I always wondered why they didn’t just do Resident Evil 1’s story verbatim until I heard the Japs at CAPCOM were afraid people wouldn’t play the game if they saw the movie (smart!) and didn’t allow it.

You fuckin serious? The guy from 'TWUK'? Now I'm interested, considering the cast looks good.

All they need to do is follow the vibe of the franchise so far - hot people doing cool stuff. I mean, for fuck's sake - the soldiers in ResE1 were so bad they actually increased the number of enemies in the first shootout. Took 'em a good 40min to discover the headshot, and the film was still good ;dd

doubt it. its going to be another movie with new characters and little connection to the games. they should just adapt 7. dan stevens as ethan, walton goggins and juliette lewis as the bakers, two random young adult actors as lucas and zoe to bring in the netflix audience, smaller roles like the cop and the sewer gators should be played by actors who have played the roles in the games like nick apostolides so the nerds can point at the screen and say "i know who that is!!". if you absolutely need a dei hire, have a cute asian or latinx play mia. boom, you have a hit.

It basically does the same thing the original film did. It is set before the destruction of Raccoon City. There is an Umbrella research team that has been very naughty and things have gone haywire and they went against regulations and had the anti-virus mailed to themselves. (Thus Bryan is the courier delivering it.) You'll see people saying the movie is totally different to previous films, which feels like a stretch. It is definitely more gory and body-horror oriented. A bit like the James Gunn film Slither. Not really a criticism, but it sometimes does feel like an indie horror script that had RE words inserted into the second half.

Actually, it's been a while since I read the script. I think the package contains some compound they need to produce the counter-agent to the highly aggressive infection that turns people and animals into tentacle monsters. The package was ordered by Umbrella regardless. They're carrying out research they really shouldn't be doing on one of the upper floors of the Raccoon City hospital. (Which is out of town for some reason.)

It's not super clear. I would not be surprised if Sony keep it intentionally vague because the last two reboots flopped. Nothing in the script I read really contradicted the Andersonverse movies. I'm not saying they'll do this, but they have the option of simply refusing to commit to any specific continuity.

>How does the film end?
The bite on his arm gets worse and worse, and turns into a monster and kills all the researcher. He howls into the night as the camera pulls back showing the Raccoon City skyline. Reminds me a bit of the bad ending of Dying Light: The Following. But it also, as I said, has that "fuck you" energy that indie horror movies often have. The original movies often had downbeat endings but they never had spiteful endings. I could see this ending being changed by the finished movie.
>Are there any monsters from the games or zombies?
No zombies. They're infected through. They sprout tentacles they don't have control over. That's the initial stage of the infection that progresses. It's like they've tried to split the difference between t-virus zombies and las plagas. But the whole worm-tentacle angle is very Slither-like.

What's odd is a lot of the people who have the Weapons script, AFAIK, also have the RE script, but the latter isn't circulating as much. I assume they came from the same source.

Eeeeeh, I’m not sure how much I like all that noise. I’ve got nothing against a pseudo prequel to the games like the first Anderson film was intended to be, but I really don’t dig that ending.

In terms of action/horror, which game do you think it mostly resembles?

Another detail is that he loots a police car and takes a RCPD jacket and a gun. The odd part is that this motif of looting police cars is from the old movies. It's not a game thing. My assumption here is that Shay Hatten, the cowriter, has seen the RE movies, and Cregger, who has not, isn't noticing the RE movie influence creeping into the script.

>In terms of action/horror, which game do you think it mostly resembles?
Probably a mixture of RE4 and RE7, but the film also comes across as AvP: Requiem-ish at points. There's a scene where the characters are chased by infected rats. They blow the rats away (the film basically turns into an action movie by halfway), and one of the female Umbrella researchers is overwhelmed by the rats and killed. We see a rat crawling down her neck, with her esophagus bulging. I think the film (script) has a strange relationship with the games tonally. True, it's not like the older films, but it's also not really like any of the games. It's sorta how people who think the games are super scary and disturbing horror envision them. Which is a bold choice, but still...

The thing that sets it apart as a film is that it is a continuous journey for our protag, Bryan. It's him going from A to B to C trying to get to the hospital. In that aspect you can definitely see it as being RE4-like.

It’s a generic American title because the first game took place in a mansion filled with monsters. The mansion is the place of residence and the monsters are the evil, therefor “resident evil”.

The franchise is actually called Biohazard, but that’s just the Japanese name that had to be changed for the western release due to legal reasons - trademark I think.

Can you /v/ posters stop? There's nothing wrong with the movie.
Original video game narratives are fucking terrible. They rely on clichés, tropes, and generic plots to get by. Turning these into movies just spreads that laziness to the big screen. We don't need that kind of generic action on screens.
Games drag on and on because you need to spend hours doing the same shit over and over again to level up or collect items.and that's boring as hell. Turning a game into a movie means turning cinema into fan service. Videogame stories are made by fans, for fans, and trying to pass that in a movie full of references and nods that only hardcore gamers will get is to appeal to a small audience. Movies need to appeal to everyone, not just a niche group of fucking nerds.. And games don't have depth, they are full of fucking cheesy one-liners and corny dialogue so what's the fucking point?
Games are full of shit like that, and it's boring as hell.

That was probably the McElroy script from 1997. It sounded pretty neat from what I was told. If what I heard was accurate, it had a big fight at the end with Wesker mutating into a Tyrant (still wearing his sunglasses) facing off against Barry mutated into a Hunter-like reptilian creature.

No. Lily Gao is too ugly to be Ada and David Harbour is a meme that just doesn't fit as Barry. Robie Amell isn't a big of enough star to be Chris Redfield, either. I will give them props on the Wesker casting, though even though it is kind of typecast lazy. A hospital as a major location is very played out for video games and that just doesn't excite me either.

God Welcome to Raccoon City sucked ass. How hard is it to adapt the game in a competent way? The Anderson ones were mostly fun because they did their own thing so you can treat them as a separate entity but this one tried to adapt the game and failed miserably.

Welcome to Raccoon City somehow managed to be even worse than all the Milla Jovovich slops.

I don't trust modern Cregger with directing me to my seat. If he were still in his twenties then yeah. The man is a complete shell of his former self to sell out for Hollywood.
