of tears and dust, pouring up the steps and out into the streets.
>The lash was still in her hand. She flicked it against Drogon’s neck and cried, “Higher!” Her other hand clutched at his scales, her fingers scrabbling for purchase. Drogon’s wide black wings beat the air. Dany could feel the heat of him between her thighs. Her heart felt as if it were about to burst. Yes, she thought, yes, now, now, do it, do it, take me, take me, FLY!
Kino.

>Arya's have so much repetition
You mean the kill list or the travelogue chapters and warcrimes descriptions?
Jaime's become literally the same, he's thinking about Lancel and Moonboy and Cersei
Nah Jaime's ̶I̶n̶c̶e̶l̶ self-discovery arc is kino and every chapter progresses something or is at least comfy. The real repetitive shit is in the Brienne chapters and Tyrion's and Dany's in ADWD.

And even that was full of retarded writing and unnecessary filler. Dunno why they didn't finish off her season 5 plot with her facing down dothraki khalasar with Drogon by her side and spare us the cheesy rapist khals plot. They had to give Jorah and Daario something to do i guess or maybe they just didn't want to give anyone in season 5 a feels-good ending.

ADWD is a literal war crime against the pacing itself. Think how many Tyrion chapters are spent painstakingly recapping his every step in Essos, how much of Daenerys' and Jon's stories feels just copy-and-pasted and how little we get for the actually intriguing theaters like King's Landing or Jaime, Brienne and Lady Stoneheart in Riverlands or Bran's cool as shit time travel warging and then realise that we missed out on the conclusions to the main battles because of all that tedium AND that the books not being finished gave D&D free reign to shit all over the final seasons.

I read LotR and I can assure you, no line is as bad as "Sunset found her squatting etc.".
If I could describe Tolkien's work in one word it would be "idealistic". GRRM's work reads to me like a purely hedonistic man who cares for nothing but getting the next high. He's a deeply vulgar man who believes in nothing except his own pleasure.

On the one hand, the charm of ASOIF/GOT has always the deconstructive elements about the medieval setting so a realistic description of a cute girl experiencing the runs would be worth writing.
On the other hand, nobody ever quotes other lines from the book that are this descriptive about other nasty topics.

I can easily nitpick LoTR as well, literally half of ROTK is unrelenting darkness and dreariness and the Scouring of Shire is a tacked on pseudo-realistic filler that ends with a decrepit old man getting his throat slit. And in Martin's books you can find warmth and beauty everywhere, even in tragic scenes. And at the end of the day both Tolkien and Martin are literary geniuses that won't be surpassed for a long time.

Don't you dare putting that smut peddler on the same level as Tolkien.
In the same way Tolkien created beauty, GRRM created vulgarity for the sake of supposed "realism". They are completely polar opposites in that regard. However, only one of them created something that endured for more than half a century.

Nigger, Martin's vulgarity serves a purpose and there's plenty of beautiful descriptions and statements about human nature to go around. "Then Lord Eddard is a man in ten thousand. Most of us are not so strong. What is honor compared to a woman's love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms . . . or the memory of a brother's smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy", "A craven can be as brave as any man, when there is nothing to fear. And we all do our duty, when there is no cost to it. How easy it seems then, to walk the path of honor. Yet soon or late in every man's life comes a day when it is not easy, a day when he must choose", you think Tolkien wouldn't have loved that shit?

>"Our knees do not bend easily," said Ser Arthur Dayne.
>"Ser Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him."
>"Ser Willem is a good man and true," said Ser Oswell.
>"But not of the Kingsguard," Ser Gerold pointed out. "The Kingsguard does not flee."
>"Then or now," said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
>"We swore a vow," explained old Ser Gerold.
>Ned's wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three.
>"And now it begins," said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.
>"No," Ned said with sadness in his voice. "Now it ends." As they came together in a rush of steel and shadow, he could hear Lyanna screaming. "Eddard!" she called. A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death.
>"Lord Eddard," Lyanna called again. "I promise," he whispered. "Lyanna, I promise..."
What an edgy passage, clearly included for nothing more than shock value.

Why did they make nonsensical changes like turning the Thenns into cannibals instead of them being the only wildlings to have a proper kingdom with aristocracy you can wed into Northern houses and the ability to forge new weapons, but still having them be the only wildlings that have distinct and shiny new weapons?

What part of being the most uncivilised tribe that everyone else hates and fears gave them the magic ability to make new metal weapons instead of having to rely on rusty old Night's Watch pieces and neolithic shit like bows and spears?

Magnar of Thenn was pretty bloodthirsty in the books. But the cannibalism thing seems to have came from some other tribe. Anyway, Jon's season 5 arc felt so hollow without those complexities, without marriages between northerners and the free folk, without tensions between queen's men and the wildlings, without Jon making hard decisions and then breaking his vows. But we for sure got ourselves a lot of fucking Ollie reaction shots, didn't we?

I'm still not ruling out him pulling an epic twist with Jon's parentage, revealing that he's actually not a secret targ, the obvious thing, but the secret incest-baby of Benjen and Lyanna, them having the same kind of thing going on as Jon and Arya. Benjen was sent to the wall because of it and Lyanna ran away with the Targ to have her baby in safety, with the Targ knowing it was part of some ancient prophecy. That's why Benjen takes such an interest in Jon.

Imagine The Long Night stuff if handled correctly. All of these different forces stuck in the same castle while winter closes in. The Dothraki being fucking pissed because they're cold and just want to go home, they can't ride anywhere because the snow is too deep so all they're good for is shooting their bows from the parapets, and their horses are being slaughtered to feed the Northerners and Stannis' Southron army. Those two have reservations against each other because the North wants to be free, but they're both sick of having to live with Wildlings and Essos barbarians, not to mention cockless automatons that creep out the Northerners, Southrons and wildlings. Jon, Dany, Mance Rayder and Stannis are spending most of their energy just trying to keep their forces from killing each other in petty squabbles before the army of the undead even arrives, and then the siege begins.

Daenerys' arc takes the crown dor simplification. There's only evil Harpies and uncomplicated tyrant queen and her lackeys. And nothing she does can improve the situation for the better which makes the entire thing even more absurd and pointless than in the books. The whole entire arena suddenly being swarmed with Harpies was the funniest shit, especially with the spooky music added on top. Apparently they wanted nothing more than to slaughter freedmen and even threw themselves in the jaws of the dragon for it. And then Daenerys fucks off and leaves her followers surrounded by hundreds of enemies.

What strikes me is how downright cruel they've made her. She never fed slavers to the dragons in the books, she never threatened Hizdar into marrying her while mocking his father's death and she never executed a freedman for killing a master. Yet Cersei is free from all villainy in the show and only has Margaery arrested to protect Tommen while her book self gleefully self-destructs while committing horrifying atrocities along the way. They gave Cersei story to Daenerys, put simply.

>“Are you a good man, Davos Seaworth?” she asked.

Aye, I’ve broken laws, but I never felt evil until tonight. I would say my parts are mixed, m’lady. Good and bad.” “A grey man,” she said. “Neither white nor black, but partaking of both. Is that what you are, Ser Davos?” “What if I am? It seems to me that most men are grey.” “If half of an onion is black with rot, it is a rotten onion. A man is good, or he is evil.”

They started out condensed into one book. His editor/publisher made him split it up into two parts so that they'd have something to publish after five years of waiting after The Red Wedding bombshell, leaving him free to keep trying to fix the problem with Dany in Dance.

What he needs to do is simply do a timeskip. That's the problem he's had from the start, when he decided not to do a timeskip and to instead write more. Now he's writing more and more POVs to try and make the timelines of all the POVs match up because he refuses to just skip ahead or have characters teleport between Westeros and Essos, so more POVs are needed to spin the wheels for a few months while Dany's position in Essos becomes untenable AND the character delivering her ships to get to Wessos is sailing over there.

It would be a bit unrealistic if nothing happens over the course of five years. Some POVs immediately following after A Storm was kino too. Perhaps he should've released the Feast-Dance with the timeskip intact, finish Winds and ADOS and then release the version without timeskip or at least some chapters.

Nah. He should have timeskipped most of both and only given us flashbacks of them in Winds, which could happen 2-3 years after aSoS and still have featured some of the Feast/Dance new PoVs like Victarion. The series would be finished by now with some post-aDoS book.

It'd spare us some of the most boring Arya and Dany chapters while still making it feasibly to cover the interesting stuff like Stannis vs Boltons in Winds.

I don't disagree that they went full retard with having her remain queen with no claim to the throne and no one trying to unseat her, or the commoners trying to kill her for murdering the High Sparrow, but I wouldn't call that whitewashing or her being free from villainy. They kept her a villain, they just didn't want to get rid of her because they had too much fun watching Lena drink wine and do horrible things, even if that made no sense for the politics of the show.

You can easily put Reek/Theon's and the later Cersei chapters in a theorical timeskipped Winds just fine. They'd just be happening later in the timeline, which makes sense. And you could still get the highlights of the Ironborn chapters in flashback form or just in interactions while the characters are doing other stuff like raiding Old Town.

Brienne could be doing something more interesting like trying to rescue "Arya" from the Boltons which could force her to help Stannis somewhat.

Jaime chapters would be the real loss, since Lannisters taking 3 years to pacify the Riverlands wouldnt make much sense and what he'd be realistically doing after 3 years (fighting fAegon, Ironborn or the Faith Militia) wouldnt be similar at all to bring out the same character moments.

Well we saw how that turned out in the show, didn't we. Jk but seriously, did they really have to disregard her entire Feast arc and make her stand outside Winterfell for what felt like eternity only to fuck off and pursue her selfish revenge at the end?

Because every character in asoiaf is pretty much clearly good or clearly bad. It's Harry Potter tier with the houses.

Not really. Jaime is as grey as they come. Pretty much every character has his inner turmoil and his good and bad sides (except Areo, he has no character and Joffrey/Mountain/Ramsay/Euron for obvious reasons).

The show just wrote the plot as stupidly as possible. What I'd do is have Brienne approach Manderly and befriend a hiding Davos unknowingly then end up fighting on Stannis' side by accident. I think that'd fit the character better. You could still have some of the book moments while she travels to White Harbor.

The show's final seasons are just rushed and basically fanfiction by overconfident writers who didnt understand what worked about early seasons and just wanted to go to work on other properties with their newfound fame.

That one chapter where we see his crew at an inn kind of gave me the vibe that he doesn't do that much raping himself, because the constant headache just makes it a chore when all he wants is some more milk of the poppy and liquor to try and black out. So instead he has his men rape anyone he thinks needs raped while he finds a quiet dark corner.

At least Jaime's arc has some sort of a payoff. When Cersei asks for him to save her after she gets arrested, he just burns the letter and goes to help Brienne instead. This is the culmination of him finally being free of her influence and manipulation.
I also like how he's trying to bond with his kids. It's a pity he's gonna see the two left die.

Jaime also has some poetic lines, like when he tells Brienne the story of why he killed Aerys. You can feel how broken he is and why he's the man he is. Until that, you think he's just some awful man who's fucking his sister because he's a pervert. But his chapters explain he was a kid full of hopes and dreams of being a gallant knight and then he was sent to protect a crazy king who raped his wife and wanted to kill them all out of spite and that destroyed him. His dream of Rhaegar and the Kingsguard of Aerys visiting him in a dream is pure fantasy.
Connington has similar lines. He's a romantic character who really loved Rhaegar and loves his "son" as his own.

That's a really bad example, since Rowling put less thought into entire books than GRRM has done for single character arcs. Every book had her just making things up that she didn't think of for the last book, making everything a mess by the end. Like how the spell to hide a house requires Harry's family to trust an outsider, but then in the later books Ron's brother is his own secret keeper for their cottage so apparently Harry's dad and Dumbledore and all the rest were just fucking retards for not just making Harry's dad the secret keeper.

There's plenty of good writers who have put out much better books than GRRM in that timespan, no need to go to a terrible writer that pumped out material because there was almost zero planning involved as she vomited out a mix of stuff she'd gotten from other writers. Stephen King isn't the greatest writer in the world either, but he's better than Rowling and writes a lot of door-stoppers, so it's funny to know that he's released over thirty goddamn books since 1996. Not counting all his work on shows and movie adaptations and short stories and stuff, which he has probably also done more work on than GRRM's lazy ass.

If you want to be fair just compare pre-2000 era Gurm with post-2000 era Gurm it's night and day in terms of production.

Most people focus on the "JUST WRITE, GEORGE, STOP BEING LAZY AND WRITE MORE!!" line of thinking but I think he's actually still writing a lot to try and dig himself out of the hole he's made, he just can't get any of it to meld. So he's inventing new shit to stick in there, causing more and more bloated books and entire chapters that he then decides to cut after spending days or weeks on them. Making him FEEL like he's being productive because he's writing for an hour every day, but ultimately it's a huge waste of effort and there's no one around to tell him to just fucking stop writing new shit and release what he's got even though it's "not good enough".

That's also why he doesn't have any trouble cranking out short stories or entire books in other settings. He probably does those to give himself time off from WoW, thinking it'll give him the inspiration he needs to fix the problems he can't figure out. But of course it doesn't.

He can write as much as he wants, but he can't get anywhere because he's had no idea where the plot should go in the last 25 years. That's why his last two books written in the last quarter century have basically been timewasters where the plot went no where. He was buying for time to think of a resolution and even with multiple decades STILL has no ideas.

He simply has nothing, there's no cure for this level of writers block. The best he can do is dabble in side plots, coming up with other characters that never existed prior to Storm of Swords (see Griff), but that doesn't help resolve the main plot.

Nah man. He's always known the ending he's working towards. The ending where Dany ends up burning King's Landing and Jon fucks off back North. He's been clear about knowing his ending from the very beginning. The problem is that originally he planned for a timeskip where a bunch of shit would have happened, but he took that out. Taking that out meant he had to write a bunch of more stuff to happen for the years to pass, and even more stuff to happen while other characters are just travelling because he's too autistic to just have people teleport around his retardedly huge maps, so a ship can't just go from one place to another between chapters and fuck the timelines up and you can't just have a month where everyone's travelling and nothing happens.

Right now, and for a long time, he's been stuck with the "mereneese knot" of not knowing how the fuck he's actually going to get Dany to Westeros for the ending without it looking like an asspull or out of character moment after he's spent so much time building up her connection with the cities and people she's trying to save. Since he's been so slow to figure that shit out he's kept spinning the wheels making up new characters to pass the time, so Dany can slowly become disillusioned with the whole thing and enough time for someone can show up with ships to take her and her hordes to the west.

It's not a problem of him not knowing where the plot is going, it's him overthinking the whole thing and piling on more and more shitty ancillary POVs to try and dig himself out of a problem that could be solved at any point by a timeskip or random comet just wiping out the city while Dany's busy shitting her guts out.

Beric isn't even a POV character and his story, along with Catelyn, is all about how they're LESSENED by being brought back to life. Not just "changed" like Gandalf but actively lesser. Catelyn is a walking corpse that only thinks of killing Freys for fuck's sake. Clegane is a mute zombie, nothing but a walking set of armour that's less useful than he was as a man.

Jon Snow is going to be the only character that might come back without losing any of himself because of warging and becoming an undead thing like Coldhands that can better fight The Others. But that's still a sacrifice because he won't be able to leave the cold North afterwards without rotting.

GRRM has said he doesn't like Gandalf coming back because he lost nothing from dying, he just came back stronger, and the fellowship got him back right after the part that was required to have Frodo and Sam split off. Surely you see the huge difference in how he handles it? He may have many, many faults, but he's certainly not being a hypocrite in this case.

He had characters move quickly in the first three books. The last two books move the story an inch and turns every character into a meandering introspective travelogue. D&D didnt kill the series, George did with AFFC.

He might have a vague idea of an ending, but he has no idea how to get there. So he wrote filler, alot of it.
>>211367151
Beric is a much more interesting character than Stoneheart. Why George decided to resurrect the annoying asf Catelyn Stark is beyond me.
