I don't think people realize just how much corner cutting is being done in a lot of these movies. Which is especially hilarious considering how studios are trying to do their damnedest to essentially eliminate all traces of VFX artist work in their behind the scenes shoots.
For instance, throughout the behind the scenes of Top Gun: Maverick, they tried to act like all of their shots were completely done practically, when that couldn't have been further from the truth. There are dozens of minutes in Top Gun: Maverick where the aircraft and landscape are purely CG.
But, the reason the movie looks so good is because they did use a lot of practical effects. And that seriously helps the effects artists when they're trying to match references.
All of the other Hollywood tentpoles, especially Marvel and DC films, fail to do this. Some of it is understandable. How the fuck else are you going to pit two super beings against each other while they're fighting in some kind of cosmic void or something? You're going to have to use VFX.
But even simple shots where people are just talking have to have VFX done for them. It's obscene. And naturally, no matter how much money you throw at the artists, they simply do not have the time to tackle all of this shit. And studios know time is money. So they're not going to spend multiple years on post-production. Get it done fast, good and cheaply. And if you know anything about reality, doing all three of those things is impossible. Best case scenario is that you got to choose two.
