How did Reeve succeed at playing Superman while others fail at it?

It wasn't Reeve that succeeded. It was the film itself. People were tired of the cynicism that the 1970s exuded and embraced movies like Star Wars and Superman that made a return back to classic heroes. Then the 80s happened which was that on steroids.

Unironically, how do we get back to classic heroes and optimistic hope?

I like Reeve more because he looks as if the Superman from the comics was transported in real life
Snyder's Superman looks like edgelord slop and Gunn's Superman looks like a Jewish incel

You can't. That shit's gone, son. Time moves forward, not backwards. Any attempt to reclaim that time would just be a facsimile of the genuine article. Which is why every movie that makes money at the BO is just nostalgia pandering tripe. Super Mario Bros, Minecraft and now a Superman movie trying to get people hyped up by bringing up the John Williams theme.

Dean Cain was great but yeah he was nowhere near Reeve's level

Look at him. That's not Christopher Reeve, that's Superman. People like to say "___ was born to play ___ " but none of them are as obviously perfect as Reeve being cast as Superman.

1. he was a classically trained stage actor
2. he had good material to work with
3. he legitimately looked like a comic book character come to life

By getting rid of the bathos and snark, by kissing goodbye to Whedon, Gunn and their ilk who are embarrassed by the concept of telling a story straight with sincerity and conviction

Also kill all zoomers because they love this stuff and they're the paying customers of today

I'm sure people could write original stories with classic heroes in them?

Can you really compare Whedon to Gunn in that regard when his Superman movie literally looks like a fucking video game/cartoon? It's pretty sincere. It's just awful.

Sure, but don't expect Hollywood to finance it or for it to be successful like the movies of days gone by.

He played it straight at a time when it was expected and very welcome. Nobody would have seriously made an unconventional Superman film during that era. The point was to be conventional, because Superman is the most stereotypical superhero ever. There was nowhere to go but up, at that point. Christopher Reeves succeeded in portraying Clark Kent/Superman, and he is arguably the best actor of that character to this day.

>Can you really compare Whedon to Gunn
In terms of their writing style and the tone they aim for, they're practically the same person. I agree though I have no idea wihat Gunn is going for with the look he's come up with for Superman. The Galaxy movies were fine visually.

It'll happen again on its own unless humanity is completely wiped out
I wouldn't worry about it. These things correct themselves.

One of the only guys who pulled off both Superman and Clark Kent. Cavill made for a good Superman, if a bit too broody all the time, the new one seems to lean more on Clark as a dork. Reeve found that sweet spot where he was convincing as Superman and believable as Clark. There's that famous scene where he considers revealing his identity to Lois and just by standing up straight and removing his glasses it with a change in attitude it actually does a good job showing how he'd get away with such an easy trick.

Like fpbp mentions, I'm sure people in the 70's believed the same thing.

The first movie is legitimately a great film due to the talent behind it and the jew producers were willing to go over budget.
Reeves also took the role super serious and the other actors were kinda pissed off at him because he put effort into the role and expected the same from them. Kidder was a bit of an airhead on set and it clashed with Reeves.

Shame about the sequels though. Jews kicked out Doner for budget reasons and the quality took a nose dive though Reeves still did the best he could with the script.

He played Superman as a good natured tradie or farmer. Ready to help and be there for you. None of the other actors have done that. He's one of a kind.
