Why has Bryce Dallas Howard been drawn to the mid-30's girl failure archetype lately?

I'll be honest Deep Cover was really funny but Nick Mohammed was the worst part of the movie.
Having some awkward fag stutter through every scene and dragging jokes out for longer than they should is the worst part of any movie and the inevitable "he actually seduces the [insert crazy woman here] and grows some balls and actually talks with confidence at the end!" scene is rarely worth it.
