Think about it this way, cotton is objectively a terrible father and fucked up hank to the point he has many life long issues.

Hank turned out to be a great father who created a great kid with not many real issues at all. The fact all of the issues Bobby ends up having are either resolved within one episode or are not real issues and just pet peeves Hank dislikes show this

Funnily enough Hank trying so hard to adhere to his dad’s expectations is a large part of why Hank is fucked up and also why his dad dislikes him. Part of it is that men of that generation, whether from war trauma or just the culture, didn’t show love to their kids as part of how they were raised. Then when they are grandparents they allow themselves to show love.

Like Hank is probably thrilled that Cotton likes Bobby or just sees it as a nice weird thing that happened and doesn't think about it on a deeper level. But Cotton probably did it as a way to hurt Hank. He wanted Hank to feel inferior to his own child. But Hank never felt that way. It's like the abuse flew over Hank's head, and cotton probably didn't care enough if it actually got to Hank. He just tried the best he could. Even with "Good Hank," it didn't bother Hank that much that his own father didn't seem to like him that much and elevated all the children in the family. He just didn't like that direct implication that he was bad. Cotton tried so hard to hurt Hank at every turn, and most of it flew over Hank's head.
