The bigger problem is that min-maxing profits (and other such factors) often supersedes telling a good story. This has always been a problem, since the 90s even probably. A drama meant for 10 eps should not be stretched further, and a drama meant for 16 should not be squished into lesser. In the past, we whinged about the former. In current day, you whinge about the latter. Different sides of the same coin.
Every country's TV industry probably faces this "dilemma" - do we tell a story the way it's meant to be told or do we abandon artistic integrity to squeeze more money out of the thing?

yes, shows should be as long or as short as they need to be, it's pretty autistic to think everything should be 16 episodes just because that's been a network standard. american tv shows used to always give everything 20-24 episode seasons and you'd end up with so many bad filler episodes just to fill the order it was insane, even really popular/succesful shows had an assload of eps that are completely skippable because of it.
