There's a lot of disagreement over whether or not the first two seasons are good. You should keep in mind Roddenberry had long since fried his brain and they were using rejected ideas from the original series for some episodes. I wound up enjoying them despite these things, and loved what came later in seasons 3 and beyond.

i have a similar problem conceptually with sonic showers

that CANNOT be fucking comfortable and i don't even understand how it cleans you. it's just battering you with energy and vibrating all the shit off you? what about gunk that won't just dust off? troi has a huge bath in her quarters so clearly using water isn't some sort of social faux pas or an "antiquated measure of the past" so... why? out of all the creature comforts the star trek universe provides i'd still be that one weird guy taking normal ass showers i guess. just couldn't feel clean by spreading my ass cheeks against a subwoofer even if it was some magical sci-fi subwoofer

Literal retard captain.
They found a planet full of displaced humans which they could have joined, and decided not to for the incredibly long shot that any of them would make it back to earth before dying of old age. Starting a new mini federation using that as a base and expand with the help of friendly local aliens in the quadrant where possible would have been the objectively correct choice. Building a few new starships would take maybe a decade or two assuming they could find aliens to help, then send one of them off on a long mission to recontact earth.

Absurd logic anon. The actual results are completely different. You can't use an oven and a microwave for the same things at all.

thats my entire point both will cook food however one will just be cooked the other will be nice and crispy, a sonic shower will clean you, a proper bath or actual shower will also relax your muscles open your pores, etc, the end result is still you are clean, one is simply much nicer then the other but more time and effort

I really don't think they're that similar, though.

The war in Babylon 5 is an apocalyptic event that has been foretold in the myths and legends of multiple alien species. It's a struggle of light vs. darkness, of good vs. evil like I said, and it's all very stratified and black/white in a way that Tolkien is. Sure, there are shades of grey characters who are operating against that backdrop, like in large part the human government, trying to take advantage of it, but the base war itself is presented in a way that a war could/should never be presented in Star Trek: as an almost religious, borderline mystical conflict between races so advances they might as well be using magic.

You've also got things like The Rangers, etc.
I thought JMS took a lot of inspiration from Tolkien, desu.

>no one grows
Kirk doesn't grow in TOS, really. There's typically little of that sort of character progression in shows without mass serialization, episodic shows are all about the self-contained story rather than the broader continuity.
Does Riker really grow as a character in TNG? Maybe a tiny bit in that he just... gets older? But that sort of growth exists in all Voyager characters as well, even Chakotay who might as well not even exist.

When I watch an episode like Living Witness, I'm not thinking "Boy howdy, I can't believe Harry Kim never got promoted!" -- I'm enjoying the story of the episode for what it is, trying to absorb the intention of the writers and the story they're conveying.

thats exactly my point, their is nothing over arcing just the same thing with no carry over from what happened before, tng actually does do this the most obvious example is picard after the inner light of course, but their is also data and worf, deanna and rikers relationship, crusher and picards, barclay, o'brien, etc for some reason voyager has even less character progression then tng they go through massive life changing events and then next week its like nothing happened. For instance after best of both worlds, the attitude of the crew most especially picard but really of them towards the borg takes a hugh (pun intended) shift that remains for the rest of the show.

TOS is special because of the time it was made and the restrictions placed on it, it had to be viewed in any order it was the nature of tv at the time. Introducing something that would carry over to the rest of the episodes was a big no no for syndication which was the life blood of tv even more so then in the 80s and 90s, and of course even then it led to cancellation. I grew up watching re-runs of TOS every week at 11pm on tuesday, only night I was allowed to stay up that late. TOS is no1 for me. But I understand the restrictions they were under at the time having said that when they did have some continuity like say after balance of terror, over a ear later I watched the enterprise incident and it was a massive thrill. Maybe stuff lke that is what encouraged the tng and ds9 writers to make things more of a continuation then just standalone jump in anywhere type tv.

They're action flicks and Kirk is a moon-eyed Iowa farmboy who just wants to rock climb and ride horses and other things that his actor William Shatner also coincidentally enjoys.
In TOS, he's from the colonies and he's extremely well-educated, cultured, and worldly. His mind is razor sharp and he's basically the perfect captain.

A lot of the "Kirk is a cowboy" tropes come from the TOS movies.

I did but only as a once off
altho I was fairly drunk each episode and don't remember much. I do remember Kor and rooting for him but overall I just remember the show as a product of its time which while not bad for the era kinda felt like 0 characters had personalities beyond stereotypes in military/anti-war shows

The reason she sounds like a pompous narcissist is because she's doing a Katherine Hepburn impression and that is basically the role Hepburn played in a lot of films.

I guess she chose Hepburn as the mold for Janeway because Hepburn was a go-getter and a female alpha, definitely somebody who "wears the pants" but really what is coming across as arrogant to you is just her trying to do the 'transatlantic accent' thing from old movies.

I don't disagree but it was just that Sisko always rubbed me the wrong way. Like he's basically trying to say 'I'm right but everyone including me knows I'm wrong"
I suppose I disliked the whole 'I'm still traumatized and never got better' thing they randomly bring up and drop from the start with Jennifer/Jake

It's not just that. It was the 90s. We had shit like xena, Buffy, etc and more and more female roles were straying away from the whole 'if she's a badass woman she's still just a one dimensional woman who has no other traits'
Granted, Janeway always made me think she was meant to be a criticism of a workaholic capitalist who was a coffee/cocaine addict (epending on your view) and that was the driving action for like 99% of her actions was to get more coffee
