Some of the greatest contributions to horror have come from filmmakers more concerned with experimenting with language than with creating scares: Hitchcock, Bergman, Fellini, Polanski, Argento, Kubrick, Zulawski, Lynch, Haneke, von Trier.

>>211381084These directors were more interested in using horror as symbolism rather than seeing it as a closed genre with rules to be followed, and they ended up influencing later films, transforming horror cinema.
For example, Hitchcock uses horror to represent repressed sexuality and the devouring mother figure, helping to establish modern psychological suspense. He also introduced Norman Bates as the 'monster' and brought in the concept of 'everyday horror,' where the monster can be anyone โ an idea that would become recurring in slashers years later. Bergman, in Hour of the Wolf (1968), used horror as a way to explore madness, isolation, and guilt, influencing existential, psychological, and metaphysical horror. We also have Argento, whose use of color and sound elevated giallo to a more artistic and symbolic level.
It's possible to trace the symbolic and aesthetic influences of each of these directors to modern horror.
Here's my movie lineup for tomorrow morning:
>Screamboat
>Neverland Nightmare
>Incident At Montauk
Then after that I'll put on some Friday the 13th movies the rest of the day, since PlutoTV has them for free.
>>211381673>not a single mention of language>Argento glazing is purely about visualslol, lmao
>>211381708ChatGPT is right thoughbeit.
>>211381708I've never been interested in studying film language, and I think it's a waste of time (I couldn't care less about a 'beautiful' shot or camera movement), but feel free to share your valuable knowledge
>>211381673>rather than seeing it as a closed genre with rules to be followedWhat makes a lot giallo and Italian horror great is following the rules
>>211381708Argento's got a way more coherent visual language from his use of filters than most people in the era, especially people looking beyond closed genres with rules like Visconti
Giallo has a pulpy literalism that sometimes forces people to make up published works to keep their film in the genre
>>211379817Best creature movie ever.
>>211379846You need to watch it, it's a rare perfect horror film.
>>211373861Probably 5. I've been occasionally-rewatching them in order and that's what I'm up to.
>>211382318>What makes a lot giallo and Italian horror great is following the rulesI found that perspective interesting. I'd need to watch more giallo to better analyze whether the 'rules' are truly followed, since I've only seen some of the most classic ones by the masters Argento, Fulci, and Bava โ and I liked all of them. If you can, recommend me some. These are the ones I remember watching: Phenomena and Suspiria (I guess theyโre not really giallo despite being by Argento), Don't Torture a Duckling (I don't think that qualifies as giallo either, but whatever), The Whip and the Body (kind of a proto-giallo I think), and Profondo Rosso.
I've also seen House by the Cemetery and Four Flies on Grey Velvet, but I don't remember anything about them.
>>211373861>>211382746I might rewatch 3 or 5 if I'm in the mood for a movie tomorrow. I've rewatched 1 and 2 in the past year.
Watched a French cannibal kino called raw. Man I love slutty French hoโs
>>211382796NTA but if you want some "typical" gialli that follow the "rules" I'll rec
>the case of the bloody iris>the strange vice of mrs wardh>eyeball>strip nude for your killerOnly one of these doesn't have Edwige in it lol.
My favourite genre of horror is direct to streaming films where director pretends his favourite 80โs scream queens still look as good as they did 30 years ago
>>211382945"Horror convention" movies, as I once saw these called, are a massive subgenre.
>>211382796There's conventions of the genre that come from the source material, but there are also conventions which come from popular cinema, so which set of rules they're adhering to changes depending on what they thought would be more popular. Things like a black gloved killer's POV or all the women being nudist lesbians that become the main tropes of the genre are both for their pulp appeal, like how pulp genre crime novels also often have lurid or mysterious images on the cover.
Because there's a lot of liberty to choose between doing the book version or the cinematic version, they generally choose whatever is the most lurid. Like its book genre counterpart, realism takes a backseat to shock. That's why you often have total freak side characters with interesting lives, because they're meant to be the movie equivalent of a train station/airport book where everything should be gripping and fast paced and get to a sex scene and/or the seventh body before chapter 23
>>211382796And
>>211382915 has a good list because the one that doesn't have edwige has ines pellegrini
Add Death Walks in High Heels though because it's demented
>>211382915>>211383376Thanks for the recs. These directors knew how to choose their women.
>>211383252Nice insight. You seem well versed in Giallo, Im going to watch lots of them for trying to reach that level.
>>211383797>, Im going to watch lots of them for trying to reach that level.I've watched retirement home levels of murder mysteries, anon, I don't know if it's something to aspire to, but yes, giallo directors knew beautiful women in danger always has mass appeal. There's a great quote from Argento saying he puts beautiful women in his movies because he likes looking at beautiful women, and that's basically the essence of the genre, anything you would rubberneck
>>211375354I have a genuine hatred for "quirky indie film dance" moments.

>>211384730Sounds like things have gone from Ahmedabad to Ahmedaworst.
>>211384730>A member of Viswashkumar's family based in Britainlol
>>211384466Yeah, some of them are classics but how close they stick to the book or title is highly variable in giallo. For example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBQJ1liRfVU
That's Oliver Reed, Richard Attenborough and lots of other stars in an Agatha Christie adaptation where for some reason they are in Iran because giallo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t6kSQ562OQ
^that is a much straighter earlier adaptation
Murder mysteries adapted from Christie all generally take some liberties (so they don't spoil themselves in some cases, to update it, or even to insert some new moral) but giallo is genre that will be like, what it's missing as a story is Iranian architecture.
>>211384969nta, but I fucking love ATTWN (1945). Such a great murder mystery movie, if not the best ever.
>>211385063It's a great era for murder mysteries, that's why a lot of giallo is taking cues directly from noir and mysteries coming out then, and of course later German krimi films
So Long at the Fair (1950) is still my favourite mystery though none of the deaths are murders
>>211384730That reminds me.
More spooky than horror but it's supernatural from the 70's.
What slashers have multiple killers like Corn in a Clownfield?
By that I mean multiple killers that actually work together at the same time onscreen instead of just "separatedly" which is what Scream for example usually goes for
>>211384730What Final Destination tier moments have ever happened to you?
For me it was when I was still a teen, I used to walk home from school every single day, one day I heard a sudden loud noise and stopped, then part of a store's marquee literally came crashing down in front of me, if I hadn't stopped I'd probably be toast

The costuming for the "tribal" colonists was simply great, I thought.
>>211392969>>211392976The plot was pretty much obvious from the get-go, it was just some investigation suspense followed by about an hour of talking and running around aimlessly in the mine town getting spooked or attacked by the tribals over and over.
I didn't really expect anything more from it than that. Frankly I'm glad they didn't have a big in-depth explanation of the concept they already foreshadowed, and just kept it to a brief account.

>>211373959Speaking of Nolan, apparently Inception was supposed to be a horror film originally which I think would've been really interesting to see. What we got instead is a visual spectacle of course but I can't help but wonder 'what if' still. It's a shame Nolan never got around to making one despite obviously being a fan and he's even older now than Kubrick was when he made The Shining. Hopefully Coogler has inspired him to finally take that plunge after The Odyssey.
>>211395264I can't see how inception could be made a horror film. What it'll be like Freddy Krueger? Qrd?
>>211374281First thing came to mind and no I keep hearing it agian.
>>211395264Theres blacks in the Odysee .
>>211395264People always say it's an insight into Nolan that the layers of his mind are city, winter fortress and a beach. And not increasing layers of orgies and descending into bizarre hell dimensions like it likely wild me.
>>211395843*Would be, not wild me...
I watched paranormal activity 1 the other night and paranormal activity 2 tonight. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. PA2 is a little weaker but I like that they're building on the lore. PA3 is the only one I've seen before but it was when it came out and I was a kid so I don't remember anything except that I was scared. I'm looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow.
>>211395277It was originally going to be low budget and much smaller in scale, but it was apparently always going to be a heist film either way. How that would've worked I have no clue and I guess Nolan didn't either. I think Army of the Dead is the only example of a heist horror movie I can think of so it can be done.
>โI originally wrote it as a heist movie, and heist movies traditionally are very deliberately superficial in emotional terms,โ Nolan said. โTheyโre frivolous and glamorous, and thereโs a sort of gloss and fun to it. I originally tried to write it that way, but when I came back to it I realized that -- to me -- that didnโt work for a film that relies so heavily on the idea of the interior state, the idea of dream and memory. I realized I needed to raise the emotional stakes.">โI was thinking along the lines of a horror movie at first, but it eventually became this project. I was looking for a device whereby the dreams would become important to the story, and the thought that someone could invade your dream space and steal an idea is immensely compelling to me. The concept that dreams feel real while weโre in them underlies the whole film.โ>Nolan had initially tried to write Inception as a small, low-budget film but abandoned that idea as he progressed. โItโs intimate and emotional, but I realised I had this concept that lent itself to an epic-scale movie.โ

>>211399432Isn't Punished Snood in Ghostland?
Would you look at that, it's time for another pointless post about my brief thoughts on what I just watched.
>Screamboat
This is dumb as fuck and I can't recommend it. It's not unwatchable by any means, just not good. I'd give a 4/10. Can you watch it? Yes. Should you watch it? Probably not, especially since it's 112 minutes long.
>Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare
The 3rd movie in the TCU and it's actually good. I'd say it's the best of the recent PD character horror movies, although that's not hard to be. The one odd thing is that Tinker Bell is a tranny but played by a woman I honestly couldn't believe it was a good slasher film with Peter being a good villain. I'd recommend it be given a watch.
>Incident At Montaux
FF #191. It's an okay FF conspiracy movie. It's nothing great and will split people. There's not much that happens except a guy going around the woods near a military base. I'd give it a 5-5.5/10, but because it's only 60 minutes long, I'd re commend giving it a watch if you're into FF movies.
>>211400296how do they hold up to slayer man?
better? worse?
>>211400315Neverland Nightmare is much better than Slayer Man IMO. Now, between Screamboat and Slayer Man, that's tough. Both are watchable and dumb as fuck. Slayer Man being shorter by 15 minutes makes it easier to get through, but I think Screamboat has the better kills & villain design. So I'd probably watch Screamboat over Slayer Man if I had to watch either again.

>>211400659I don't think that "woke" is the problem. British guy believing that he's smarter than he actually is and writing some stuff that gets more retarded and nonsensical the more you think about it is.
Black Mirror doesn't really has enough substance to have a message, woke or not. It's very superficial "le modern world and modern technology are le bad" storytelling.
>>211400772any time I make an observation about anything now, no matter how obvious, to a friend or coworker, there's like a 10% chance of "oh yeah there was a Black Mirror episode about that...", especially if it's women.

>>211403910I could have sworn I heard something about a F13 series that was in the works a while back.
Here's my modern movie idea: a HS horror movie where zoomers die after seeing nudity in movies. Kind of like The Ring, but with booba. Add in a party scene where everyone sees the nude scene, and you got a traditional 3rd act bloodbath.
>>211403754>>211403910Yeah, it appears that they still don't have the rights to make any new movies as they're still with New Line, but they can just make new TV shows, video games, merch... Fucking retarded if you ask me but then again copyright laws in general are retarded.

>>211405389The problem is that for horror you need to care at least a bit about the victims.
>>211405471No you don't, you can hate them to the point you watch to see them die. The slasher genre is filled with people watching them solely for the kills and the killer, not the characters.
>>211405471I think it would be fun. You can have a couple have sex and worry about if it counts and only cover her boobs. You can have someone dead and a dickhead have a timed post of some ex's tits go up on their timeline and people check to see why he's not dead and wind up dead themselves. You can kill the annoying religious siblings with a playboy. It's a great idea
