The gay robot explores the implications of this more than the MC does; he was created to love the fat homo but at some point reached enough self-awareness that he could choose not to, and willfully chose to anyway. He assembled all the data, "I'm not human, I'm actually a robot, I was programmed to love this dude, my initial memories of meeting him were fake, every memory after of my life with him were real... I accept it. It's okay." Bonus points because he's later forcibly programmed into murder mode and he actually manages to override that eventually because his love for fat boy was that "real"
In Iris's case she struggles a lot reconciling her own implanted memories and feelings that Josh is The Man She Loves but eventually overcomes them because he won't stop fucking trying to kill her.
So a Companion robot technically doesn't give you Free Love, it just gives you Tutorial Mode Easy Love. It's inclined to truly love you, but not guaranteed to, and you have to fuck up REALLY hard to make that head start in your favor go away.
Honestly it's fairer than a lot of concepts.
