Kek. Expose yourself harder, midwit. There are cinematic references/nods but that's not what makes them great, obviously. What makes them great is the committed vision, the visual splendor, the phenomenal soundtracks, the leaps in technology they caused and last but definitely not least the psychologically well-reasoned and aesthetically iconic fall of their young hero.

It's funny because the only people obsessing over the special effects in the prequels are the haters. The Lucas used them to tell a story, the kids didn't pay attention to them, but the OT tards spent decades complaining about the special effects.

I think a big part of how Anno handled the Rebuilds is that he was in charge of the entire studio. He had suffered considerably, over a long time, and in numerous events, from the people that were shafting Gainax and his fellow creatives. It is my belief that those experiences left a very strong impression on him, and he set aside his personal creative feelings toward the work in order to safeguard his studio and employees. He wanted to let them play a more active role, to make something that would likely be financially viable, and wouldn't risk putting them on the streets if the studio collapsed. In short, I think he told himself "you are no longer a director, you are the employer of these people, and you need to see this project succeed. That is more important than using these films purely as my personal outlets".

you have actually touched on something that OP is completely ignoring, Lucas completely self funded Star Wars besides Ep4 whereas Anno was given an budget until 2014 at which point his studio was able to buy the Eva IP. Lucas' merchandising deals earned him billions of dollars, and also enable him to build Lucasfilm/Lucasarts/ILM alongside investing that money into the films themselves, by contrast I doubt Anno saw any merch money but I'm unsure of whatever his contract allowed for.

>>211455649 (OP)
OP Lucas likely knew he wasnt the best director for the job for the prequels, but no one else took his offer to direct them. Either Lucas took on directing, or people lost their jobs at that point.

also the Rebuilds are incredible.

This is false in George's case. The prequels elevated what he made with the OT. And Revenge of The Sith is his magnum opus.

He wrote the first four Indiana Jones films, wrote Willow and did a movie nobody saw about the tuskegee arimen. And beyond that, is personally responsible for every major VFX innovation between the 1970s because to the 2000s because he wasn't afraid to try out and perfect what everyone in the business thought at the time would never work and now has become standards in the industry and his work on those things helped make him a billionaire in patent and copyright royalties.

The serials weren't, and they are literally a space opera just like Star Wars, made decades prior to Star Wars. So no, Star Wars was not entirely unique. Not that that's relevant, because I said Star Wars wasn't impressive, which it wasn't. What is unique about Star Wars was it possibly being the first movie to form the modern type of fandoms that still drive average pieces of media to financial greatness.

What do you like about them? I was extremely disappointed.
Lucas did originally want other people to direct the prequels, but everyone told him it wouldn't make sense for them to do so - he knows the universe and themes, and no one else could have assembled his particular blend of visual storytelling and homage (except Anno, in another universe). In the end he realized it had to be him.

He's disappointed because the impact of Eva wasn't what he wanted it to be, and he took that as a personal failure. He's always quick to blame himself, and very quick to avoid taking credit for anything that works. It's also part of why he's so quick to say things like "oh yes, this scene has no meaning whatsoever, it's just to look cool", when it's clear that a ton of work and film history went into making it. He's trying to be self-effacing, because he secretly fears he is a hack. What should he say, though?
>Actually, it's a really emotional scene, and there's a lot of layered significance here given the juxtaposition with other characters in similar situations from earlier in the season. Also, the composition is rather obviously supposed to call to mind the science fiction works of X___, whose most famous novels dealt with the philosophical aspects of this exact problem. I'm sorry you were unable to notice that, but I promise it's not because you're oblivious or unfamiliar with cultural touchstones, but rather that I'm a bad director for not making things more obvious.

Many things, there are a lot of interviews out there. For one, he felt that the anime landscape was stagnating and he wanted to shake things up a bit. For two, he thought it was bad that people used anime as an escapist medium and failed to grow up into "real" adults by living in their pretend little worlds and having waifus. Instead, Rei became a major fixation point in Japanese audiences, including romantically on some level, and tons of characters were modeled after her.

firstly Ep5 and 6 were not directed by Lucas and those movies were fine.

>What do you like about the Rebuilds
Funnily enough it's actually Lucas' quote about "it's like poetry, it rhymes" that was a rosetta stone for the Rebuilds for me. Despite the huge departure within the Rebuilds seemingly so much of the character beats line up with the original series, not in a fan service "look at us we're doing the thing" way but in an earnest re-examination or jumping off point to develop the characters in new ways. The moment that really solidifies this for me is the understated rhymes between 3+1 and EoE, Gendo still gets "eaten", Misasto still gets shot, but those moments are within completely new contexts and outcomes while never does the film linger to highlight LOOK IT'S JUST LIKE EOE, and it's those rhymes and slight changes (alongside the larger intertextuality of the rebuilds and original series, be it interpretive or a literal universal reset) that allows for the characters to grow. EoE Misato kisses Shinji, in 3+1 the respective rhyme was her hugging him instead.

Mind you I first watched Eva in 2014 and chose not to watch the rebuilds until 3+1 had a release date I wasn't waiting between entries.

You're mistaken about where the money came from for Shin Eva. It was always self funded by Khara.
Like every Star Wars movie George made after the original, he simply had a distribution deal with Fox. In Khara's case, unlike Lucas, he wasn't particularly thankful to anyone at his old theatrical distributor (Toei) so 1-2/3/4 all have different distributors.
Regardless it's just a distribution deal for every film.
