Spielberg was a producer. The chance that he didn't know about that scene and wasn't involved with it in some way is literally fucking 0% unless you just want to say he's Schrodinger's Competent: Either a good director/producer when things go right, and an incompetent dipshit who's not doing his job when things go wrong.
I get that he wasn't at the set, but he was already famous even at the time and had a high level, upper management role.
The idea that he wasn't aware about the illegal shit going on with having those kids on that set is preposterous. There's no proof, but there's also no "proof" of Nancy Pelosi's insider trading, but come on, dude.
It's pretty goddamn clear that he's almost certainly culpable in some way, unless you're just taking his word for it despite the fact that he's obviously biased towards protecting his own ass.
It's pretty fucking clear that he used his fame, influence, money, and media contacts to just put all the blame on a subordinate. You know, like a scumbag. I'm not saying it was primarily his fault, maybe I'd even say he's less than 10% at fault, but he's still a comical weasel for how he handled that situation.
