It's been closer to 30 years honestly, colorism was on its way out the door when I was a kid, the reason that's the case is that it got talked about often and shut down every time anyone insulted or even complimented someone insinuating that they look better because they have light skin, hair, or eyes. It's legitimately one of the better achievements of black American culture.

I'm not saying 100% of people don't make stupid jokes or comments about skin color but it's much much less of an issue than what it used to be, it's super rare now. And has almost flipped when it comes to beauty standards for black Americans.
