I believe his ending would have been better even if it was the same overall ideas (I haven't even read the books but it really seemed to decline in quality significantly over time, as there was less material to use and as the show runners got more and more involved with the storylines).
BUT if you're an author, it's just a terrible idea to release your idea before you're done with them. The hype is dead, not only for the audience but for himself as well. No matter what he does with it, it will still be as another take on the ending. And, since a majority of the audience were tv show watchers and not necessarily readers of the books, the tv show ending will be the only thing they'll remember

With the huge amount of information given in them it's obvious taking a break from the main ASOIAF series to write some of the Dunk and Egg stories, Fire and Blood, and Dance were all necessary for plot points he wants to include in Winds and ADoS to not feel completely out of nowhere, but even still it genuinely should not be taking this long to return to it now, there's no excuse.
