He spent most of the decade saying that his favorite Superman story is For Tomorrow where Superman mopes around and gives a confession to a cancer ridden priest cause he feels guilt for the disappearance of a million people. Just straight up navel gazing. with an occasional fist fight.
His vision of the character was more in line with Synder's than he'll admit now that everybody and their mother is bitching about MoS and BvS like they're the worst thing that happened to movies.
It's not his fault 100%. WB/DC had the tradition of sending a box of comics to the actors to prepare for the role. Christian Bale got Batman comics like Year One and Long Halloween.
Cavill got For Tomorrow.
The problem is that DC doesn't exactly send the BEST comics, but rather what the Powers That Be at the moment in time prefer. And usually it's shit they worked on. And the co-president of DC at the time was Jim Lee, the artist on For Tomorrow. So suddenly For Tomorrow is "essential" reading. Cause if they adapt some of it, than Jim gets some sweet royalty money.
Cavill now could've read the book and appraised it as crap, but didn't. He liked it and decided to base his portrayal of Superman on it.
