I watched it because I miss old fantasy shows that used to play on shit like the Sy-Fy channel and this show scratched a certain itch. The difference is, those old shows had shit budgets but camp, charm and soul. Wheel of Time was made by the same people ruining fantasy by changing the focus of the show and it was tiring. Like George RR Martin said about producers wanting to make a story "their own". So yeah it was building to big moments from the books but judging how they had already changed some of those big moments it was turning into a slog. It had a huge budget but no camp, charm or soul.

This isn't a setting where you can ignore ethnicity. The ethnicity of various characters is actually something of an important plot point. You fuck it up when you make everyone every ethnicity. The people of the Two Rivers are all one ethnicity except for Rand and that's a plot point. The irony is that the people of the Two Rivers are supposed to have a fairly dark, kind of Mediterranean complexion, so they wouldn't have even been northern European white. They just aren't a perfect rainbow of every fucking ethnicity on earth. What really takes the cake is that they didn't even need to do this shit. The Wheel of Time would have had a pretty diverse cast if they had remained faithful to the novels because the main characters travel everywhere.

In the book, she's supposed to not look a single day out of her early 20s. What's more, she is supposed to be the world's most beautiful woman by no small margin. She is described as being the very platonic ideal of female beauty, like every other woman is warped and imperfect imitation of her, and men are described as seeing other beautiful women and misshapen and clumsy immediately after meeting her.

Which might be difficult to replicate when you're dealing with real human beings, but, you know, they could have gone with someone younger and more conventionally attractive to at least try to sell it.

I have worked at many different companies where some executive gets it in their head that they are going to completely change the system of the business. All the talk of efficiency and cost saving goes out the window because they spend all this money radically changing things only to find it doesn't work because they don't understand human psychology, don't understand the business they own and never bothered to ask the people they expect to implement the change what they thought (and they would have quickly explained it was shit).

Like, I've seen something of discourse around a series of Christian propaganda films like God's Not Dead which, despite whatever other flaws they might have, actually function as propaganda. The Christians are all young, attractive and happy, the atheists are old and miserable. The movie makes its case for why God exists and Christianity is right and atheism is wrong and the Christians win in the end while the crotchety old atheist professor meets a sorry fate.

If Christian propaganda was written like a lot of this modern propaganda, it would be written as a standard movie, but all the characters are kind of "visibly Christian," everything in the movie is meticulously tailored to fit Christian morality and beliefs (but no one ever brings attention to this in any kind of obvious way and its easy to completely miss if you're not already clued in) and every now and then a character start quoting the Bible out of nowhere in the middle of a conversation. Like someone says "You can't do that, it's too dangerous!" and the other character looks directly into the camera and says "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. I'm fairly convinced that a prestige tv format was not the way to adapt Wot anyways. If the show had taken inspiration from the 90s (Xena/Hercules) and gone with lower budget 20ish episode format, it could have worked. WoT can be a slow burn sometimes, and 8 episodes makes the thing feel stifled and rushed at the sdame time.

The entire first season was middling at best,

Even if you don’t hate it for how many changes they made from the books (odd to expect an inbuilt audience from book fans while making it so different from the books), most people are not going to keep watching into season 2 after not enjoying season 1. Let alone trying to attract new viewers each subsequent season

I have never understood decide to make a TV or film adaptation of something, and then not be faithful to the source material. I've seen some people claim that the audience already knows the old story and wants a new story, but I can't think of even a single example of this being true. It feels more like when they acquire a license to some established IP that they've bought that IP's fanbase and have them automatically, so there's no need to appease them because they'll eat anything you shit out because of brand loyalty, and instead you need to focus on making changes that cater to some supposed "wider audience." And, of course, all these changes just make everything worse and appeal to no one.

Anyone else here absolutely devastated and crushed about the cancellation of the Wheel of Time Amazon series?

It appears they didn't listen to the fans, going so far as ignoring the pleas of the pre-eminent WoT lore expert, Sarah Nakamura (who helped make sure the series stayed true to what Robert Jordan envisioned).

I had looked forward to this since I heard about it, and I actually subscribed to Amazon Prime just to enjoy this series when it dropped! I first read the WoT books starting in high school in the mid 90's, through the first 7 books, and used to be involved in usenet discussions. I came back to the series 5 years ago where I reread them and the read the final 7. As a longtime reader, I have also listened to the entire audio book series once this year, and I just finished "Crown of Swords" now on the second listen through the series.

As a certified notary, I'm legally required to be a "Nice guy" and not say mean or nasty things to people, so I won't criticize you if you did not like this series. However, I didn't care one iota about the race of the Emond's Field 5 or any other characters, or if they wanted to hide the identity of the Dragon Reborn, as long as the acting was good and the story plot didn't stray too far from the climax of each of the books - which they did a wonderful job of.

Friday, I am going to prepare some Sackcloth, and retrieve Ashes from the fireplace, and outfit myself and my wife with such. We will wail and mourn the Cancellation until the dawn breaks, at which time we will cook a nice breakfast and settle in to a life where this Grand Series no longer exists.

We've already had people who picked up the books after watching the show, and being very confused right from the outset about how utterly different everything is.
