>>211539697The film is told through 5 different characters perspectives, and finally the 6th perspective told through the lense of the one kid who did not disappear from the class. Eventually the perspective of each character ends on a cliffhanger, and then perspective switches to another character. Each time more of what is actually happening is being revealed.
It's the final perspective that finally fully reveals what happened. It is revealed that Alex's great aunt Gladys is extremely old, decrepit and essentially expected to die soon. There is a very brief snippet of Gladys in the trailer, covered in almost clownish makeup. Gladys is a witch of sorts, and takes advantage of Alex's parents by taking samplings of their hair. Her magic is like voodoo, using hair samples, tree branches and her own blood to manipulate people into being her automatons. Also she appears able to suck the life force out of her victims and slowly become younger and more healed over time, while her victims become almost braindead and paralyzed unless she orders them to do something. Alex's parents are braindead almost the entire time and he has to feed them soup by hand into their mouths. They can barely even swallow it, but they'll die if not fed in this vegetative state. She manipulates almost every character in the film save for Alex, who she needs to maintain a semblance of normalcy in the house. She was able to make the kids run out of the house by using the Valentine's cards Alex got in another voodoo ritual. The kids hide in the basement, lifeless and immobile while Gladys drains their life force. She can force people to go into an animalistic murderous rage, where they absolutely will not stop, exhibit any sign of pain or exhaustion until they've either killed their victims, or been killed.
