An incredible first season, a very mid and boring second season, a disappointing movie up it's own ass, and a 3rd season that is a troll job by Lynch who made it only because it was a big paycheque for him and he rubs the viewers nose in it every second of the season (but midwits think they "get the meaning" behind it so delude themselves into believing they're watching high art).

Stop at the end of season 1 and imagine how the rest played out in your own mind, because what came after that is just a waste of time.

We’re really in a Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me situation here, isn’t that right Zach? Many Arnold S fans would agree it was the pinnacle of early 90s television but any true cinema fan knows Lynch’s real vision only blossomed with the release of the belated prequel, after the influence of co-creator Mark Frost was fully shed.
Now watch me shred this skateboard.

it's kind of fun if you don't take it that seriously, but it's very obvious the show went off the rails and didn't know what to do during that portion. I find it a lot easier to sit through knowing that there is still plenty of kino to come in the finale, FWWM and season 3. it's just like a little reprieve. I definitely would have been frustrated watching it back in the 90s though.

Windom sucked, he was way more menacing at the start of the season when he was being built up in the background. but then he was just way too goofy and deflated his whole presence.

the best things about that stretch are Andy/Dick, and Ben's civil war arc. the sawmill scheming is pretty good too.

>"real world"
Even through a fucked up David Lynch filter, the ending of The Return is very obviously not the real world. What's with the sudden cowboy attack at the diner, which everyone reacts relatively nonchalantly too? Finding a diner named Judy and instantly knowing that Laura Palmer (or some version of her) must be the waitress working there? Putting the guns in the oil? The corpse in Carrie's house? The Laura scream turning off all the lights in the end? And if it is the real world, why are these characters named Richard and Carrie instead of, oh I don't know, Kyle and Sheryl?
Rewatch the last episode, it's clearly not the real world. The only evidence that it might be the real world is the fact that the woman in the house is the real woman who owns that house. Maybe they just wanted to finally give her a role as a little Easter egg? Seems more likely to me

I will say this, season 1 is great, season 2 is great then it gets bad but the bad is good in its own way that you dont want to change. Then the movie is weird, but then you want to rewatch it a lot and its anti comfy. Then season 3 is weird, feels off, has moments that feels like its not going anywhere and then you end up loving it more than any season and wish you could relive and rewatch it again.

Lynch describes the books as "Frost's version" of the story, but that doesn't make them incompatible with the show. Everything in them is still based on their collaborative ideas and canon, it's just that Lynch didn't choose to include everything they discussed in the show to keep it more open ended. The same goes for the older books like The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer by Jennifer Lynch (who was the only person they revealed the killer to before filming the episode), with the only retcon I'm aware of being that Cooper investigated Teresa Banks's murder instead of Desmond in the books (Kyle didn't really want to play the character again so they scaled down his part).

A pretentious snoozefest for the "you just wouldn't get it" crowd. The absolute definition of "it insists upon itself. Good ideas, characters and setting that falls victim to an arthouse weirdo's audience of one. It's an Andy Kaufman joke in that it was all just one giant prank on the audience so the creator could have a chuckle.

If you're going to watch anything Twin Peaks watch the movie.

If you haven't had access to Twin Peaks and you're watching everything on physical there is zero chance you've seen everything else Lynch has done. On the Air has been out of print since the 90's and there's even more obscure stuff than that like Industrial Symphony No. 1. Keep digging, anon.
Alan Wake 2 borrowed a handful of ideas from the last season of Twin Peaks, so you've got that to look forward to. The first game was actually what got me into the series since people often recommended the two together. Also the diner in Alan Wake is a perfect recreation of the real diner they filmed Twin Peaks in. I visited it in February and it's uncanny walking through a place you've technically never been to but have walked through in a videogame.

alot of none sense off shoot storylines are in your future, can save time by just watching first 2-3 ep. and last 2-3 ep. and the movie, can skip season 3 entirely and maybe just watch the last 15min of the last episode of season 3 to see how fucking retarded the show is. then you can watch the funcopop faggot yt channel that goes for like 4-8hours describing how the elctrical powerlines and radio waves are all connected into the lynchian hellscape

This is not a series of 2 seasons..

Season 1 is season 1
Season 2 is episodes 1 thru 9
Season 3 has a pilot that is stretched from episode 10 through to 13 and is the worst part of the show unabridged; the rest however is canon
FWWM + RETURN is a good companion

Im watching for the first time, and am currently on the post-reveal season 2 stuff.
Lucy baby-drama is kino, Nadine high-school plot is aids. Josie Packard looks very cute in her maid outfit.
The rest is to early to tell. I'd love to lurk on this thread and discuss more, but im trying to be mindful of spoilers. I'm already vaguely spoiled on the s2 finale which sucks (although knowing that the finale is really good does help slog though Nadine joining the high school wrestling team, which is seriously aids).

An actual soap opera with some real kino
The pilot is not episode 1, it's a pilot that was filmed 6 months before series episodes were, so don't be like one of those people who call it episode 1
Donna and James are diarrhea shit
Audrey is best girl
Cooper is best boy
The first nine episodes of season 2 are great with strong momentum
The following episodes are fine, but they lack a driving influence and fall more into standard antics without the same substance. If you like the characters, you'll still like the episodes.
Episode 29 is pure unfiltered kino
Fire Walk With Me is closer to a standard Lynch film with bad feelings, you might not like it and it was widely hated at release because it didn't resolve season 2's final cliffhanger
The Missing Pieces is an hour and a half of deleted/bonus scenes for Fire Walk With Me and is necessary viewing for The Return
The Return will leave you with even more questions, but you can live with it at least, and its tone is closer to FWWM than the series, there are no soap opera elements

The theatrical cut is absolutely worth watching as an actual movie. The scenes that were removed are great for Twin Peaks fans, but they also drag down the pacing, tone, and narrative of what the movie is trying to be. It's great to have Pete and Josie, but it's there for the benefit of the fans rather than for the benefit of the movie.

It would be better to watch Fire Walk With Me as-is, then The Missing Pieces, and then eventually a re-edit with everything together.

I'm with you on the theatrical cut of FWWM being worth watching as a movie, it's incredible, but watching The Missing Pieces is not a satisfying experience for normies, way too disjointed and uneven, and for that reason I'd also recommend that Comaland Miniseries to new viewers who are watching it between the original run and the Return. I'm an oldfag Twin Peaks fan and have seen all the fan edits and the Comaland one is the only one I'd recommend now. It really feels like it could have been put together by HBO.

It's true. Episode numbering begins after the pilot, it goes Pilot > Episode 1 > Episode 2...
The filming for those episodes began on February 21st, 1989 and continued into March, while the series itself starts on February 24th, 1989. It was filmed at the same time it was said to be taking place. Nobody expected the pilot to get an order for more episodes, but it did, and episode scripts began being written in the summer and being filmed in the fall. It's because of this that there are year discrepancies in late season 1/The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, because some writers (including Jennifer Lynch) didn't realize the year wasn't the current year anymore once it hit 1990. Look at Audrey's hair between the pilot and the series, it's completely different. Even Andy has a mullet in the pilot. The pilot first premiered to the public in September 1989 at film festivals and continued to be shown around and released on VHS in European countries until its American TV premiere in April 1990. While the European pilot had the extended ending and premiered first, the TV ending is what was first written. But at any rate, the pilot is its own entity before season 1.

You can follow the series and track it from day to day in February/March 1989, but it gets a bit harder to follow after the 3 day timeskip following Episode 16 (Saturday, March 11th, 1989). It seems to make sense until Cooper says it's Thursday night when it should be Wednesday, and then Episode 24's recap has Cooper claim it's Thursday, March 28th (this was the date Episode 24 was airing in 1991, doesn't work for 1989). Production notes show that there was a continuity manager who wrote down the dates and times scenes should take place, but someone must have got mixed up.

Cooper wakes up in Part 18 in a different motel without Diane. He has awoken from the dream. The director is an autist who explicitly wrote "It's yrev very good to see you again old friend" as a hint that Mr. C's left ring finger had a backwards print, with said finger being "the spiritual mound".

There's no fucking way I could ever figure out something like that, that's just how Lynch thinks. I haven't read any crazy old Tibetan manuscripts.

The pilot (both versions) have official 4K versions remastered by David Lynch that came with the "From Z to A" box set that came out in 2019, and got a repackaged version this year. Part 8 of season 3/The Return also got a 4K remaster with this set. Finally, Fire Walk With Me got a 4K version (without HDR) within the last couple of years in Europe, and that version is being brought to North America this year. I think it also has the content from The Missing Pieces.

As for the series, The Entire Mystery (which was repackaged into From Z to A) is the 2014 Blu-ray release of the original series, Fire Walk With Me, and The Missing Pieces, and it was completely remastered from the original negatives and even color-corrected to have the red hue that the series is supposed to have. This version can be found through the usual places, but I ended up buying From Z to A after I wanted to get all the bonus features, of which there are a lot. Season 3/The Return is the other half of From Z to A, being a repackaging of its Blu-ray release (known as A Limited Event Series).

While the Definitive Gold Box Edition DVD set of the original series has basically been superseded and had nearly all of its special features carried over to The Entire Mystery, it was really good for the time and still has a handful of exclusive features that you can find online (ie. the SNL skit, Japan's Georgia Coffee commercials directed by Lynch).

>>211461256
Lynch directed all 18 episodes of season 3, the original pilot, Episode 2, Episode 8 (the first episode of season 2), Episode 9, Episode 14, Episode 29 (the original finale), and FWWM. He is the co-writer of the series with Mark Frost, but he may as well be called the series director, especially since most of the episodes not directed by him before Episode 17 were done by people trying to fit it to his style.
