Bogieville - Vampire slop with dodgy accents but decent FX for the budget. 2/5
The Night Eats The World - Quiet zombies versus and insufferable protagonist. 1.5/5
A Breed Apart - Shitty CGI dogs. Bad remake of The Breed: already a bad movie. Avoid. 1/5
The Surfer - Nic Cage giving a lifetime performance, and impeccable soundtrack. 4/5
Rammbock - What I would do in a zombie outbreak. 4/5

Anons said the plot didnโt make sense but I think they didnโt realise that itโs an exploration of grief and possessiveness, not necessarily โevil incarnateโ โ the antagonist is a confused and flawed and vulnerable person driven to madness by grief and guilt. But thatโs what ultimately saves her from committing the same act she blames herself for.
>>211683325how pozzed is it?
>>211683362Not really, it even explores how manipulative women will abuse images of frailty and masculinity to get what they want. The main antagonist tries to falsely accuse a teenage boy of hitting women and being a testosterone ridden โmanโ despite hitting the said child herself. Itโs fairly anti-feminist in the #MeToo sense. The blind main actress is a natural talent and her being Asian isnโt all that important; sheโs just naturally good at acting and she was found through a talent call that her mom saw online.

I sighed as soon as it turned into an escort mission. But the whole plot makes no fucking sense at all and is basically capeshit. Alex Garland is a retard.

>>211689527>>211692618>>211693379The child acting is surprisingly excellent. Like they actually mog the adults. It starts a bit slow (beyond a wtf opening sequence), and takes probably about 30-40 to get going. It always sort of flirts with the concept and presents itself as a slasher, but it isn't one. It's a camp where they build and reprogram clones of dead children so they can eventually send them back to their grieving parents. But there are issues with the programming that they can't control it seems. The twist is pretty awkward because it becomes very apparent that the adults are all "in on it" together about halfway through the movie, but then they have to do this huge information exposition dump at the end to get the viewer up to speed on what everyone's motivations are and what the actual storyline is.... the ending is rather retarded with the kids turning evil
There's also this weird aesthetic where it is graded and shot and designed like it's an 80s film but they are using tablets and smartphones etc...

>>211716000>it adapted right down to the fucking word or is every scene drawn out to ridiculous lengths? The latter.
Lรกszlรณ Krasznahorkai's writing style is one big stream-of-consciousness also, it's impossible to translate 1:1 to the screen.
>>211713307The Ugly Stepsister
how are the exorcist prequels/sequels/spinoffs/etc
>>211716000It's not 1:1 like
>>211716323 says, but they did collaborate to make it as 1:1 as it could be. It's not drawn out to ridiculous lengths though. For example it's not anywhere near being real time, but it is meant to give you a sense of waiting anxiously for something that probably isn't coming in the next twenty minutes, even though it was due ten days ago and could come any time. You need long enough before the punchline hits for it to work
>>211716000Femina Ridens in particular I remember thinking, I need to see the context of that statue. Idk if it was pic related exactly, but it was the vagina dentata sculpture (without the skellington).
>>211717881I watched The Eerie Midnight Horror Show (aka The Sexorcist) the other night, it's not good but worth it because a life size jesus comes off the crucifix to replace the solo crucifix scene in the original kek
>>211717728Looks like garbage
>>211717881The Exorcist III is one of the best horror movies ever made on some levels (cinematography, directing, acting). That's not to say it's one of my favorite horror movies, but you should really watch it if you haven't.
>>211713307Damn, good AND not garbage? I can't think of one that fits both criteria
>>211717881Exorcist II is a B-movie, from what I understand. There's a really funny clip of William Friedkin talking about it. I've heard good things about the third film though.
Anyway, I'm back to /film/. Enjoyed the momentary /hor/ sojourn.
>>211718236George C. Scott is always good but Brad Dourif is incredible
>>211718325>Brad Dourif is incredibleYeah, I think Exorcist 3 is one of his best. It came out right after Child's Play, and there is that child play reference in there which is cheesy, but I won't hold it against it. I mean, we also get angel Fabio.
>>211718312I found it bad, confusing, but I understand that cosmic power is mostly miss than hit.
>>211716000You told me you're not into slow cinema, you're not gonna be into Tarr.
>>211718325>>211718510He always is, seriously, in every performance no matter how small the part he completely takes over his screen time, amazing actor. It's not /hor/ but i strongly recommend Wise Blood (1979), a very underrated John Huston film with the rare Brad Douriff starring role.

>>211714141I don't really care for their excuse, it's clearly the same female ghostbusters squad idea.
>>211673994They say they like the twist at the end.
>>211718325Not in Exorcist III he (Scott) wasn't. Scott was HORRIBLY miscast in the role, spending half his time randomly screaming for no reason and the other half being a prop watching other actors do crime scene work. Scott's performance is the worst thing about the film. I don't dispute Dourif being Dourif, of course.
It wasn't really Scott's fault, don't misunderstand. He just wasn't the guy for the role, and a discerning eye can tell. The character has none of the quiet subtlety of Lee J. Cobb's portrayal, which centered on Friedkin's own personal favorite scene in his own original film: when the detective is sweetly and quietly turning the screwss on the poor mother. Scott is best employed as a brash and overtly masculine type with notes of humor (Dr. Strangelove, Patton), but these qualities are exactly why he was miscast in the third exorcist film.
All these considerations give rise to legit questions about the casting process for the third film, especially since the original author directed it. Apparently, Scott "signed up", maybe inviting himself into the production. It was produced on a shoestring (11M, even in early 1990s money) it seems.
>>211716323>>211718142Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. I will try watching it one day soon enough.
>Femina RidensJust added to my watchlist.
>>211719121You're right. I watched Hagazussa recently and really liked it but that's not slow cinema, just slow burn. I was mostly curious since I read about Satantango's production a week or two back.
>>211718312This one's pretty good. They don't deliver much on cosmic horror so don't get misled by the opening Lovecraft quote. I saw it shortly after Color Out of Space though so I probably just went in with the wrong expectations.
>>211709153annihilation was for all purposes a western remake of stalker
>>211720630Explains why it was bad.
I didn't like the Solaris remake either, but I hate Clooney.
>>211719785It's the most generic "twist" possible.
The only thing I can think is, maybe if you saw it in theaters in actual 3D, that may have been a unique and interesting experience. The movie itself, watched in 2D at home, is total dog shit. Ugly visuals, bad plot, cringe script. Dumber than the dumbest "dumb teen horror movie."

>>211722694haven't seen it, but Tiny Tim is pretty creepy
Holy MOLY kino. I think the first one is more atmospheric, but this has a better story, characters, and some great animation
>>211724792I have a soft spot for the first one over Bloodlust, I like the "I'll even let you have your way with me!!" setup. But they're both great.
It's most impressive that the Japs created one of the best interpretations of a european gothic story.
>>211725026>>211724792I went and saw the first VHD at a kinoplex a couple months ago. First time I went to a movie in years. First time I went to a cinema alone. It was pretty good but 50 fucking dollars for some popcorn, candy, soda and a ticket is a bit much.
I had heard about how baffling the ending of 28 Years Later was but I wasn't prepared for a cult of acrobatic fighters that all dress like Jimmy Saville.
>>211725026>I have a soft spot for the first one over Bloodlust, I like the "I'll even let you have your way with me!!" setup. But they're both great.I'll probably end up rewatching the first one more over time. It's got an older, simpler style to it, which is the kind of movie I like to put on at night when I'm falling asleep
>>211725140>50 fucking dollars for some popcorn, candy, soda and a ticket is a bit much. They really fuck you with the lobby snacks. When I go to the movies, I just sneak in some whiskey
>>211720241Have you seen any Monteiro? He's the slow cinema for people who don't like slow cinema, his films are filled with humour and dialogue. Watch the God trilogy, i think you would love that character.
>>211725140> 50 fucking dollars for some popcorn, candy, soda and a ticket is a bit much.Yeah it's wild. I feel like a lot of people don't know the prices and they get them because they're like fuck I'm too embarassed to say I don't want it now.
On the way out of the cinema last night I saw a "large popcorn" that had like 90% of it left as well kek because they're so fucking big.
>>211725219By the end it was like, ok fuck why not the film is already stupid as fuck.
There was one shot where a guy does a ninja capeshit flip that was too far even for that though.

The Night Flier was primo comfy tv style horror, thanks to the anon who rec'd it.
They also rec'd Campfire Tales (1997) so going to watch that sometime as well.
Anyone here seen history of the occult?
It seems like Late Night with the Devil just copied it but I haven't seen it yet
Canadian actresses Sarah Gadon and Amanda Fix.
