Eric Rohmer
Any Rohmer fans here? I think his films are something special.

He was a master, I think he understood male sexuality better than just about everyone, The Collector is probably the best at showing this understanding. Although my favorite of his is My Night at Maud's

yeah, i know it's one of his more acclaimed movies but i just can't stand that lead actress
she's all right as a supporting character like in the aviator's wife but following her for a whole movie was just a bummer

My favorite frenchie. I always get so engrossed in his movies. And I always end up watching a movie if I see it described as Rohmerian, even if it never lives up.

Some of Mia Hansen-Love's movies and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's movie Passion. I got into Whit Stillman because someone compared him to Rohmer which was pretty off.

>even if it never lives up.
It never does, does it, even director's whose entire output they say is rohmerian like Hong Sang-Soo are not really it.

Give it some time and then rewatch it, the first time i saw it i was 19 and also couldn't stand her, the second time was during the pandemic, fell in love with both her and the film. Marie Riviere is a gift, she grows on you.

The Green Ray was a fave but now it kind of makes me laugh... still a beautiful film, mostly the ending. Clever how the role of indecision in small everyday things is reflected in larger romantic entanglements, Rohmer really cared about what weather could add to a film shoot.

Really cool concept for a film however, remember loving it... would make a decent double feature with Woody Allen's Sleeper, just due to the architecture. It's too bad they weren't shooting music videos for Rohmer's movies.

>Cergy-Pontoise also reflects Rohmer’s own sense of psychogeography. Like the architects of the new towns, Rohmer obsessively designed and premeditated his work. Before filming, he made a documentary and a four-part TV series about planned communities and Cergy-Pontoise, which go into great detail about the conceptual and practical design behind these environments. He also visited Cergy-Pontoise every month for over a year before shooting started, and had Renoir and Chaulet live there while playing Léa and Blanche.
Anonymous No.211429850
>Beneath this illusion, though, an uncanny feeling lingers throughout the film as Rohmer reveals cracks in the smooth surfaces. When Blanche and Fabien visit a lake where visitors from outside the town also gather, it’s the first time we see people that Cergy-Pontoise leaves out. Rohmer devotes several shots to a set of racially diverse, lower-class groups, briefly revealing the world outside this cloistered bubble. Another subtle moment of self-awareness occurs when Léa critiques Blanche’s apartment complex, likening it to a “barracks.” Blanche responds by saying: “I sound like a brochure. But to me it feels like being in a luxury hotel,” to which Léa cheekily responds: “Sure, if you don’t stay too long.”
This is surely one of the most cinematic 'locked room' dramas, sort of like Rohmer's warm-weather answer to Kubrick's The Shining. It has a lot of the visual depth found in Branagh's Hamlet or The West Wing.

>because the film takes place on Christmas Eve, Éric Rohmer wanted to shoot the film on and around that day. Actor Jean-Louis Trintignant was not available; thus, filming was delayed for an entire year.
>“Months before, he had scheduled the exact date for shooting the scene when it snows; that day, right on time, it snowed, and the snow lasted all day long, not just a few minutes.” Later, Almendros makes a curious shift. “It is not just a question of luck; the key lies in Rohmer’s detailed preparation.”
