He was tossed into a prison where the absolute worst resided (rapists and all sorts of lunatics, with no good people kek) because he failed his mission to kill fucking Hiruzen which as basically a God of the 5 natures, still he fucking survived this encounter. Kishi really nailed Akatsuki's member design and backstory. Each one of them is rich in storytelling. I feel you could create an entire offshoot manga from their entire story, just doing a cursory look through their past. Hidan's religions, Kakuzu's village, Nagato's Six Path creation, Deidara's upbringing (I actually think the manga elaborated a bit on this one), Kisame's clan and so on, pretty interesting potential stuff.
