I've heard from friends in the industry that failed writers or producers will use someone elses script or book, something popular or with an established fanbase, to get their own ideas into television and film.
Or that the creators of the shows tend to think their farts don't smell and that their writing or ideas are better and edit these shows because something is "stupid" or whatever.
A more recent show I can remember that was a lot like the books was the Terminal List. They did make changes, but it was mostly toning things down for ratings. Oh, and they changed the hot reporter into a frumpy asian girl, probably for diversity check list standards.
