Why'd he only make 6 kinos in his whole career? I miss him so much bros.

He's one of those artists who couldn't find much mainstream commercial success overall. Obviously certain projects caught on, but in general he wasn't a guaranteed money maker and it was difficult for him to secure funding.
He needed someone to be a William Randolph Hearst to his George Herriman, and he never found it. Sometimes I fantasize about going back in time, becoming rich, and just bankrolling David Lynch because I love his work.

>his work only got better with time
>1990, he makes Wild At Heart, his fifth movie
>afterwards he made five more movies and multiple tv shows
>none are as good or better than Wild At Heart
I love him but his work definitely didn't get better with time

I think The Return was the perfect swan song for him. Sure I'd have loved to see more from him, but if he had to go, that was a good place to stop.

He only has 3 kino films(FWWM, LH, IE).
And one amazing TV series, of course. The rest are non-essential and don't matter.

Agreed. I was saying this in another thread, but the Return feels like a culmination of all his work. Like he was looking back over his career and revisiting ideas while making it. It's a great capstone to his filmography.

Why I respect Lynch. He could’ve easily made commercialized movies but chose not to. Shit, Lucas wanted him to direct Return of the Jedi

Also agreed. It makes me happy that we went out with many comfy characters in his last work (Dougie, Janey-E, Mitchums, Bushnell).

I can't believe how many people to this day still get filtered by Dougie. Such a brilliant character.

I also liked that he went out still being a horndog for young Stacies as he communicated with the self-insert character with the female FBI agent, and when he tells Albert he can still get a boner in his old age.

I'll admit to some impatience with Dougie on first watch, wanting Coop to come back so badly.
But upon subsequent viewings, Dougie is kino.
Proof that Dale Cooper is goodness incarnate no matter how incapacitated he may be.

>I'll admit to some impatience with Dougie on first watch, wanting Coop to come back so badly.
oh for sure, I think everybody felt that to some extent. but I also think that's part of what makes it so great. you spend the whole time dying for Cooper to come back, which not only makes his actual return so much more satisfying. but at that moment, you also end up feeling sad to say goodbye to Dougie and see what a good character he was. and subsequently realize that the reboot never would have worked with the old Cooper - that you can never really return to the past, and it would have just been a hollow retread. and on rewatches, Dougie is just the best now that you know what's coming. it does take some time to sink in, but it's so rewarding. it's sad that so many never got past that.
admittedly I would have maybe liked a little more Cooper in the second to last episode just for fan service, but I get why it had to be the way it was.

Dougie has 1 or 2 brief scenes in the beginning and disappears.

Insane that his kids are selling all his shit, even his personal video cameras and VCR, etc. If my dad directed Eraserhead then I'd keep his own personal 35mm film print of it.

He always had trouble getting funding. Blue Velvet was made only because Lynch had an agreement with Dino de Laurentiis to make the atrocious Dune according to all the whims of his producers including Dino's dilettante daughter which secured him budget and artistic freedom for the next project. Mulholland Dr was initially a TV pilot and when that fell through a French company stepped in to finish it as a film.
