The worst thing about working in an office is FEMALE COWORKERS.
All they do is complain about pointless shit, make drama out of nothing and talk all fucking day. They just never shut up. BLABLABLABLA all day long.
Having an office job in the 1950s/1960s as a guy must have been great.

The worst is having female coworkers who are "devs". I had to ask one to commit the work they did and it took me an hour to convince her she forgot to commit it (didnt even look at her code).

As soon as I asked she claimed I had no idea what I was doing and that I needed to be trained better. Bitch we have logs

my boss has been around long enough to have seen turnover and even she admitted that she prefers the department to be all-men the way it is now, then when it was all-women (just before I first started) because the men are way less drama

The worst part about it is bureaucracy in general, the whole fake professional no fun allowed culture. Imagine working finance in a cubicle but you can still scream slurs with your coworker bros, blare whatever music you want, eat pizza at your desk - foster a culture like that and worker happiness and productivity would shoot through the roof. Nobody wants to go to a dead silent place where you have to wear a stupid uncomfortable suit and worry about upsetting Loretta the obese HR lady for making a joke a third grader would laugh at or deal with Bill the short supervisor who acts like a complete fucking faggot with no sense of humor and gets off on having a smidgen of power over people that could overpower him with one hand.

I used to make fun of this movie with the other memes about what a cry baby he was being for complaining about his middle class job in an office. But then I actually got an office job in a cubcile and it all made sense. Everything about it is so soul crushing, from the gray penny penching shitty design and lack of color in everything to the cold corpo approved way people are forced to interact with each other, it made me go crazy. And then the money isnt even really worth it. Its enough to get by, but its money you can make anywhere really.

He was manually editing banking software code, line by line, to not break when the year changed to 2000, because when they originally coded it in the 70s, they only used two digits for the year, because they didn’t think it would still be in use 30 years later. So when the date hit 00, it wouldn’t be able to tell if it was 1900 or 2000, and the software would crash. Doesn’t really compare to basic helpdesk shit you’re talking about.

The worst is the passive-aggressive, cunty attitude so many women have. I swear it’s like 8/10 women I’ve had to deal with end every fucking sentence with some kind of “we don’t do X like that here, but okay” shit and it drives me up the fucking wall. A woman in the workplace with no attitude and is actually pleasant to be around is worth her weight in gold holy fuck it boggles my mind how nonexistent that person is. Top it off with the same worthless bitches blatantly playing favorites at work and I imagine it’s what the average workplace experience is like

In the 50s/60s all the serious work would be done by men, and if you did have women in the workplace they'd do clerical or secretarial work that wasn't high stakes or serious. My workplace is full of libtarded cunty women. They are either full blown frumpy millennial redditors who constantly reference "The Office" or aging decrepit hags. They constantly complain, constantly ask for help with their assigned tasks, and constantly talk to one another about inane bullshit.

>tell them that many (most?) people dislike their jobs and how that’s at least 25% of your time every week going towards something you hate, so it’s incentive to work hard, try new things and find something that you enjoy, are good at and can make a good living

These miserable office drones and other workers are an honest to god mystery to me. I worked shit jobs when I was younger and it just pushed me to want more. At around age 21 or so I just couldn’t handle settling for mediocrity and I don’t know why others do. I’m not saying “dude just get a PhD” or “dude just get a great job it’s easy” but to complain and not try to make any change because of laziness/inertia/self sabotage/complacency is just crazy to me.

My point is I didn’t luck out. I worked my ass off and was very purposeful in my actions. I didn’t go on autopilot and wonder why I hadn’t found my passion and why things didn’t work out the way I wanted.

People settle and then they wonder why fortune didn’t fall into their lap.

The longer I work for the same company the less I care and the more annoyed with my coworkers and management I get. I hate authority and most of my coworkers are brain dead normies who will say the most msm programmed shit without even blinking.
I am getting close to having hysterical laughter fits during the breaks when we talk about random shit and they bring up some (((current news))) shit without thinking critically about it at all.

You got lucky. Period. Your hard work helped you get into a position to maximize that luck, but it was still pure luck that got you where you are. Where you were born matters 100,000x more than hard work. You think you could have still worked your way to your position if you were born in rural China with a debilitating disease? Or as a black woman in Chicago born to a poor mother who beat you daily? You think you can just "work hard" away every obstacle in life? If so you really are privileged. Not saying you shouldn't enjoy your lucky lot in life, you should, but understand it was 10% you 90% lucky circumstances that got you that life.

The real kicker is that 20% of the people at any workplace do 80%+ of the work.
I have made conscious efforts to become part of that 80% that does 20% of the work and my life is so much better now.
No bosses or coworkers think they can rely on me for anything so they never give me extra work because I hardly even do the work I am supposed to do.
I am always 5-15 minutes late and always leave 10 minutes early and all the small useless meetings we have at the start of the day I purposefully miss by being 10 minutes late.

ITT: Socially awkward introverts that think small talk is literally hitler.
Try being good at conversation and you can actually choose when to interact and how to politely brush off people. Working in the office is such an easy way to have a collective audience to solve your general problems too. Can't believe the amount of times I've been telling a quirky story only to have someone chime in with a nugget of info that makes my life better. And it's free!
There's politics everywhere you just need to leave offices that are truly irredeemable. Having a boss that doesn't bother you unless you are majorly missing deadlines is the best and anons lack the drive to get in a position like that. They take the first wagie cubicle they get and then bitch about their peers that they got through skill-based matchmaking.

Thats because the management realises that they can just keep pushing these hard working goys to the breaking point and statistically they will be able to find a new goy once the one they are overworking breaks down.

BUT in true clown world fashion they have went too far and now they are struggling with finding hard working goys and also are forced to hire more and more useless dei “workers” that will keep increasing operating costs in an unstoppable spiral until every single large established brand goes under.

I am surprised that not more of these “industry giants” have been bankrupted yet but I guess that blackrock and their retirement plans are keeping this titanic of an economy afloat for a few more years.

As long as it affects the boomers too which it finally does I am ok with it all burning down.

You need to apply for a new position to get an actual pay raise. Any “promotion” you are given in your department or position will just result in more work and equal pay or a VERY slight salary increase but not really enough to justify the amount of extra work you now have.

NEVER accept any of these half assed “promotions” it’s not worth it.

Plus it resets the timer for when you can change jobs and not have your managers be mad at you.
In todays economy you need to change jobs ever 2-3 years to stay on top of inflation and these small “promotions” reset that timer within the company you are currently working for.

When you work hard you become irreplaceable in your current role so instead the promotion goes to the guy who barely carries his own weight and kisses all the right asses. >company sends out an engagement survey to judge how the employees are connecting to the brand, how they feel about the company, etc.
>survey closes on a Friday
>next Tuesday, we get an email about "addressing current business realities" and "cost-efficiency measures"
>Wednesday, email that they're changing our "internal talent search system" and that some skills will be "crowdsourced"
>Thursday, they pause education reimbursements
>ff two weeks, on a call listening to the huge department dial-in hands on meeting
>head of staff mentions some of our contracts were "descoped" by the customer
>breaking point reached, immediately call my dad and tell him all of this
>he tells me he's heard every one of those lines before and has even been forced to say some himself
>mfw realizing he went through all of this himself 40 years ago completely demoralized me
Time is a flat circle, the company doesn't care about you, and if you threaten their brand or their image even incidentally you're out the door no matter how valuable or important you might be to them. Never forget that. Spend time with your kids, your friends, your family. A job is just a job and the only people who remember how late you work will be you and your family.

I agree. Return to monke is a dumb proposition. However I like to believe there's a modicum of truth to be found. I refer to this Calvin & Hobbes comic a lot because it reminds me that if there's money to be made from more efficiency or productivity, demand for it will increase. Life is like one huge cookie clicker game to the spreadsheeters sitting in HQ on the 30th floor.
In reality the world is so insanely efficient and productive that most jobs as evidenced by Office Space and this thread are useless, but because of our economics of scarcity, you MUST work a job to survive. If there was going to be any return to monke, I think a better alternative is actually UBI for citizens and forced job cuts. Then the people who HAVE a job become like the tax payers of Rome, where it (a job) is considered a privilege and a status symbol of your place in society. But anytime UBI is brought up, you get mouth frothers saying "BUT THEY SHOULD BE WORKING" which goes right back to the maximize productivity to incrementally maximize money issue, all over again. It's antithetical to the economics of scarcity itself. So maybe it's just more fun as a thought experiment.

Why would I work my ass off for multiple years, doing a shit load of extra spreadsheets and management stuff for that amount of money?

It was so unbelievably scummy. And they also put out an email praising how people felt connected to the managers and shit. Managers however get access to the survey results, and they said across the board that people felt super negatively about the brand and what the brand represents

There’s a lot of truth to this. I grew up working on our family farm and then I spent 4 years doing paper work for Luminaire furniture in Miami. Luminaire paid a lot more but it was extremely unsatisfying where as after laying irrigation pipe and driving trucks and tractors and branding cattle and putting up fence posts while getting cooked in the sun made me look forward to every break and every meal and I slept like a baby every night. And I had erectile dysfunction while doing an office job but as soon as I took over my parents farm I could fuck like a bull again.

problem is who pays? the rich will just flee the country or set up in a tax haven so that either pushed the burden even more so on the middle or you get even higher inflation as you print more money for ubi.

also ubi is just unemployment but bigger, give them $1k/month and they'll as for $2k, give them $20k/month and they'll as for $40k. better to just liquidate the un-useful after mandatory civil conscription starship troopers style, but mandatory

Don't be fucking stupid and that is not even close to how life expectancy works, and you should know this. If you got to puberty you'd probably be living to your 60s just as well as you would nowadays. The life expectancy was just lower because every 2-5 years an epidemic would sweep through and kill children before germ theory and widespread immunization became common.

I also said tried. Like I said in another post I never actually fucked. I already coomed in that case and fell asleep on her bed lol.

The only time I ever saw a UBI type of economy depicted that could work was in a Heinlein novel, but that was only because the economy was monitored by genetically modified math autists and networked computers that could predict and observe global economic activity and make such adjustments and balances to the currency distribution.
Wierd story though, basically two parts, one with one of these math autists becoming enamored with a conspiracy of elites wanting to overthrow the governing committees and clean out peoples they deem "undesirable" which appealed to his calculating brain, but then when he finds his oneitis waifu at a party and later finds out she'd be one of the undesireables, he's conflicted. His friend knows the conspiracy is fake and gay and they just want to off people to loot the economic balance amongst themselves and stops it, then the second half is his navel gazing about the meaning of life while the governing commitees debate philosophy and if telepathy or consciousness transfer is possible and how to scientifically find out.

Considering the memes always paint Heinlein as a borderline fascist, I was surprised this rich developed world was a global centralised planned economy where every individual is equal under the law and the villains are essentially elitists wanting to undermine the system for their own ends.

This movie is the definition of the grass being greener on the other side.
Yes, a soulless office job in the 90's might not have been the greatest thing, but I bet you most people would give anything to go back to that job, time, economy, attitudes, and atmosphere.
For that reason it's aged poorly.

This, office-life is easy and you don't even have to be great at conversation desu, but being easy to talk to certainly helps elevate things. I work with a legit autistic guy and he's beloved by the office despite sometimes being stiff or awkward in day-to-day social situations. The office is probably the best environment to seamlessly interact with other people to build a mixed social circle of men and women in similar age groups if you're young/in a new city. The trick is to stick to the major companies though. Smaller ones are a real crapshoot whether they're great or terrible.

So you've now moved the goalposts by trying to argue semantics. By your own standard all jobs are temporary. But you know that's not the argument.

The question is; was he hired as a temp to fix Y2K, or was he already working there prior.
The answer is: you don't know because the movie doesn't tell you.

Nta but the other guy’s argument stands and you’ve moved the goalposts. It’s much easier to get rid of someone on a temporary contract by just not renewing their contract. Less ugliness involved. The implication in the original post was that he was hired -temporarily- to exclusively work on Y2K, and then get the boot.
But you have no idea how long he has been working there. He could have been working on general banking software there for 10 years prior and was only focused on Y2K because of the time period. You have no fucking idea because the movie doesn't tell you.
However the fact is if he was temporary it doesn't make sense for the big dogs to do a big song and dance about his contract - he simply would not have been renewed. The implication is that he has been working there for some time.

His job was temporary, yes, as evident by the fact that he was going to get fired, and the fact that Y2K would pass. Except THAT IS NOT THE POINT of that post.
The implication of that post is that his job was temporary -because- he was only hired for Y2K. The movie never touches on this.

Again, you are a retard.

Again, I’ll repeat/reiterate this because I enjoy watching stupid people be stupid, in the late 90s, tons of companies mass hired code monkeys in positions the companies would claim are permanent to patch out all y2k vulnerabilities. If you weren’t stupid you realized your absurdly high paying job was temporary, as you’d be one of a dozen or so code monkeys working to patch a specific bug, and there was no other work lined up after.

This is the literal and explicitly stated setting of office space. 1999, a tech company patching y2k vulnerabilities for other companies.

I think you enjoy being stupid. No one else was working on Y2K in that movie. It had nothing to do with the plot outside of being his current job.

There is no reason for office wagies to work a 40 hour 9-5 schedule that was designed for factory workers on assembly lines where hours worked directly translates to productivity, but since we live in an open air Jewish prison this relic isn't going away. I work in insurance. I calculate and negotiate prices when companies look around for quotes. To answer your question most of the time I spend 1-2 hours a day actually working (3-4 hours during our busiest quarter of the year). If it's really slow I only have 15-30 minutes of work to do.

Besides emails and meetings I do my actual work in Excel plus a couple proprietary programs. The emails are mostly just making sure the right people signed off on important stuff and reminding people to do shit that has to be done in order for you to do your job. That way there is a paper trail to show you did what you could in case some lazy faggot coworker is preventing you from doing your job because he wouldn't do his job. Externally most of my negotiating takes place over email with the occasional phone call. The meetings are 90% foids and middle managers wasting our time talking about nothing and 10% useful information that could have just been an email.

When I was still reporting to an office that other 4-7.75 hours of the day were spent pretending to look busy if my manager was in. If she was not in I could play around on my phone, read a book and take a 2 hour lunch with coworkers. Now that I work from home I have an L-shaped desk in my home office. My work computer is on one side and my own computer is on the other side. I play vidya and shitpost all day on my computer, slide over to my work computer when there is something to do, then go back to vidya/shitposting. I usually eat lunch at my desk, then spend my lunch hour doing chores or fucking my FWB or taking a walk if it's nice out. You have so much more time in your day without a commute and when you can do chores during work hours.

>what were Peter’s coworkers/friends jobs

It’s safe to infer they were doing the same thing Peter was before Peter gets hypnotherapy, and the people person was selling the necessity of y2k patching to other companies. Hence the setting of the movie.

I'm actually in a Leaf zogbot but holy most of that stuff applies to us.
The funniest email we got from our Gen and Defence Staff was talking about how niggers commit all the crime, disobedience, AWOL, etc and that is is racial profiling because they're being targeted for all this.

Any Leaf fags who read their email in 2023/24 can find it, it was accidentally kino.

I hate women so much it's not even funny. The only good military women HATE military women, not even joking.
If you ever join you will HATE simps and women with all your heart, niggers are just niggers I don't expect much from them. Jeets are annoying and very dumb.
Officers are generally leftist faggots like he said, but WOMEN IN POWER are so awful I can't even begin to describe it

I mean making six figures (just over prebonus) is nice. having a wfh job that doesn't require intense effort but regardless of scenario computer jobs are just draining. the corpo climb is also a huge waste of effort unless you're ultra shallow. making what I am making I am beyond comfortable and can't see any reason to make more or carry more stress just to do so.

Yeah, being forced to look like you are working is worse than actually working. At least time passes fast when you're legitimately busy. Fortunately my manager had to travel often. The days she wasn't around to constantly check on me were nice.

But remote work is incredible. I NEET'd for awhile in between jobs and my lifestyle now working from home is pretty similar. Only major difference is I have to keep a normal sleep schedule. Just make sure you work somewhere that embraces remote work instead of somewhere with 1984 "camera always on" policies and executives/middle managers pushing the "return to office" meme.

The influence of films like Office Space and Fight Club and others, and the general cynicism and pseudo "class war" bullshit of Gen X influence ruined countless impressionable young lives. Created a bunch of jobless do nothing drifters and dropouts. I know, I'm one of them. If it wasn't for this kind of prevailing attitude to relate with and embolden me I probably would have eventually relented and been like "welp it's the way of the world guess I gotta get a job now"

The point of all of those movies was how it was more beneficial to “society” and “the economy” to hire people to perform tasks that could be automated than it was to automate their jobs. The steam engine was invented in 20bc but it wasn’t developed because slave labor was the backbone of the Roman economy.
