Kim Eun-sook is not necessarily an innovative writer but she really knows how to appeal to the masses. Many of her works are pop culture phenomenons. You're right that Goblin's core is a poor girl/powerful man story but that's probably part of the appeal. The fantastical elements give it a fresh coat of paint. Beyond that it's got likeable secondary characters, a good bromance, snappy banter, a high level of polish. These are things many people look for in kdramas.
But she is polarizing, not everyone enjoys her style. If you're not into it, you wouldn't be alone. Personally I dropped it when it aired and never tried rewatching but I still remember many scenes to this day. Very memorable

Finished Nine Puzzles. A decent mystery drama though I do feel somewhat underwhelmed. It had an intriguing start but didn't end up being as clever as I thought it would be. A little too contrived, too predictable at times maybe, idk. I'm not completely satisfied with some of the writing concerning the killer (how'd they pull off all that shit anyway? plus questionable childhood lore). Still entertaining and well acted overall though.
