Why does the sub look so small compared to the rails on the ship?
It can't be perspective because why would it be further away from the lens than the ship if it were looking directly at the bow unless it's looking at something off the port side for some reason?
There's supposed to be people in that sub
Am I retarded?

I mean, he literally took the cheapest metal, surrounded it with the equivalent of 1000 elastic bands and managed to get to the bottom of the ocean and back numerous times.

but that's my point, that was the carbon fiber strands taking the brunt of the force.
Stands to reason that if you're building a cheaper submarine it will have a more limited lifespan.
Literally all he had to do was throw on some more carbon fiber threads, and it would be fine.

Only the most expensive one in your screenshot could reach the Titanic. Even ignoring purchase cost, the problem was weight. You need a huge fucking boat to haul around a big metal sub and that's even more expensive.
He wanted to build a lightweight sub out of carbon fiber so he could have a lighter, cheaper boat haul it around.
There may even be some carbon fiber composite or design using carbon fiber in some places that works. The main problem was that if you don't have the money for a full deep sea operation using existing vehicles, you don't have the money to fund deep sea vehicle R&D, and you definitely don't have the money to see it fail.

Not sure I'm seeing the problem.
Purchase a sub that you know works.
~$6mil or so is not steep for an operation like this and the guy was a trust fundie from a rich family so he could get a loan easily.

Once proven that he can do a dive and come back up he can start charging people whatever he wants commercially and at that point it prints money.

Cheaper and lighter. If it's too heavy you need an expensive boat to haul it.
Dude was an aerospace engineer, and they use carbon fiber in hulls all the time. He thought he was a genius bringing something to the field that no one had thought of before.
He invested all his money and ego in this and could not accept that it failed.

The best documentary stuff was Josh Gates from Discovery going on a test dive with Rush and watching Josh's alarm grow as things fail one after the other while Rush blithely dismisses his every concern. I've seen Josh do a lot of wild things, but that submarine fucking scared him.

Imagine being there seconds before the compression kicks in and you know that all your atoms and molecules are going to be mingled together into one paste that is then going to be spread out in a burst and turned into food for sea life.
Essentially within moments all of them just turned into homogenous human mulch substance and you couldn't tell where one person starts and another begins. Total mulchification.

the hull is seasoned, honestly the logic is pretty sound, they were probably just unlucky
after most of the weak carbon threads have broken, only the strongest would remain.

it's the same way that F1 cars wear out their tires during a race. No one expected the tires to last for a lifetime, so you have replacements
All he needed was to secure another round of investing, and he'd probably have bought a giant spool of carbon fiber thread, so he could just keep replacing it.

He should've had a system where the inside of the sub fills up instantly with a quick hardening foam, which buys them more time to get saved in case of a hull breach. Basically everyone just puts on an oxygen mask, they activate the foam and it fills up every available space in the sub and hardens, which prevents the hull from collapsing inwards. Then they can wait, nested in like that, for a few more days maybe to get rescued.

In all honesty I think just lathering the outside of the sub with gorilla glue or caulk or something similar would've saved them on that dive.

If this proposed foam can withstand pressure better than the carbon fiber they used, they would have made the hull out of that instead. But this foam does not exist, and even if it did there was no way to rescue people cocooned on the bottom of the ocean, not to mention they would have had an entire millesecond to don their masks and trigger the foam.
Basically you are dumb.
