A lot of the initial backlash really did amount to "not made for me", "not my headcanon", "not a direct adaptation of a book I read in 1992", or "where was Han Solo?".
And when you parse through all of that, there are legitimate criticisms, but certainly less of them. Maybe they used more CGI than they absolutely should have, sure. Maybe most of the characters could have used more development.
But then you can say some of that about the original movies too. They really always were on some level at least, dumb special effects flicks, with leaps of logic in storytelling that you just have to roll with. Was Vader's redemption earned? I'd say no, to be honest, it wasn't. I never understood why Luke saw good in him. That just comes out of left field.

I went back & watched the prequels last week. It must have been over 10 years since I last saw them probably 15 years or more
Phantom Menace is officially nostalgic at this point. The film was really good. We genuinely didn't deserve it and I feel bad for how harshly Lucas was crucified over what has become a good movie. It's not perfect and yeah a lot of shit doesn't make sense & the tone is really all over the place but it actually feels like star wars. Like the worst star wars, but still star wars.
Attack of the Clones has like moments of clarity but is really really terrible. After being criticized so harshly over Phantom Menace IDK if Lucas decided to just double down on his process or wtf happened but it's not a good film at all. The opening bit is alright. The Anakin Padme thing is disgusting & cringe I can't imagine being a thinking human being involved with any of that and thinking it was even decent let alone good enough. Kamino is kinda cool, Jango fett has the best performance in the entire move (better than Christopher Lee even!) but it feels very fake and empty CGI. Anakin killing sand people is alright but the Padme thing is so cringe again. Geonosis is pretty bad, the droid factory video game thing is totally forgettable but the coliseum is cool. The big battle is kinda cool until Yoda shows up with the clone army. The light saber battle is the worst in any of the films. This is the movie that ruined the franchise
Revenge of the Sith just feels like Middle School idk it's hard for me to give an honest review because I saw it so many times in like 6th grade or however old I was. The first part is very cool. I wish Attack of the Clones had just been 2 hours of that sort of thing where Anakin and Obi Wan go on adventures during the Clone Wars. The pacing is too fast in the middle because Lucas ran out of time. Palpatine is cool but kinda cartoonish. The whole younglings thing is pretty cringe but seeing the actual transformation of Darth vader is cool

I don't think Palpatine really cared either way about it, but the Trade Federation needed it signed to legitimize their blockade and give them more legal economic control of the Naboo system.
Palpatine just needed Naboo to be bullied so he could make his case to the Senate and garner support while undermining the current power bloc under Chancellor Valorum, whose allies were potentially causing obstructions regarding Republic support for Naboo (atleast that's Palpatine's take on it).

It's been a few years since I watched it, but I think he was expecting Padme to roll over and be intimidated since she was young and inexperienced, but when he learned she was coming to Coruscant it was an opportunity for him; she was a much more empathetic case to directly depose the current Chancellor, and her doing so would make his rise into the position politically easier.
As far as Darth Maul tracking them to Tatooine, not sure what his plan was; if he wanted to capture Padme and keep her on ice, or assassinate her to make her a martyr to build up the "look what this ineffective Senate allowed to happen to Naboo and their beloved young queen" narrative.

Palpatine had his bases covered for the most part, the only thing that went south for him was losing his apprentice Darth Maul. The Trade Federation got embarassed by Padme's manuevering to ally with the indigenous Gungans to resist the occupation force would've likely removed the Trade Federation as a direct asset for Palpatine (or more accurately in this case, Sidious), but we know later it also pushed them to the CIS which was influenced if not outright controlled by Dooku/Tyranus. Also it introduced Palpatine to Anakin which we know later became probably his best asset.

and once you accept that, you STILL don't have to do a prequel set only like 20 or 30 years sooner, you could easily do some old republic shit with new characters, a whole new story, remember Obi-Wan in episode 4 says the Jedi Knights were peacekeepers in the Old Republic, thousands of generations ago, there are literally endless stories you can tell
but he pidgeonholed himself into telling exactly one story, one small story over the entire trilogy; how a "good and noble jedi knight" became Darth Vader. Why the fuck is this small character study worth all three films? Because of this the pace is forced to go excruciatingly slow and cover many of the same characters we already knew, or their direct antecedents.
lucas proves himself a hack, he took "popular character you know" and gave him the most boring romeo and juliet hackneyed fallen romance backstory imaginable, with no imagination
he actually ruined Darth Vader, it's amazing, if you just left him alone he's one of the greatest characters in fiction, a fallen noble jedi knight who redeems himself saving the son he never knew, and return of the jedi was already getting sloppy, it was time to end the story
lucas should have trusted his imagination, spun a whole new story out of whole cloth, not reprised old characters and copy pasted cliffs notes from other better stories

The entire point of the trilogy is showing that the Jedi completely lost their way, they took Anakin away from his mother, they let his mother die despite Anakin having a preminition about it, and when Anakin had the same preminition about Padme Yoda just told him that he has to accept it because it's the part of life.
Palpatine groomed him into thinking that the Jedi and Sith are just the 2 sides of the same coin, and with the Jedi gone nothing will change because the Sith are not inherently evil, also he promised the powers to save Padme, which the Jedi couldn't.

It's again a bad comparsion. Yoda in ESB is a person who learned from his failures that happened in the PT era. The point is exactly that the Jedi were way too obsessed about their "no emotions and attachments" rule and instead of giving the special treatment for Anakin who started his training at a too old age, they gave him the normal jedi treatment and basically offered him on a silver platter to the devil. The Jedi were arrogant, and this is a common returning theme in Star Wars that being arrogant will lead to your downfall (Maul, Anakin on Mustafar)
