This is why I love the Bojack movie. Gohan was about a year older from the Cell Games in that continuity and he was still training. Even Future Trunks (who one-shotted his version of the Androids and Imperfect Cell) couldn't match him.

I admit I did like the Clark Kent aspect of Gohan at high school because it harkened back to DB's comedic elements.

I suspect because he was put in more dangerous situations at a young age which made his Saiyan heritage react strongly. Remember the original Japanese episode of DBZ 1 showed Gohan about to fall off a waterfall and die. Then he got kidnapped by Raditz, saw his dad get brutalized and his rage manifested.
Then Piccolo's training and his experiences with Vegeta and on Namek really boosted his Zenkai and inner potential. Trunks and Goten had nowhere near the kind of combat exposure.

What was interesting about Gohan after his training with the Supreme Kai was that he didn't use a ki attack against Super Buu. Everybody did but Gohan was on pure strength.
Anyhow if Gohan had defeated Super Buu by somehow purging out Fat Buu and getting drained enough to barely fight against Kid Buu, that would've been far more acceptable. And then Goku can kill Kid Buu with the Earth Genki Dama as he originally did.
