It's an Oedipal story about a man who killed his father and is tortured by guilt. This guilt leaves him impotent, and his mother's constant psychological castration only makes things worse. When his brother dies, he sees an opportunity to regain his manhood by avenging his family and “satisfying” his mother. However, his guilt and moral conscience stand in the way.
He learns that his brother was killed by a cop who is treated like a divinity—an unforgiving figure who seems to possess supernatural powers. The man decides to challenge him. He loses. He attempts to kill the cop and also prevents a man, sent by his mother, from murdering the cop's daughter.
In the end, the main character submits to the cop's judgment. But the ambiguous conclusion (with the cop singing a happy love song) suggests that the cop might have forgiven him.
