Dick Tracy Discussion
We do all agree this is one of the best comic-adaptations of all time, right?

(if you haven't seen it already, I recommend going in to it blind)

nice little unique-looking movie but there's a reason why it has mostly faded from memory.

It's pretty good and has a great look

Bstman Forever, TMNT 1990, Superman II and Barbarella are my favourites though

I don't know, it's a bit vanilla in its story, a bit too stereotyphical, not much to discuss on the surface perhaps, then again I feel it has some depth. I mean, look at the other movies /tv/ has discussed to depth, they don't have much going for them either.

No one remembered Dick Tracy when the movie came out and looks like independent film making compared to what became relevant back then

Madonna was great to perfect in it, noir damsel going from femme fatale to unfair victim

Warren is boring af but without him the movie won't even exist

Pacino needs two oscars for this one for him one for the hump

Acting
>Did Al Pac deserve an oscar
no
>Should someone else played Dick other than Warren Beatty
doesn't matter, he was fine
>Was Madonna good or did she ruin the movie for you
she was fine

visuals
>Did you like the comic style
yes, in part, but not the generic room backdrops, felt very hollow
>What shots was most impressive
large city vistas
>too much use of split-focus and matte paintings?
maybe

plot/characters
>who were your fav character
none
>was the plot too simple
no
>was it a good choice to incorporate a child character into the story
didn't matter, but i doubt much kids watching the movie projected themselves into this character if that was the intention

meta
>why has this movie been forgotten
unremarkable plot
>where do you place Dick Tracy in history
the past
>will AI be able to copy this style or is it dead forever
art needs to be shaped and crafted by humans. the style could be copied by a variety of methods, there is just no demand for it.

What surprised me was the acting. Pacino was superb but almost everyone was in tune with their odd appearance: Hoffman, Paul Sorvino, William Forsythe, Henry Silva, James Caan.. They were all great.

Problem with the movie and why it under performed is because it had no real audience. Back then, adults didn’t go to comic book movies like they do now. Primary demographic was kids. Coming off the Summer of The Bat the previous year, kids didn’t give a shit about some 30s comic strip detective they never heard of. Add on it was full of cameos of actors most kids back then would have no idea who the fuck they were. Pacing was slow with musical numbers. I didn’t like it at all when I saw it. As an adult I liked it more but it’s still flawed pacing wise

The look was fine, but coming out after sweltering summer of batman 89 it was a let down. just like >>211579375

Burton raised the bar for visuals and Tracy looked cheap and shoddy, partically the makeup on flat top. I remember expecting Madonna and the kid to sink the movie but they didn't.

Fun fact, this is the last major Hollywood film ever released that has not a single digital shot in the entire film.

Beatty is a massive faggot who won’t give up movie rights. Be real interesting seeing a less cartoonish version of Dick Tracy. He’s got the most extensive rogue gallery which Batman copied. Rights go into public in 2027 so maybe it’ll happen

>30s comic strip detective they never heard of.
This so much. +1 +1. Back in the 70s everyone had heard of Superman. Back in the 80s everyone had heard of Batman. That's why they were box office hits.

Back in the 90s none had heard of Dick Tracy. And every actor looked completely unlike themselves so if you watched the movie expecting to see Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman you'd see nothing. Hello, Beatty, dumbass, people pay money to see the actors faces, not their acting, you fucking dumbass!!!

people r just stupid, they can't recognize kino, I mean, in 2008 everyone agreed TDK was a much better movie than Batman Begins, but as time goes people will forget Ledger existed and they'll look at the halfass effects and stunts in the movie and generations alpha and beta will slaughter it and laugh at their grandpas, straight into their faces, telling them Nolans Batman-trilogy is just a meme-factory and it sucks otherwise

Yeah we did actually, there was a lot of marketing and hype for this movie when it came out

I agree. If it had come out before Batman it would've been remembered as a 1-2 punch

Warren Beatty was great, his lowkey stoneface and stoically investigative look was a much needed contrast to the mobs ridiculous gestures and made-up faces, precisely as it is in the comic. The villains all look ugly, the looks badass, clean clothes, shaved chin, tough and hard.

>Primary demographic was kids.
Yes and no.

For a "kids" movie, Disney made a heavy push with advertising it in Pleasure Island, the "adults only" section of Walt Disney World. I remember walking around Pleasure Island during the day and seeing all the Dick Tracy stuff everywhere, with them cashing in on Dick Tracy and Breathless Mahoney and the darker, sexier themes in the movie.
