Its basic training, he goes on a few small scale missions, his officer realizes he has potential and sends him off the OCS where he goes through more school, meanwhile the war with the bugs goes hot. Its good, but its also pretty boring and dry.

The reason many good movies from ~1960-2010 that have, admitedly, leftist themes are classic isn't because of the left-wing aspects of the movies. Starship Troopers isn't making fun of anybody because it is radically different to the book. Vast majority of the book is boring dry conversation in a classroom and only near the end do we get to any combat.
