Think about it like this. Try ascending to heaven to ask God for immortality. That's how you summon the Fist of the Heavens and get smote down. There are plenty of times in the Bible when mankind tried to reach Heaven in their hubris and got struck down and punished for daring to tread on God's territory. Tower of Babel being a specific one. But moreover, general lessons in how humans should never try to play God, such as experimenting with immortality, creating artificial life, etc.

In the original draft when Prometheus was supposed to be the prequel to the very first Alien movie he was supposed to be really mad because he had an alien in him about to burst out and he was pissed off that they basically killed him when they woke his ass up. He was going to be the alien in the machine with the chest burst that the crew of the Nostromo found. That's why the ship crashed down like it did so that the weird knobby bit pointing up in the air. It was all planned out and it was going to be really great but then a bunch of greedy fucking assholes got Ridley Scott too change it all around because they wanted to make a whole bunch of prequels and they couldn't just wrap it all up.

I think it was just because his people some kind of "fallout" with the goo that contaminated everything (as depicted in the video they find while exploring the tunnels). One has to ask why he didnt just leave after it happened so maybe he was already in cryo when it happened. Or maybe it was a quarantine protocol and he was supposed to remain in cryo until help arrived to lock everything down. Shaw presumed, or hypothesized I suppose, they were in the process of getting ready to deliver the substance to Earth when the fallout happened but I find that hard to believe as in the very first scene it is implied the goo itself mixed with Engineers DNA started life on Earth. It doesnt really make sense since the goo seems to just create xenos later on. Maybe the goo was supposed to something more in the lore, like some kind of life creating substance that is versatile in what produces, not just xenos, but this idea got dropped along the way bus there was no way to tell a bigger story about it as the following movies just focused on it being xeno goo.

Regardless, there was fallout and all his crew and science team were killed by the goo so I imagine he was pissed some retards opened his cryo chamber possibly exposing him to it as opposed to the quarantine team they sent an SOS too who would have made sure everything was safe and contained before waking him up.

This could have been an interesting premise if expanded upon. They've been around for millions of years. Their galaxy spanning civilization has eventually degenerated and most of it is in ruins. They've split into factions with differing ideas on how to proceed. Some want to biomodify themselves like Prometheus. And others want to live simple lives like the ones in Covenant. But David is a malfunctioning psycho that wants to kill them all regardless and kill all humans.

He set the black goo loose on his crewmates and sealed himself in that pod hoping to be awaken by advanced and noble people. It's meant to be a mystery. The point of the scene is that the Engineer encounters mankind, and then immediately tries to pilot his craft to Earth, to presumably kill us all. The Engineer's true motivations are unknown, but they are part of a greater story we don't know of. Fits well into the cosmic horror/Lovecraftian themes of the film.

The canon explanation at the moment via the tabletop RPG is the Engineers were at war with a creation of theirs (The Perfected/Fulfremmen), and were purposely trying to eradicate their creations to prevent their spreading.

It wasn't I'm even just that, but weyland proved that humans hadn't learned much during his sleep and demonstrated their violent tendencies and closed mindedness right in front of him. Not to mention, immortality is abominable in their eyes. The engineers hold the cycle of life and death as sacred and good. Immortality fundamentally goes against it.
