Pic related is from Sweethurt, the closest thing we have to a teen comedy. I saw it at a festival in 2021, they got US distribution in 2023. It's only JUST coming out in Australia now on the bare minimum platforms.

The only Australian movie I've seen is Wake In Fright. I'm currently in Australia,from Germany originally, travelling there for a month. I saw an Australian guy in a Japanese restaurant today, he ordered two 1 litre jugs of beer for himself. He drank them both before his food arrived. This is the answer, the gov funding body wants two things out of funded entertainment either something that makes the outback look awesome or an unironic DEI/virtue signal checklist shit as much as I loathe the term. Idk why they want to make the outback look cool, I guess tourism but it's clearly not fucking working because no one wants to fucking go there unless it's to Alice Springs AND EVEN THEN not many. As for the checklist shit I got no fucking idea what's going on there, it's uncanny how it's the shit that americans complain about happening right here but no one cares because no one fucking watches the shit.

Then there's the issue of distribution etc and the brain drain as anyone one good will fuck off somewhere they can get paid better or actually have more of a chance to make something cool or at the very least a chance for people to actually fucking watch it.

The average person in any country isn't reading philosophy and spending their weekends doing civilian science.
In terms of university attainment, R&D, academic rankings and whatnot, our country doesn't just do fine but punches well above its weight.
We have our famous novelists, we have at least one pretty famous philosopher, we have our Nobel prize winners.
In the cities there are book clubs, public talks at universities, theaters, art galleries with paintings by some of the European masters.
